Ensuite too big?

Would you be put off by a house where the en-suite in the master bedroom took up 26% of the entire room?
It still leaves a double room to fit a king sized bed (150cm) with about 70cm walkway (same width as an internal door) around the bed. Thanks

Our en suite is large and didn’t put us off because the bedroom was big too. We’ve actually spilt the en suite in half since we moved in and half is a walk in wardrobe and half is a bathroom. Works well for us.

ComtesseDeSpair · 02/08/2026 18:32

That sounds like plenty of space around the bed, so no, it wouldn’t put me off. I’ve never really prioritised a large bedroom - if it fits a king bed, wardrobe and chests of drawers with enough walking corridor around all, that’s all I need, I’m not living much of my awake life in my bedroom.

Mosaic123 · 02/08/2026 18:35

You can move the wall one day?

If it's big enough you could put a chair in the ensuite for reading!

FuzzyPuffling · 02/08/2026 18:38

Yes, i would. I would much rather have the space in the bedroom.

pastadish · 02/08/2026 18:40

Is there enough storage, wardrobes etc?
Or space for the wardrobes

fiorentina · 02/08/2026 19:06

Where is the storage space? Wardrobes etc as if it didn’t include that I’d say it’s using too much space. What size are the other bedrooms?

Saz12 · 02/08/2026 19:08

If the bedroom was too snall, thst would be the thing that would be a negative. If en suite big enough to be sectioned off to be a dressing room as well, that woukd be nice.

We have 2 v big bedrooms, a comedy-enormous en suite, and a way smaller 3rd bedroom. Old house, silly layout not my choice... if we had the need/money we'd put a small ensuite and a fourth bedroom!

Nchgal · 02/08/2026 19:40

@Mosaic123we are building the en-suite now so unsure if we should make it a bit smaller.

OP posts:
Nchgal · 02/08/2026 19:48

@Saz12the room will be about 3.3m x 3.3m once the en-suite is in, and there will probably be enough room for a free standing 2 door wardrobe as well as the bed and a couple of bedside tables but that’s about it

DandelionClockSeeds · 02/08/2026 19:50

Edit due to x posts.

No, not a big enough bedroom. Shrink the ensuite.

I would prefer a tiny en-suite over a reduced sized bedroom. We have a super king bed, bedside tables, 3 wardrobes, a desk, dressing table and chest of drawers in ours. I would only want a small shower room tbh.

CombatBarbie · 02/08/2026 19:58

Def reduce the en suite size, id be put off a house if the master could only hold 2 x 2 doored wardrobes.

Nchgal · 02/08/2026 20:02

@karmakameleonthe room isn’t enormous hence the en-suite would take up over 25% of the room (maybe about 26-27%)

Redflagsabounded · 02/08/2026 20:06

How big is the en-suite? I've never understood big bathrooms tbh, you don't really need a lot of floor space and it's just more to clean. If it's making the bedroom cramped (only one small wardrobe and bedside tables - and that only 'probably' - no room for a chest of drawers etc) it's probably a bad idea. Can you scale the bathroom down? Shower no bath? Good use of floor space?

Nchgal · 02/08/2026 20:08

The shower tray will be 1.2m and will go across width of the bathroom. The length is about 3.3m.
The issue is the stud wall that will need to be 12cm deep to be strong enough to hold the tiles and this stud wall eats up the bedroom space.

WoollyandSarah · 02/08/2026 20:16

It would be a problem for me - we have a super king bed and I wouldn't be willing to give that up.

Redflagsabounded · 02/08/2026 20:30

What other bathrooms do you already have? Is there an upstairs loo? Could you make this just a shower room?

I've lived in very small bedrooms before and honestly would rather have enough storage than an ensuite. Unless you've only got a downstairs bathroom/loo in which case make this a smaller ensuite loo instead of shower.

FrannyScraps · 02/08/2026 20:33

Then it isn't big enough for an ensuite. Leave as is.

RandomMess · 02/08/2026 20:35

Don’t use tiles but shower board?

FuzzyPuffling · 02/08/2026 20:36

Depending on what other facilities you have, would a "cloakroom" ( WC and basin) be an alternative? Handy for night wees and tooth cleaning.

Came here to say the same.

Same!

WhatAMarvelousTune · 02/08/2026 22:10

Is the 70cm the space around the bed on both sides, and along the bottom of the bed? That feels pretty small once you add a wardrobe in.
Unless there is more space at the bottom of the bed and the 70cm is just the sides?

NotDonna · 02/08/2026 23:33

The bedroom sounds small if it can only fit a two door wardrobe. Storage is crucial.

SusanJJ · 02/08/2026 23:42

It would put me off. I would rather have no en-suite and a proper built in wardrobe.
