How to do a picture gallery on this wall

I’m useless at this kind of stuff so would appreciate some ideas ! What colour frames would you choose ? I’ve added a picture of the floor which is over 100 years old and original to the house and I absolutely adore.

Edit - ignore the ugly stairs, they’re being redone hence the state of them right now. I plan to paint them white and have a stair runner. Just want some ideas for a picture gallery at the moment.

I remember this hall from.before, I like the green. Personalkybi would avoid a picture gallery and go for 2/3 large pictures instead. And I don't mean mass produced stuff, I mean look at your local auction/charity shops etc. It's a great space, don't over clutter it though.

For example, something like this..

If you really want a gallery wall then the best way I've found, is lay your pictures out on the floor and move them around until you find a layout you like.

I don’t think I’d fully follow No 10. Their walls are yellow, pictures black & white as are frames and mounting. Three colours.

Your lovely green is warmer and as a family gallery will most likely display multiple coloured pictures. Try Pinterest or even ChatGPT for ideas.

Laying out on the floor is a good idea but you need to measure so pictures are placed right. Don’t go too high and be mindful of people hitting off lower pictures.

The large wall facing top of stairs needs a wow or two.

Beautiful hall and stairs.

Stick the photo into chatgpt and ask it to do you an image, it will surprise you.

That green is lush. And I love the little shelf with plants ( though I don't like indoor plants )! The floor is really lovely. Can you find a picture to pick up the colours in the stained glass ?

mojojojoo · 19/08/2026 08:20

So this is what chat gpt came up with, I would have black frames though

Oh thank you, they’re artificial, couldn’t cope with the gnats in real plants lol

Not just the gnats ,you'd have to reach up to water then . I have a faux plant (wandering sailor) on a shelf in the stair corner , the number of times it's been knocked I'm glad there's no soil in it 😄

Lifejigsaw · 19/08/2026 10:10

I really wouldn't do black frames. Wood goes best with green for warmth, but as you have white railings, woodwork and will paint the stairs white, I think you'd be better sticking with that

dontcallmelen · 19/08/2026 14:11

I would have pink, looks so pretty with green looks like you have some pink in the door glass & possibly in the floor can’t quite make out the colours in the photograph.

My passion and extravagance is purchasing original art, I have very eclectic tastes and they are framed in a whole variety of frames; lots different styles/colours. I choose the frame/mount that works for the picture not the colour of wall its going on. A good mount/frame should compliment but not dominate the picture, if I wasn't looking at them I'd struggle to tell you what colour frames/mounts I'd chosen.

Wood and gold, all different sizes. I would start at the bottom making sure they aren’t all placed portrait/landscape and everytime you get a new frame add it further up the wall, mine goes all the way up the steps abode the banister and is about 1m deep. I did mine with all frames from charity shops, olio and asking on marketplace. Probably cost me about £20. I didn’t order photos until I had all the frames so I could measure the frames and have the correct amount of portrait/landscape.

Like @Sheswatchingyou I wouldn't have the frames all the same, but have an eclectic mix of styles, colours etc.

We had a gallery wall (actually two walls as both sides of staircase were enclosed) in our last hallway. The theme was birds - most were vintage prints, frames were gold, black, wood, some old, some new - and the walls were F&B Inchyra Blue. At the top of the staircase we had two large peacock prints flanking a massive Arts & Crafts Movement mirror. I painted the stairs black and used William Morris Strawberry Thief wallpaper on the risers with several coats of varnish over to protect it.

You can also buy cheapish frames/mounts on line giving you a wider choice of colour and style. I only pay professional framers for my more expensive stuff. If you’ve got something that is important to you, is dark or higher value it’s worth paying for museum glass as it reduces reflection.
Apart from original oils always use a mount it will completely transform even a relatively uninspiring picture, a double mount can look even better. I’ve recently gone off coloured mounts preferring cream or off white (never use pure white even on black and white photos).
I move mine around (I’ve probably got over 50!) especially when I get a new purchase somethings just don’t go well together however related or not. I’ve also recently started grouping the same artist together something I previously hadn’t done because I felt it made it look too like an art gallery, I’m pleased with the effect.
The joy of having lots of art is that moving them around is like redecorating it can change the whole feel of a room and means that you look at them in a different way and see things you wouldn’t normally see.
Have fun doing it.

An alternative is mirrors.
I love finding gold mirrors and wall hangings in different shapes but I'm very dull and all my walls are white

Some lovely examples of what you can achieve with some patience & thought I have a gallery wall on the upstairs landing which is mainly charity shop finds if I’m not keen on the frame or it’s really battered I paint or spray them prefer a mixture of painted/wooden/gold these are two I picked up last week for £20.00

dontcallmelen · Yesterday 16:49

Sorry forgot the photo
Jolene I have a pair of large Victorian hand painted mirrors with beautiful gold frames that I picked up on eBay years ago were a total bargain I have one in the hallway & one on the landing really help throw a bit of light around.

Love your pictures.
How fab. I absolutely love seeking out unusual/antique bargains, unfortunately my house is very small and very full!
This is my gallery wall of junk shop finds

Really lovely Jolene I love a few hours mooching & looking for the right piece of art or furniture only issue is having to be patient & not dilly dallying when you do find it otherwise it’s invariably gets snapped up.
