Should we ask buyers to pay for appliances, carpets and blinds?

We're (hopefully) moving and I've just been filling in all the details about what is and isn't included.

We have a range cooker (10yo but good), very new dishwasher, newish Miele washer and tumble dryer, wine fridge. We also have nice Roger Oates carpets and fitted blinds.

Should I be asking for money for any of this? I don't want any of it (except maybe the washer and dryer if the people we are selling from don't leave theirs). What's the norm?

In 1999 the sellers were asking big money for the pretty much everything including the sun faded triangular blind in a conservatory. They took the light bulbs but left the blind.
A private detective turned up a couple of months later trying to track them down, they'd left debts and run off to the continent.

Honestly, the last thing I would want to do when moving is hoik a step ladder round the house sorting out light fittings, were they family heirlooms?

My mistake. I meant a couple of shades from one bedroom. They were replaced with other shades. There were ceiling lights in the kitchen, hall, living room, cloakroom and master bedroom. We mostly used lamps for task lighting.

Tho when I bought my house 27yrs ago they took the lightbulbs - loo roll - shower curtain and bathroom cabinet

but left these really manky heavy brown yet dingy heavy curtains that didn’t ask for in the living room

In my 47 years I have never heard of anyone taking the carpets. I think it is worthy of eye rolling.

If you are only 47, then I'm guessing you hadn't bought or sold many houses 25 years ago or longer then.

We brought our carpet here with us, when we moved in. It had cost a lot of money and lasted another 23 years.

When we bought our previous house, we agreed to pay a purchase price of just under the stamp duty threshold and then £1500 on top of that, direct to the vendors "for carpets and curtains". That's how normal it used to be.

Leave the blinds and carpets but try to sell your new-ish appliances privately before you move as the buyers won’t be interested in paying for them.

if they hadn’t been bankrupt I’d have chased them for the hundreds of pounds it cost be to remove all the crap they left behind

Somewhere in the middle.
Carpets leave, part of the house.
Curtains, will they fit in new house? Take.
Cooker, offer it for no cost but be prepared to remove if they don't want it.

No it isn't. I was being serious.

I refused to pay for either. They took the shed, leaving a concrete base with 4 bolts sticking out of it.

I got my solicitor to write to them saying that as they weren't leaving the pond, the hole was to be filled in and made good Grin And that's what they had to do. They must have emptied it with buckets and then removed the liner, then filled everything in and levelled it. Maybe they strapped the liner to the roof of their car, I've no idea! Sooo much pointless effort.

I’ve never seen charges for carpets or installed blinds because you would need to make good if you took them. Appliances are fair game, but be prepared for them to say no. If the appliances etc were written into the description the estate agent marketed with you should not be adding any additional charge because the amount they offered will be based on that description - I deliberately put range cooker not included on my descriptions

My buyer of my last house wanted to buy all my furniture (I was downsizing, divorce sale) agreed to me leaving all my crappy old furniture and paid for the better stuff, was brilliant, she even sent a letter via estate agents offering to send extra money after the sale because we left extra old furniture! (I said no, was our gift to her) it was tatty 25 year old mfi special!

Only ask money for something that you definitely have a plan for taking with you if they turn down your kind offer. What honestly will you do with a fridge and range cooker that don't fit in the relevant spaces, and curtains the wrong size for the windows of your new place?

To be fair to the OP. Even though it seems obvious to most people you wouldn’t take carpets, the fixtures and fittings form includes them plus stuff like light fitting even loo roll holders!! So I can see why the form would make you think hang on- am I supposed to sell this stuff. We had to click included, excluded, none or a price to sell stuff for. But we put included for 99% of things

When people took carpet, how did it fit in the new rooms?! Like if they were bigger which is likely when moving. Presumably you must have also needed a carpet fitter and maybe new underlay sorting?

I only asked for money for my washing machine because it was 6 months old. I said if they didn’t want it I’d take it with me. I included everything else including a range cooker.

I’m confused by all the outrage here. We’ve definitely been asked to pay for this stuff before- to me that’s normal. Haven’t moved in the last decade though so maybe it’s changed. But it’s literally on the form- you have (or at least had) to tick whether things are included and also put the price, and then that price is treated separately so it doesn’t attract stamp duty.

If a seller did this to me I'd say crack on and take them as I know how much it will it will cost to get them them disconnected and removed - unless something was brand new, in warranty and to my taste. I'd make it a condition of sale. In my experience people who try on the charging for their 'good' carpets, dishwasher or whatever often just leave them behind anyway when they find out the cost of removal which is how I ended up with a spare washing machine to deal with.

If I move I will take all my light bulbs simply because they are all smart bulbs and easy to remove. However, I will replace every one with with normal bulbs because it would be wrong not to and I worry about my Karma.

If you would use it if they didn't want it,then yes, fine to ask for a nominal amount. If it's no use t you going forward then I can't see why you would ask for more money

If you want to keep the washer and dryer, take them. The rest should stay for free.
