Is £10,400 a normal removal quote for a local five-bed move?

ramamamadingdong · 15/04/2026 09:26

I am planning a move from a 5-bed house with garage, some home gym equipment and outdoor furniture, to a similar-sized property that's 2.5 miles away.

Got a quote from my local removal company (great reviews) and nearly fell off my chair. £10,400 including full pack (it's cheaper for a fragile-only pack, but not significantly).

We're in Suffolk and in a fairly affluent town. Is this what it costs these days, or did I look like a total mug when the guy came around to measure up?

I do wonder if some companies base their quotes on what they reckon the people from perceivably wealthier households might be able to easily pay without hesitating or quibbling.

Ergo they aren't quoting loads more because you have a 5-bed house of stuff to move, but rather because you can afford to have a 5-bed house in the first place!

I've contacted 5 other companies now, thanks for the recommendations. I got a couple from NextDoor, too. Will update this thread when I have some numbers in, for those playing along at home.

I look forward to your update.

£10, 000 is now responsible for me spluttering coffee everywhere!! Not a fucking chance matey boy!

if all the other local firms are part if thus extortion racquet ud be ringing companies in near by towns. Or Australia- likely to still be cheaper!

Very funny. No maggots or foul smells here, that I'm aware of!

Definitely wasn’t suggesting your house is gross! Just the high quote instead of saying they can’t do it

International removals in particular I found always ‘presume ‘some corporation is paying and that the punter therefore won’t care

Hmmm, interesting - like the car repair quotes that mysteriously skyrocket as soon as they hear that it's an insurance job!

Isobel201 · 16/04/2026 12:02

Admittedly it was a smaller house, but my dad rented a van and we moved stuff ourselves.

My father in law used our recommendation and a company that were 35 miles from him to move 130 miles - he had silly quotes so went out of county to where neither current home or new home was- still was well within budget and fantastic job - they wrap everything hugely, chairs, tables, bar code and room colour code , use iPads etc - they had done our international move and we didn’t get1 item broken - hence why I recommended- they also stored for him for 8 weeks between selling and buying

Would be good to hear who this firm was? I am moving soon in Norfolk and have found the price vary wildly.
OP your quote was mad as all the others have said. Do shop around. Ask on local whats app/FB groups, ask your estate agent, ask friends for suggestions.
I moved from a 5 bed house into a much smaller place nearby over 2 days and it was under 2K a few months ago. They werent great though so I cant recommend them but all prices were 2-3K. It didnt include garden stuff or a piano which I organised separately.

CrescentMoonLanding · 16/04/2026 13:41

Well obviously not.

Growlybear83 · 16/04/2026 13:43

This thread has made me think about getting more quotes. Weve had four so far and I didn’t think the lowest one of £8,000 was too bad, but maybe I should reconsider. We've been told by all four companies thst it would be a four day move in total with six people on each day for a full packing service. Do people think it varies much by area?

Saisong · 16/04/2026 13:49

That's a crazy quote!

18 months ago we moved a 4 bed + garage a mile up the road. We packed (except the stuff on hangers that went in their wardrobe boxes), and they supplied boxes and tape 2 weeks before. This also included a large upright piano in a seperate van.

Total cost inc vat £1250. This is in leafy SE area too.

The removal went smoothly, the move itself almost killed me! And now we're knee deep in renovation, which is another level of buggery altogether 😏

Exactly this, I'm an electrician and will massively over quote for work I don't want - then if on the rare occasion my quite Geta accepted I just sub it out and take the profit - but usually they go elsewhere.

Why can't you just say "thanks but no thanks" like a normal decent person instead of being passive aggressive and making people feel like shit?

Why would they feel like shit?, why would they take it personally? its pretty standard practice, seen as bad practice to refuse work, better to be seen as too expensive but available than never available.

Occasionally the quote gets accepted and we either fit it in or sub contract it out and make a return on the difference.

JKRgreatestfan · 16/04/2026 14:23

Try Pickfords or similar as they might actually want your business. I priced up a local firm for my last move and they came in at twice as much as Pickfords did. Both for a full pack.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 15/04/2026 11:02

We moved 6 months ago, 4-bed house.
It was too far for one day, so more expensive because it was double the wage cost.
£3,000 including full packing service.

I'll add to that. The full packing service was just the driver+mate for a house full of breakables .Some posters have quoted multiple packers which surely increased the cost substantially.

We used Matthew James - they did us an international move out and back and then a domestic one too - excellent experience so did my father in laws too - Only had 2 packers on the job but a lot of stuff and we were packed up in 7 hours - they did an online zoom estimate going round the house . It was the level of care I appreciated most - thick padded wrapping etc , Color coded rooms

Will be interesting to see what comes back . We have just moved a five bed house ( a lot of stuff ) only 1 mile. It was three days full pack and move . Quotes ranged from £5-9k - Central London. However ck teary composters views a move I think the expensive guys did want the job - they kept chasing and then asked why they hadn’t got it - the difference is baffling!

Nowvoyager99 · 16/04/2026 17:53

I moved from an extended four bed with garage full of shite and it was £1300. To be fair the journey was only three miles but your quote is crazy.

Sandflea9900 · 16/04/2026 19:00

We moved from a 5 bed house in Cambridge to a 5 bed house in Hertfordshire at the end of 2019, including a full packing service. Cost was £2800 including VAT.

Bluebellandroses · 16/04/2026 21:44

Some insider info on how a local removal company quotes from a friend of a friend. Apparently they price a certain number of jobs competitively and the remainder they will take pot luck on and just throw out a ridiculous price. I'm not sure how many operate like this but if it is commonplace your job priced at 10.4k may be one of the latter.

Have you got 3 or 4 local quotes? May be the going price for a house of your size. When we moved a few years SW19 to a KT postcode, from a 3 bed to a 3 bed, it was more than £5K so your quote may be about right.

however get your multiple quotes in and see.

unfortunately we had to go with who was available in the end rather than the best quote.

pouletvous · 17/04/2026 07:08

When i moved, we had 4 quotes. All very similar. You need a few companies on standby in case they’re booked up once you agree a date

can you do your own packing?

No. Far more recently than 2016.

DancingNotDrowning · 17/04/2026 07:23

That sounds about right for high level service.

We paid similar. Chandeliers/light fixings were boxed in made to measure crates as was art work. Furniture was properly emptied and wrapped.

The move was planned to occur over two days: day 1 pack and load all but beds. And short term suitcases. Day 2 pack remainder and unpack other end.
