Ceiling fans - anyone got one?

Every summer I return to the same question of whether it’s worth installing a ceiling fan/light combo in our bedroom. I’ve found a couple that I don’t outright hate (don’t like the round ones, or the super 80s looking ones with the rattan blades) but still wondering whether to go for it. Anyone got one? Do you recommend?
Photo when it loads is one that looks ok to me.

We trialed a cheapy camping rechargeable one from Amazon - it was amazing so bought a fantasia one. It’s ok but the small cheapy one was better and since fitted hooks in my daughters’ rooms to have the rechargeable small ones in there. Cheaper, less mess and better - maybe a halfway house?

Have you a link to the camping ones please?

Why did people install them in the 80s . No heatwaves then was there ?

Of course there was. The new high may temps recorded in last few days beat a record from 1944. 1976 was a heatwave year. Yes we get hotter weather in more recent years, more often, but there’s always been heatwaves.

@CatastroCat see if this works -

we lived in a normal 80s ex council house and I wondered this but the ceiling was too low for a ceiling fan it would’ve been dangerous. the white centre would be about 8 inches lower than the ceiling. I imagine it’s the same for 10000s of homeowners

Livpool · 27/05/2026 15:50

I had one years ago and loved it! Gutted we don’t have one in this house

We are in a similar house, which is why we have the low profile LED light style ones. I out my hand into one like OP wants because I stretched.... Still have the scar!

GasPanic · 27/05/2026 16:18

I am feeling that the cost to benefit ratio of one of these is quite high.

Currently trying to figure out how to mount it on the ceiling. My best guess is to put a bar between two joists and attach it to that.

Crikey! I shall keep my hands to myself around the fan.

Everyone was traumatised by the summer of 76!

I’m sure you’re all on the edges of your seats, wondering if I bought a ceiling fan or not…
I had this one installed this morning, and am absolutely delighted with it. I can’t wait to go to bed!
It’s reduced on Amazon at the moment, as well.https://amzn.eu/d/0fS4vd2F

How has it fared in the heatwave?

Sunshineandrainbow · 26/06/2026 17:44

I would also like to know how it has faired in the heatwave @TotallyJacquelineHigh
Thanks

TotallyJacquelineHigh · 27/06/2026 11:29

@Arewethereyetarewe and @Sunshineandrainbow- it’s been an absolute lifesaver in the heatwave. I am delighted with it and thinking about getting another one for the other bedroom on this floor. It’s obviously not in the same league as having A/C but it’s made being in the room bearable, and its sleep/night-time mode (it cycles between spinning really fast, and a lower speed) has meant we have managed to get some sleep.

I live in Mallorca (so hotter than England even at the moment) and the best thing I have done is install ceiling fans in all the rooms. I don’t use air con, just keep these on all the time. They really help and are cheaper to run than air con. You can also reverse the blades in winter to push heat down. I would say don’t get the ones with the lights in the centre as the lights are quite pointless. Do get ones with remote controls. Mine are all mellerware brand.

Arewethereyetarewe · 27/06/2026 13:25

I spoke with an electrician yesterday and they suggested that a good fixing to the ceiling is needed eg block of wood between ceiling and joists.

Ours is a 1930s house. Is this what you have found?

Chimneyissues · 27/06/2026 13:27

I saw someone on Instagram that had installed on - it looked like a normal light until you switched it on and the blades came out.

Just looked up mellerware and their website only appears europe based.

Their fans look great 😊

Not a clue - I handed over the box to the electrician and he fitted it! The reviews seem to suggest that a competent DIYer could do it but we definitely wouldn’t be confident to do it. They are pretty heavy so agree you want a good fixing, certainly.

That’s great to know!

Did you commit to one? I am not googling the same e

TheGoodOnesAreAllGone · 15/07/2026 21:21

Yep, we have them in our bedroom and living room. Would struggle to sleep without one in this heat

Yes, and it’s brilliant. I got a Phillips one, rather than the one I originally posted a picture of.

No - I bought a Philips Olas one from Amazon, like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-Temperature-3000K-4300K-6500K-Dimmable-Function/dp/B0DTQ5F7KJ
I actually really like the way it looks. I think the ones like you shared where the blades tuck away would have looked really out of place in my house, but I guess it’s all just down to personal taste!
