Ensuite too big?

Would you be put off by a house where the en-suite in the master bedroom took up 26% of the entire room?
It still leaves a double room to fit a king sized bed (150cm) with about 70cm walkway (same width as an internal door) around the bed. Thanks

How many bathrooms in the house? I hate en suites. I have a really big bedroom which could easily fit one but don't see the attraction. So I'd far prefer the room in the bedroom most likely. We have a 3 bed house with a family bathroom and downstairs toilet. No interest in shrinking my room for an extra.

I'd definitely want decent storage over having an ensuite. We have a shared five-door wardrobe plus a chest of drawers each, then king size bed and side tables. Cramped bedrooms are horrible for getting dressed in.

So there wouldn’t be space for a wardrobe each or chests of drawers? That would definitely put me off. I’m not fussed about having an en-suite but having enough bedroom storage is important.

TulipsMakeMeHappy · 03/08/2026 07:53

Definitely put me off. I will only have a super king bed, and I think you need more storage space. I probably wouldn't have an ensuite in you situation, or borrow some space from another room (which is what we did). I don't understand the 12inch wall though.

My bathroom is 1.7 by 2m and that’s the family bathroom! Tight but plenty if it was an en suite. I’d definitely shrink your bathroom down.

How on earth would a single two door wardrobe be sufficient storage for two people? I don't think that's sufficient storage for one person! I mean I think if you are happy with that much space and don't intend to move that's fine but that will be off-putting for a lot of people.

Do you have a plan as it’s all about proportion

This sort of thing has put me off houses before. No point having a master bedroom with en suite if the bedroom doesn't have enough storage space.

Saz12 · 04/08/2026 10:01

Sorry, but it would put me off.
If essential, I would have the ensuite as small as realistically possible.
Shower at one end, toilet at other, with basin opposite the (pocket?) door on the longer wall. Total length would be something like 2m.

Alternatively, dont bother with an en suite at all.

BeUmberMember · 06/08/2026 16:09

Obviously if you are building your en suite yourselves to your own plans, its your own choice, but you may consider that in the long term , if you perhaps wanted space in the bedroom for a desk if working from home, a smaller ensuite would be better. Or if you chose to sell in future, prospective buyers would very likely prefer a larger bedroom.

Our ensuite is too big and I found it annoying, though not enough to put me off our house as it ticked more important boxes. I just don't see the point in a big bathroom, you can't use it for storage as it's too damp and I would only spend short periods of time in there for showering or using the loo, whereas in a bedroom I might read, study, sew, wfh, exercise, listen to music etc. So I'd want enough space to do those things not just enough space for a bed and getting dressed. We have the equivalent of 4 wardrobes in our bedroom which are all used (not just for clothes but hair, cosmetics, shoes, bags, coats).
