Ceiling fans - anyone got one?

Every summer I return to the same question of whether it’s worth installing a ceiling fan/light combo in our bedroom. I’ve found a couple that I don’t outright hate (don’t like the round ones, or the super 80s looking ones with the rattan blades) but still wondering whether to go for it. Anyone got one? Do you recommend?
Photo when it loads is one that looks ok to me.

I've got one. A cheap 80s looking one with rattan blades. It's all I could afford. Grin

It doesn't feel like it's doing much right now but I notice the difference when I turn it off.

Edited to add: mine is in the lounge. It's not silent, so if you like silent to sleep it might annoy you. Personally I love white noise and this is similar

VladsPants · 26/05/2026 13:51

Yes we’ve got one in our bedroom. Best thing we ever bought. I think it was about £100 from Argos so nothing fancy. Much nicer than a freestanding fan and doesn’t take up any room.

Yellowpapersun · 26/05/2026 13:57

We have them in living room and our bedroom which are south facing. We got the biggest blades we could find as small ones are not much good. We only need them on low or medium and they're fairly quiet. The noise doesn't keep me awake and I like silence. They were about £100 each from B&Q a couple of years ago.

Guiltypleasures001 · 26/05/2026 14:03

I had two either end of the front room in my old house
they were Mahogany and brass with large round white globe lights
this was over 30 years ago. I was heavily pregnant and just laid under one during a heatwave
they were huge and I loved them

Ooh, this might be the day I finally press ‘buy’!

Thank you all for your replies, really helpful. And I’m very envious today of those of you in lovely cool rooms!

I actually have the exact one you've posted a pic of in my lounge. It's on right now. Pretty much silent on low. I love it. I have a couple more in the house too, all different, and they are all great in this heat.

WhoaNellie · 26/05/2026 18:53

If you get one that reverses, they're good for the winter because they push the heat that rises back down. So, good to have one all year!

Hippywannabe · 26/05/2026 18:55

I just bought the one on tiktok, it is fab!

That’s great to know!

You must have read my mind - I’ve literally just said the same thing to my husband.

Get one with a remote control. Mine is powered by my light switch and it's annoying getting out of bed to turn it off/ on.

fantam · 26/05/2026 19:20

I have one in my bedroom, basic model from BnQ, but it is by far the best thing ever! it has a remote, different speeds, a timer and works the main light also. Best money I've ever spent and it was only around 100 quid. Got the guy who was doing some other electricals to install it, and he said he's going to get one too, it worked so well.

Go for it.

We've recently renovated and planned the electrical outlet in the centre of each bedroom and the lounge/diner- yet to get the fans though! The in laws have fans from fantasia fans, which seem to have a vast range of styles/colours etc. When we used to stay over, the fan made sleeping in the heat of summer bearable.

TheBirdintheCave · 26/05/2026 20:35

Yeah we have one. It’s so loud at the moment as it’s unbalanced. Really makes a difference to the heat in the living room though!

GooseCreekandtheRiver · 26/05/2026 20:42

Yes, we have the Philips ones in all of the bedrooms and I wouldn’t be without them.

I know you said you don’t like the ones that combine with the light though.

I like that the blades fully retract when not in use and the remote control. And of course the actual cooling function. They reduce the actual temperature in the room by about 2 degrees, plus of course it feels cooler because of the breeze.

I love them and want one but aren't they a pain to fit?

DH fitted ours. He’s a competent DIYer but not an electrician.

WhiskyandWater · 26/05/2026 21:35

We trialed a cheapy camping rechargeable one from Amazon - it was amazing so bought a fantasia one. It’s ok but the small cheapy one was better and since fitted hooks in my daughters’ rooms to have the rechargeable small ones in there. Cheaper, less mess and better - maybe a halfway house?

This. Have one in both the living room and bedroom as they’re south facing in a new build. Game changing in the summer. Cheap 80s style one in the bedroom that was around £45 from Argos. Bit of a more modern fancy one from Debenhams in the living room that was £130.

Yep DH fitted ours, he’s not an electrician just a self taught DIYer.

DrJump · 26/05/2026 21:41

We have them in all the bedrooms and living spaces.
Ours have a reverse mode too so can move heat around during winter. This is fab for drying clothes indoors.

In summer I use a little spray bottle and spray up at the fan for a cool mist. Bloody blissful.

They also help keep flies away when the windows are open.

Onacuctustree · 26/05/2026 21:43

I have them in my kitchen and bedroom.
Pig ugly.
But for the four days a year they are needed... They work well.
I inherited them.

Nofeckingway · 26/05/2026 21:49

Why did people install them in the 80s . No heatwaves then was there ?

WildLeader · 26/05/2026 23:22

We’ve got a massive one in our living room. It’s a high ceiling barn with beams

game changer in summer AND winter when you can reverse the blades to bring warm air down

it’s not 80s rattan, it’s beautiful wood propellers, cost loads but it had to be right for the room.
