Where would you live and why?

Hi all

I have a massive dilemma - I am old, free and single. I am looking at retirement and have no geographical ties, so can move anywhere in the UK. My budget is around £300k.

Areas I have ruled out (no offence to people who live here) Cornwall, couldn’t cope with the tourists, Wales - far too hilly (I have dodgy knees), North East England - the one part of the UK that I don’t have any friends/or relatives. Scotland, probably too far north. The rest of the UK, I have friends or relatives within 2.5 hours.

I would like to live within 30 mins of the coast, in a friendly community.

Where should I move to? Help

Need more info. Do you drive? Do you have a pet? What do you want to spend your time doing? How many rooms do you require? Are you future proofing?

Crispynoodle · 24/05/2026 23:22

Northern Ireland you’re always near the coast!

Penkie · 24/05/2026 23:30

If you're old, isn't Eastbourne the place to live?

I drive, I have a dog, I ride, I do art, I walk. There is just me. Number of bedrooms is irrelevant, I want a community.

I especially like north Norfolk. I would live inland a bit, where it’s cheaper and quieter but not too far from the coast.

Or Blackpool, or Gloucester - thanks for your input

Chichester or Salisbury a little far inland. Christchurch could be on the list. Why is is that a good place to live? ❤️

Lytham St Annes?

Thank you, but NE, no family / friends nearby.

I have looked here before, but a little outside my comfort zone 😕

Lytham St Annes is in the north west!

Whitstable in Kent? I don't live there but whenever I've visited, it seems to have a really nice vibe. There's an arts centre, right on the sea, lots of lovely coastal walks and countryside nearby.

Whataflippincircus · 25/05/2026 00:10

Christchurch is very nice but it’s expensive. You won’t get much there for your budget.

HeddaGarbled · 25/05/2026 00:11

Holt, Norfolk.

Holt, Norfolk.

Holt is lovely, if you can afford it. Even the supermarket is expensive.

North Norfolk. Flat, near the coast, gorgeous beaches. Your dog will love it. And you can drive to Norwich when you need a city fix. Can't help with actual towns/villages as I just go for weekend breaks.

The Wirral

Sheringham, Norfolk.

Some great places in Suffolk that seem very good value for money

Ilikewinter · 25/05/2026 07:28

Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire - independent pubs and shops, nice and flat, woodland walks for the dog and just 40 mins to the coast with some of the best dog walking beaches I've found!

CoffeeAndCats3 · 25/05/2026 07:31

How big would you like - rural/village/town/city?

And would you prefer a flat or a house?
