Has anyone got a living room with no fireplace?

just a television? We are relocating our living room in our house and we've umm'd and aah'd over whether to have a fireplace or not. We never use our fire at present. Would it be odd not to have one and just have your television on view as part of a focal point?

Here is an Ikea one

Have a look at the Ikea website for living room ideas without fireplaces. What kind of style are you looking for?

No fireplace here either, we have a living room/dining room so have split the room in half with a sofa, would love to have had the option of an open fire its a housing association new build.

We have no fireplace, we do have a chimney breast thuugh but it was blocked up and we never got round to putting in a new one. That wall is decorated with feature wall paper and has a large mirror.

Ous sofas our opposite each other, we were going to put the TV on the wall but I went off the idea and as our rooms our quite dark I wanted to jeep the mirror.

Our TV is on a low stand on the back wall with bookcases on either side.

We don't have a fireplace and the room does seem to miss a focal point. I don't really miss it now as am used to it, but do wonder if it's the reason the house hasn't yet sold. Pics of front room here my house

Anna8888 · 21/06/2008 21:56

Goingslowlymad - can you not make one or both of your sofas perpendicular rather than parallel to the window?

twinsetandpearls · 21/06/2008 21:56

The front room does look a bit bare but it should not be stopping a sale. It looks a lovely house very light and airy.ours is here we are not getting many viewings and I think it is just a slow market.

Anna8888 · 21/06/2008 21:57

And perhaps put a vase of flowers somewhere in the picture?

I like bare and have a very bare flat but we do have flowers and books about.

twinsetandpearls · 21/06/2008 21:59

I have been told I have too many flowers maybe you could borrow mine.

Anna8888 · 21/06/2008 22:00

Lots of lovely peonies around at the moment

Amphibimum · 21/06/2008 22:02

one of my living rooms has no fireplace

GSM
I agree that your house looks lovely but the photos are not so great. The front room does look a bit bare. Could you borrow a rug and a coffee table from someone. Put some flowers on the table. And unplug the wires of the TV, that was the first thing I noticed when I looked at the photo.

Amphibimum · 21/06/2008 22:07

goingslowlymad - your house looks nice... but i woudl say the pics of the living room and dining area look a bit empty and soulless. i know neutral is supposed to appeal to more people, but that just looks so bare. i guess maybe its hard for peope to imagine it looking/feeling cosy? rugs, pictures, bookshelves... more stuff in there might help.
just a thought - you seemed to be asking for input.

goingslowlymad · 21/06/2008 22:29

Thanks. No-one would believe that there are two adults, 4 children and a mad dog living here from those pics so maybe that's why it's difficult for a family to imagine living here.

Am definately going to invest in a couple of nice rugs and sort out the TV wires. They are jobs I know need doing in the back of my mind but because I am used to living here I don't notice what needs doing any more.

There are usually flowers on the dining table but may invest in a nice bookcase for that end of the room too.

We've got no fireplace in our living room. Am used to it now but did think it odd at first and toyed with idea of putting it back. You gain a lot of space without them though

DoubleBluff · 21/06/2008 22:39

We have a new house and recently took out the naff olde worlde fire place.
was going to put in a ' modern fireplace' but wasn't keen on those fishtank/ gravel ones, so didn't bother have a nice oak unit with tv on and two facing sofas instead, more practicla and modern and cosy.

twinsetandpearls · 22/06/2008 12:11

Why do they put those fireplaces in new houses?

madhairday · 24/06/2008 21:00

We are moving into new build and it has no fireplace. we have bought big corner sofa and some chairs and a nice TV unit/shelving thing for along the wall where the fireplace would be. will make for much better use of space imo.

bottersnike · 25/06/2008 16:40

Our house has a horrible electric fireplace stuck on to the wall, and adds neither heat nor style to the room!
We're planning on ripping it off, moving the sofas around, and buying a TV unit.
Dh has been mentioning this for ages, but I wasn't sure it would work, so he will be pleased when I mention this thread
