Is Hampton a good place to live with kids?

Following on from yesterdays Isleworth thread!
ive looked at the schools online, and whilst there are some brill primaries, the secondary school there seems pants, and it says there a lot of students from Hounslow (rough?)and bad league tables.
There is a good girls school further away but dont know if its too far from the houses i would be looking at?

Anyone know anything about Hampton? the houses i can afford back on to the race course, does anyone know if this is a local authority estate?

oh I thought that was quite positive! have you been to see it? it's alright...nice families on that street.

allgonebellyup · 04/07/2008 21:29

but i am scared off by all the estates/vandalism around it! mind you there is a little bit of that where i live and its meant to be a posh town here!

How long is the walk into town? also do you know if any families have got their kids into any good schools? thats my main concern.

Thanks for all the help by the way!!!

um Fymandbean
You do know that the Royal Grammar school Guildford is private don't you ?
I would hate you to move and then find out.

allgonebellyup · 04/07/2008 21:39

Uber - Archdale Place also looks nice, also just down Cambridge rd, not far from Hampden Rd.
Any good??

pagwatch - DS is only 2.5 and DC2 is, well, the bean in FYMandbean thanks for that though - we are planning to do a lot more research nearer the time

Slight hijack - but Thumbwitch, did you go to Rectory? Cos I used to teach there . When JG was headteacher. And I thought it was a great school then by the way. It was my first job and I was very happy there.

It went gradually downhill after I left though...

thumbwitch · 04/07/2008 23:01

Aha sphil - John GArnett was a good head - I was not at Rectory, I went to LEH but my best mate and my bro and sis all went to Rectory. JG turned up while my bm was there and he improved it but it started to go down before he left and was pretty bad when my bro and sis left.

I do remember though that were quite a few fights between the kids from the comp and the posh schools - the boys more than the girls but there was one memorable day when a posse of LEH 5th years were heading out to meet a posse of Rectory 5th year girls - luckily teachers intervened and it was stopped. Were you there for that?

how about this?

Near Hampton. Excellent primaries. Secondary not so good - still pondering that one myself. This neighbourhood is a fairly well-kept secret

allgonebellyup · 05/07/2008 11:06

oooh that house is lush!!
just worried about secondary school, and its a little bit closer to Staines/further from Richmond than i was anticipating!!!
They have posh St Davids school in Ashford dont they? (private )

ChippyMinton · 05/07/2008 11:19

Very easy to get to Richmond from here, it's on the same train line, or drive straight down the A316. Very little aircraft noise compared to the 'posher' areas. Staines is actually pretty alright for shopping (it has a Waitrose, Pizza Express and Mamas & Papas ) Plenty of other nice places to go nearby - Windsor, Walton on THames (which has Boden shop!), Kingston.

Secondary schools - the main choices are Bishop Wand CE and St Pauls Catholic, both in Sunbury.

Ask me anything! One or two MNetter here too.

cece · 05/07/2008 11:27

Hampton is lovely. Really family friendly. We used to live near the train station.

cece · 05/07/2008 11:28

Ashford a bit too near to Feltham for my liking. Isleworth OK (just looked at your other thread) we used to live there too. But a bit too near to Hounslow!

allgonebellyup · 05/07/2008 11:31

thanks you two

im still liking Hampton and also Kingston

2 bed flat in a nice road in Hampton

ChippyMinton · 05/07/2008 11:34

Everwhere in London is near somewhere dodgy cece. Hampton is just as close to Feltham and Hanworth.
I went through the same process of househunting about 3 years ago - started at Twickenham and worked my way outwards. 'Tis pleasant here and good value for money.

cece · 05/07/2008 11:38

Yes it had nice shops - I agree and my friends who live in Ashford like it.

ChippyMinton · 05/07/2008 12:42

Are you coming to have a look around the area allgonebellyup?

allgonebellyup · 05/07/2008 13:52

yep, meeting with my friend who lives on Richmond hill (v posh and out of my league !)and he will show me the sights of all the surrounding areas, next sunday.

OP posts:
ChippyMinton · 05/07/2008 15:23

at Richmond Hill. Wastch out for aircraft noise, because Wests London is on the flight path. Shout if you want more local info

allgonebellyup · 05/07/2008 18:29

yes i have noticed the planes flying low when i have visited him before!
they should put the house prices down to something i can afford because of it!
