What noise levels should I expect living near the Duke of Wanstead?

I’m interested in a property about 100 yards from the Duke of Wanstead, but I’m a bit concerned about noise levels coming from the pub. I’ve seen that they have live DJ sets every Friday, and monthly live music sets.

Can anybody who lives or has lived close by shed any light on what to expect?

Surely it’s easier to go and be close as kicking out times. Do they have a set licence so it’s the same closing time?

Zanatdy · 07/06/2026 07:05

I’d say it will be noisy, live music, people smoking outside. Especially on Fri/Sat night

ProudPearl · 07/06/2026 07:07

Why do you think people will have heard of some random pub? You haven't even said what part of the country it's in!

Puppylucky · 07/06/2026 07:15

That used to be my local actually @ProudPearl!

To answer the question yes it will be noisy.

ProudPearl · 07/06/2026 07:36

How do you know? Most pubs share their name with many others!

craigdf · 07/06/2026 09:18

@Puppylucky thanks! how close did you live? Were you able to hear any noise from inside your house?

@ProudPearl Wanstead is a place in London, and I believe there’s only one pub with this name in the country (according to Google)

Based on the title I thought you were moving near an actual Duke. Country estate, noise from shooting parties etc. Bit disappointed!

Me too. I was wondering whether he was a dashing Duke, hosting lots of nefarious parties with guests of dubious repute.

Considering it was know as a different Duke I would agree that it was probably very rowdy!
The Duke (formerly known as The Duke of Edinburgh) in Wanstead is a single, standalone neighbourhood pub and dining room

But to keep it on track I found this snippet OP. How big is the area?
The surrounding neighbourhood has roughly 5 to 7 pubs located in and immediately around the High Street.

Because the OP is talking about a specific London suburb - Wanstead.

It will be noisy, not just at kick out but there's often people outside and the pub regularly has events.

We didn't live particularly close but went there a lot. It is /was the trendiest pub in Wanstead (not saying much!) and was very popular. There is a small beer garden to the side which gets rammed. The immediate surrounding area was a bit rough - when the Duke first opened someone threw a brick through the window - but again this is Wanstead so roughness is all relative. The Duke is also very big on community events - so summer Street parties etc. So on balance it probably would get a bit noisy especially in the Summer.

The pubs are very spread out though - Wanstead high street is very long.

Sorry to disappoint. Wanstead house or the demise of it is a sad story. No dashing Duke for starters...

ilovemynails · 07/06/2026 09:38

OP there are other places in the UK than London.

Motnight · 07/06/2026 09:39

The only way you will know for sure if the noise levels are ok for you is to visit the area when the pub has live music on.

Puppylucky · 07/06/2026 09:39

What's that got to do with anything?

I wouldn't be so sure of that, I live near a pub called the Duke of York, I'm hundreds of miles away from York.

And? If you don’t recognise the name then you’re not going to be able to help the OP anyway. It’s not like anyone is going to confuse it for a pub of the same name elsewhere, as there isn’t one.

I think OP is looking for advice from people who know it as they live nearby. A bit like someone might ask about an area of Dublin. If I didn't know said area of Dublin I wouldn't go on the thread and write "I've never heard of that place. Irish people are hilarious"

The pub isn't called The Duke of Wanstead that's a mistype by the OP. It's just called the Duke and it's in Wanstead

A bit more context in the title would have helped people understand the question though. The Duke of Wanstead sounds like a person, especially if you don’t know London. Obviously the opening post makes it clear it’s a pub, but lots of people still won’t have a clue where it is.
It’s always a good idea to make things easy for your readers 😁
