Would indoor guinea pigs affect your view of buying a house?

Would indoor guinea pigs put you off buying a house?

We will be putting our house on the market in a few weeks. We have indoor guinea pigs.

I ask people when they come round if they can smell them and they say not really but I don't know if they are just being polite. I do clean their poo out everyday and deep clean once a week.

We could put them outside for viewings/house photos but it'll mean forking out another £100 for a suitable cage/run that's big enough and foxes cant get to them. We have quite a small garden

What do you think?

I love them, but they DO smell, even if cleaned out daily (which they don't like)x.

@Lunchtimehelp presuming you intend to take them with you, 🤣, I wouldn't want to be in a chain with the kind of lemming that wouldn't buy a house because if guinea pigs, so win/win for ne.

💁🏻‍♀️
🥲shame you don't want to post photos.

Definitely don't put them outside.

Their urine can smell, but they themselves don't.

If they smell, which other poster have said, than yes it would put me off. I know in my head that you are taking them with you, but I'd be concerned the smell would linger and be difficult to get rid of. I'm not a fan of any sort of rodenty thing.

I think the housing market is pretty tough at the moment and that if there is anything that may put buyers off then you should sort it if possible.

Guinea pigs absolutely do not smell. It's one of the reasons we kept them as pets, rather than other animals.

They do smell. I've been in houses that have them. Perhaps you just got used to the smell

'Not really' = 'yes"

No different to cats & dogs,

I love guinea pigs! Unless the viewer is stupid enough to think the guinea pigs are a fixture I don’t see why they should make any difference.

I have guineas too. In fact it would make me want to buy the house more

My DB has two indoor female GPs and they STINK

MMAMPWGHAP · Yesterday 20:18

Yes. Because I am allergic to them.

UnderMirkwood · Yesterday 20:19

Wouldn't put me off, even if they did smell a bit, especially if I could see their cage was clean and they were well cared for. The only smell that has always put me off when buying property is cats, it is impossible to get rid of unless you rip up all carpets and flooring that cats have pissed and 💩 on, so I would always pass on a property that smelt of cats unless it was a total refurb, but not cute guinea pigs.

hahabahbag · Yesterday 20:23

Yes, would be off putting because animals do smell, the bedding, the sawdust or whatever you use, their waste… I know someone with them indoors and her house has a distinct odour. Same with cats and dogs too, you can’t disguise it, I wouldn’t buy a house with cats unless it could be professionally deep cleaned including carpets before we moved in due to my allergy

SnozPoz · Yesterday 21:49

Guinea pigs do smell. If I liked the house then I could see past it but I know my husband probably wouldn't. I'd say an outside cage is a small price to pay to get the right buyer

herbalteabag · Yesterday 22:03

Well, we used to have indoor guinea pigs and someone bought our house, so I don't think it matters too much!
It wouldn't put me off in any way, if there is a smell it can be got rid off.

Lunchtimehelp · Yesterday 22:15

Thank you, lots of mixed replies. I appreciate the honesty.

Allergy is something to think about. I am actually allergic to them, although it's got better since strangely. I would hate someone coming into the house and they have an allergic reaction.

In the past we’ve only bought houses that needed a renovation anyway so if it smells and the carpets are threadbare then we can’t wait to get in! 🤭

SpringsOnTheWay · Yesterday 22:21

No. It would be an attraction. In fact when we were looking I was amazed how many homes have the little furry critters in and every house that had them made me smile.

DeftWasp · Yesterday 22:24

This reminds me of a year 5 pupil who announced in my class she was allergic to Guinea Pigs, I excelled at being bad teacher by asking how many she had eaten before she found out😂

SkippitySkoppity · Yesterday 22:26

Not unless adopting said guinea pigs was a condition of the sale

Oh FGS. That's being pedantic. It's irrelevant to the OP's predicament whether it's the actual guinea pig or its home.

But it's not like smelling of cat, which is most likely to be in the flooring, the owners will take the GP's enclosure with them... so nothing lefty be smelly.

Missingguineapigs · Yesterday 22:36

I'd love to view a house with guinea pigs (see user name) but I think I would get an outside run before going on the market, just because some people really can't see past something they don't like in a house.

MeridaBrave · Yesterday 22:38

We had them and they stink but it’s obvious that they aren’t permanent .

Wouldn’t put me off, I love Guinea Pigs. Both our current house and previous house smelled of cats and dogs when we viewed. I had to take antihistamines for the second viewings as I’m allergic. We were buying the houses and not the contents so weren’t put off.

Like I said, if they're too thick to work
out I'd be taking the GP's & their 'smell' with me, that suits me fine, I'd rather not be in a chain with such lemmings !

PurpleThistle7 · Yesterday 22:44

If your house is likely to be popular then I don’t think this is hugely important. If you really need to sell or there are other issues I’d consider putting them outside. I’m super allergic to pets and my daughter would have to wait outside as she is even worse. So it really depends on if you need to try harder.
