North of London character towns - help please

I'm contemplating moving somewhere North of London, along the A1/M1 corridor, and I've asked Chat GTP for ideas. My prompt was to find locations that combine historic character, greenery, a reasonable chance of finding flats in converted Victorian houses, and practical road links for journeys to both London and Newcastle.
It came back with recommendations for Stamford, Market Harborough, Ampthill, Oakham, Hitchin and Newark (and a few others).
Does anyone have local knowledge from these areas - say around Nottingham, Leicester, Bedford etc to back that up?
I honestly don't know how much to trust ChatGPT and would love some local knowledge!

P.S. An important criteria for the search was to find flats for sale in converted Victorian houses (my dream....) but if you have other suggestions I'd be very interested!

I'm starting to realise that I should look at villages rather than towns, even small ones. I click on "street view" for some of the flats I like, and oh my lord. There are cars and vans parked one after the other on both sides of the road, and I know that would drive me bonkers. I need a place that will not be swarming with cars parked everywhere in sight. I'm getting very old and curmudgeonly.
Can anyone suggest villages I could look at please?

Do you have a car?

Oh wow I love that last one, that's the kind of thing I'm hoping to find... Thank you!

My son rented a flat in Fairfield Hall. It’s a lovely place with a few cottages too.

Does it depend on where you could get a job ? Will you need the income .?
In which case you can’t just look near an independent school and assume you can get a job there.
There are nice properties like this all over the country. You find the job and we’ ll find you the nearby property!

That is a valid point and I've been thinking about it too! My plan is to start by looking for teaching jobs in the wider area. Hopefully something will come up withing commuting distance from one of the villages / small towns I like. I would be happy to drive 30-40 minutes to work.

With teaching, there are only a couple of small windows for job interviews, so the stars would really have to align for me...... but I'm lucky that I 'm not under pressure so I can take my time over the next year or so.

Realistically I would start looking for teaching jobs in December/January and/or just before Easter, ideally starting the new job in September 2027.

I've made a note of Fairfield Hall as one of my top favourites so far! I think I'm in love with the place!

Yes I have a car and don't mind driving, I lived in a village before and commuted to work, shouldn't be an issue for the next 10 years until I retire... Assuming I will work until retirement age...

Ampthill is lovely, but fairly small. What about somewhere like Olney or Newport Pagnell? Close to the M1, several independent schools nearby, and all the amenities of MK.

Letchworth is nice - DD went to school there - and a few private schools in/nearby as well. It’s
