Is £10,400 a normal removal quote for a local five-bed move?

I am planning a move from a 5-bed house with garage, some home gym equipment and outdoor furniture, to a similar-sized property that's 2.5 miles away.

Got a quote from my local removal company (great reviews) and nearly fell off my chair. £10,400 including full pack (it's cheaper for a fragile-only pack, but not significantly).

We're in Suffolk and in a fairly affluent town. Is this what it costs these days, or did I look like a total mug when the guy came around to measure up?

That's a farcical amount. No-one can tell me that's normal. When we moved from a large 3 storey 4-bed house around a decade ago, to a small 3 bed, it took 2 trips as we had soooooooooo much stuff. (60 mile round trip too, twice!) and a local small removals firm charged us £570. Even 11 or so years later, with everything going up in price, COL crisis etc, over 10 grand is a joke. I would say £3K at the most.

It's stupid though. Why don't they just be honest and say "do apologise but we're incredibly busy" if like you say, they don't want the job. Surely asking for an inflated price looks worse for any company

100% this. I have been trying to get a quote for 3 fence panels and 4 fence posts to be supplied and fitted, to cordon off a certain part of our garden that only has like a chicken wire (that we have attached a trellis to,) and we have had 2 quotes so far. £800 and £850. For 3 fecking fence panels and 4 fecking fence posts. Probably 1.5 hours work. I'm baffled.

We got a job twice that size done 7 years ago (6 fence panels and 7 fence posts, supplied and fitted) for £275. It makes zero sense.

I've just had two quotes for a similar move in July including full packing, lots of art and breakables, a peloton and two pianos (one a grand piano). One quote was £5k and the other £6.5k. (I'm pretty sure £1k of that was the piano element.)

Crikeyalmighty · 15/04/2026 10:54

I think someone else has the right answer - they don’t want the job but on the off chance you are mad enough to accept it will sub it out and split the considerable profit

ramamamadingdong · 15/04/2026 10:54

Thanks everyone, the guy is clearly a joker or thought I was loaded and stupid.

I hope you can get a decent quote. 😘 Surely £3K should be the most you should be paying? And even that sounds a lot.

ClearFruit · 15/04/2026 11:01

Absolutely insane. I paid about £600 in 2020 for a 3 bed move a mile away. They also dismantled and rebuilt a double bed, a set of bunk beds and a loft bed.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 15/04/2026 11:02

We moved 6 months ago, 4-bed house.
It was too far for one day, so more expensive because it was double the wage cost.
£3,000 including full packing service.

Mcdhotchoc · 15/04/2026 11:05

They don't fancy it.
Last time we moved ( involved packing up van one day and unpack next day), we paid £1750 and that included 120 mile drive, one huge lorry and a Luton box van. 5 people loading and 4 unloading.
That was a few years ago but probably no more than £2500 now. We had a quote from Pickfords for roughly what you have been quoted. Carry on looking

ramamamadingdong · 15/04/2026 11:08

Inviting other quotes now. It's silly but I feel a bit cross with myself that the guy thinks I'd pay it. He seemed really pleasant.

I’ve done a few moves similar to yours OP - I think realistically it won’t be cheap as they will need 3 or 4 to move and pack in quick time but quote should be around the £3k mark including full pack

blackberryhill · 15/04/2026 11:22

Insane pricing. A 4 bed move with full pack (local) cost us £1,250 18 months ago. I think the first post has it - they don't want this work.

user12350445451 · 15/04/2026 11:25

Maybe its a typo and should be £1400, contact them and double check

BelBridge · 15/04/2026 11:28

That’s outrageous! They are taking the piss. We have moved towns a couple of times in recent years and it had never cost more than £1000. That was with us packing but we also took some of our smaller trees with us!

Parsleyforme · 15/04/2026 11:56

I would much prefer a company to just say sorry we’re fully booked and can’t do the job instead of wasting everyone’s time by providing a stupidly high quote. They might also lose business because the person might tell their friends and family to avoid that company instead of the person thinking they’re really popular and busy

But it does make think of the song from this video

Very funny. No maggots or foul smells here, that I'm aware of!

Always get 3/4 quotes to compare cost

doesnt Mean always go for the cheapest but gives you a ballpark

PILEALLTHEPILLSONTHEFLOOR · 15/04/2026 13:31

hahahahah wtf no!!!!!!!! NO. that is a rip off. Can you and hubby not do it yourself? I know a 5 bed is pretty big but if you get all hands on deck you, some mates round and the kids, you might manage with a rented van.

Affluent town in Suffolk...are you a fellow bury st edmunds dweller? ❤

Growlybear83 · 15/04/2026 13:36

We’ve had quotes of between £8,000 - £15,000 for a very similar sized house move and service. We’ve got a very full 5 bedroom house, with loads of garden stuff, planters, statues etc, and will be taking everything with us, but I was very surprised when we got the first quote, which was also the highest. All three companies who have given us quotes said that it woukd be a four day job for them. I don’t know how prices vary across the country, but I’m in south London and moving a similar distance to you.

Growlybear83 · 15/04/2026 13:39

Just to add, the company who gave us the most recent quote said they would need almost an entire vehicle just for the stuff in the garden, sheds, and cellar.

Yes, I agree that it's bonkers.

If it's a 5-mile round trip, surely that's much easier and quicker for them than a Brighton to Aberdeen job; so why would they quote far more (not even the same price) for the former in favour of the latter?

It's like an all-you-can-eat single-price buffet turning you away because you only took a tiny plateful of cheap staple foods last time you came!!

Defiantly41 · 15/04/2026 13:57

We paid 4.5k for 5 bed, 100 mile, 2 truck move 18 months ago including 3 packing days including garage, sheds and outdoor furniture

Ha ha! Woodbridge, actually! For that price, we might do it ourselves. I am heartened by this thread, though, and looking forward to seeing some other quotes.

Ask on your local Facebook group for recommendations of people who people have used - not friends and family! Men with vans are fab and moved me from a 4 bed house recently with a lot of boxes, gym equipment etc and were under £2000!

Defiantly41 · 15/04/2026 14:24

Please don’t think of doing it yourselves! We had 4 packers for 3 full days, plus the 2 crews for move days, even with all of those working like Trojans, we only just made it out in time for completion (plus cleaning of old & new houses). There is real skill as well as strength involved in furniture removals (5 bed houses but only 2 people, no kids)
