Has anyone got a living room with no fireplace?

just a television? We are relocating our living room in our house and we've umm'd and aah'd over whether to have a fireplace or not. We never use our fire at present. Would it be odd not to have one and just have your television on view as part of a focal point?

Furball · 19/06/2008 20:59

we've just had an extension built which is now our living room it has no fireplace, only 2 sofas a tv and minimal stand and a sideboard. No ornaments, no dusting no nothing. looks fine.

dizzydixies · 19/06/2008 21:00

hi disco - we've got no fireplace but have run through a gas pipe during renovations to give us an option though

I want to put the tv up on the wall and have the furniture facing the furniture instead of the farking tv iyswim as I don't want a sodding great telly being the focal point of the room

WelliesAndPyjamas · 19/06/2008 21:03

no fireplace but have two sofas facing each other so focal point is whoever is oppostite you not telly

MrsBadger · 19/06/2008 21:04

we don;t have a fireplace but the TV isn't the focal point - there are two sofas facing each other and the tv is at the end of one

so if you want to chat you sit facing each other and if you want to watch tv you share a sofa

IME any layout works better if you can't see the tv as you walk into the room

bluewolf · 19/06/2008 21:07

if you can have a fireplace becos it is fucking brilliant and makes the horrible doom and gloom of winter an JOY. HI haven't got one now becos too skint and in shit flat but my mum's house had one when I was kid. Moist eyes at memory of uniform on fireguard in morning

dizzydixies · 19/06/2008 21:09

WingsofaAngel · 19/06/2008 21:12

Hi Dizzy we don't have a fire place in our new house and to be honest don't really miss having one.

DiscoDizzy · 20/06/2008 08:15

Thanks all. We are struggling with what we think we want over what we think we should have. Its given us food for thought knowing that there are others out there who've chosen not to have a fireplace. Struggling know as to whether we've ordered wrong sized sofas as like idea of having them facing each other. Why does it have to be so bloody hard. Maybe we should get an interior designer in to give us a few ideas?

No fireplace in ours... currently central focus is a kid's play table but I fully intend to have a fireplace-sized fish tank there once the kids grow out of it [evil cackle emoticon]

MrsBadger · 20/06/2008 08:30

no need for an interior decorator, jus get a few mags (or flick through them in Tesco)

We dont have a fireplace! Didn't think it was completely necessary to have one, although i know what you mean about having it as a focal point. It would be nice to have one but the room is too small and we would lose one valuable wall if we had one so it's a deffo no go for us.

Furball · 20/06/2008 08:48

look here and here for ideas

edam · 20/06/2008 08:52

We don't have a fireplace - 1970s house built without one. I've got a lovely tall bureau given by my mother that has glass doors on the top part. Shelves filled with special photos and ornaments. Place it opposite the door and sofa so it acts as a focal point.

harpsichordcarrier · 20/06/2008 09:02

yes, we have no fireplace at all. no one else ever notices

DiscoDizzy · 20/06/2008 09:40

Thanks furball i'll have a look at those links. I've looked at loads of magazines for inspiration, but they all seem to have fireplaces in them and I struggle to see what it could be like without.

For those who have sofas opposite each other, where is your television? Is it in a corner or at one end of your sofas, where you'd normally have a fireplace (i suppose). I really like that idea and its one i'd thought of before. We've ordered 2 different sized sofas for an 'L' shaped seating arrangement but i'm now having second thoughts.

we have a living/dining room you have to walk through to get to the kitchen. The dining table is in the bay window so that only leaves two usable walls (iyswim)
one one side is a large 3-seater sofa and facing it is a 2-seater with the tv next to it.

Before we moved the dining table in (from what is now the playroom) we had the same sofas in an l-shaped layout (the 2-seater in the bay window) and it felt much less sociable.

Piffle · 20/06/2008 10:37

new house here no chimney, it has two radiators and is warm.
Previous owners put in faux fireplace that looked naff. We have big ikea besta tv unit with cupboards either side. 2 big couches and kids toy boxes. Tis fine for us.

DiscoDizzy · 20/06/2008 10:49

Well i've moved our living room to have sofas opposite each other and whereas I like it, DH doesn't so thats that. Back to the L shaped arrangement and the decision of a fireplace. Thanks for all your responses.

We ripped our fire place out because it was horrid we have a nice shelving unit and our tv unit insted

frecklyspeckly · 21/06/2008 21:39

Our previous owners ripped out lovely chimney breast (s) and fireplaces - I was stupidly blind to this fact when I looked around the house. Basically we have a through lounge/ dining room with two spaces where the fireplaces should have been in each room along the long wall. We were luckly to buy a suprisingly tasteful (honest)electric fire and surround second hand. You do not need a chimneybreast to install this kind of fire and it cost us eighty pounds. In an ideal world we probably would have liked a proper fireplace but it was an inexpensive compromise. I personally think bogie has right idea - centrepiece can be a shelving unit, or a piece of art, or even the telly!!

Kindersurprise · 21/06/2008 21:44

LOL

Only on a British forum would you find this question. I live in Germany and we are very exotic as we have a fireplace, imported from UK. DH flew home with the fireplace as his "luggage" a couple of years ago.

Lots of people here have a unit or a chest of drawers as a focal point. I think that an unusual or antique piece of furniture can be a good alternative, perhaps a bureau? (sp?)

Anna8888 · 21/06/2008 21:45

No fireplace and no television
