Recommended walk in shower screens

We had our bathroom re-done 5 years ago.
We went with a quadrant shower cubicle with a sliding door.
I LOATHE it 😖
It's SO hard to clean, and I now wish I'd had panels instead of tiles in the shower area.
I've got someone coming out to give a quote but I wondered if any of you had any advice or tips if you've done similar?
Thanks

I’ve recently had a walk in shower installed instead of a bath.

My tips are, get the tray as big as possible, and get the shower screen as long as possible otherwise you’ll end up having to have a hinged section to stop water splashing out, and a hinged section means gunk building up in the hinges. I think the minimum recommended gap to walk through is 600mm. Get a shower with controls that are separate from the shower head(s) - means you can turn it on without getting wet. I got a Mira Evoco Dual. The only downside to this shower is that is either on or off. You can’t control the flow rate.
I got tiles rather than panels, but they are large ones (60 x 30cm) so less grout to get grubby than with small ones. Get grout that is a similar colour to the tiles otherwise it dominates, unless that is the look you are going for! I know it’s fashionable to have white tiles but I think it makes it look far too clinical or like a public swimming pool.

ETA: get an extractor fan put in the ceiling in the sower cubicle area if you can. It is far more effective being close to the source of the steam.

we replaced the doors with a curtain.
so much easier to get in, get out, clean... the curtains just goes in the washer regularly.

I have the exact same problem! Driving me crazy! So so much time trying the keep it clean. The big tiles aren’t a problem at all.

Advocodo · 15/04/2026 12:08

Bumping!

Raven08 · 15/04/2026 12:11

Thanks for the responses!
We have an extractor fan already.
I'm planning to ask for wall panels in the shower area then a walk in cubicle and tray.
The tray will have to be quite large

I have exactly the same problem. Curved cubicle and the areas around the sliding doors are a nightmare to clean. Also, one of the runners broke and it was an awful job to find a replacement.

I'm just about to see about replacing mine with doors that open rather than slide. I like the curved shape of the cubicle but don't know if it's possible to get curved ones that open, not slide,

I’ve literally just cleaned my bathroom which has a quadrant shower. What is it you find hard with cleaning it? I spray mine with limescale cleaner, use a sponge to spread it all over the surfaces, use a narrow brush to get in the crevices then rinse it all down. Takes 5 minutes.

With me it's the continual build up of brown water sludge and being down on my hand and knees scrubbing away with tiny brushes and other stuff I've bought to try and do the job. There's the inside bits, then the bits in between the sliding bit and the rim of the tray.

Bloody nightmare and I've better things to do with my time,

Raven08 · 15/04/2026 12:32

I clean it very regularly.
The tracks get mouldy despite this, the tray has tarnished i think due to the constant cleaning (?) and the mechanism sticks.
I hate it

^ absolutely this
I've spent so much money on special brushes, special cleaning products that promise the earth, even a battery charged scrubbing brush
Nothing works

Edited

I tried putting cotton wool soaked in bleach along the mouldy sealant and it took the shine off the bits of chrome it had come in contact with so now it looks awful.

I can't wait to get rid of it.

Raven08 · 15/04/2026 13:00

@RaraRachael
Me too...I've used hg mould spray, I've even made my own cleaning products!
They are poorly designed wrt cleaning

and if the door is on tracks there is alwas a bit that can't be cleaned.

DinoLil · 15/04/2026 13:42

I recently changed my bath to a walk in shower. It's a 1.8m tray, glass screens with a flipper door. I love the flipper door! I use a window vac after showering to make cleaning easier. I also had a grab rail put in as you go into into just for extra safety. The shower is a Mira rainfall one, not sure of the model, but I'm very happy with it. It has an eco setting, various temperature and pressure settings. I was so fed up falling in the previous set up and having a shower curtain and rail wrapped round my head!

Just editing to say no tiles but I've got panels. Also easy to hoover up with the vac.

I have a curved shape with a door that opens out but it so minging! Mine wasn’t fitted correctly which has added to the problem.

Are you talking about a stand alone shower then putting a curtain round it?

Advocodo · 15/04/2026 18:56

And a lot of my shower bits are getting corroded.

Raven08 · 15/04/2026 19:56

I don't think ours was fitted brilliantly tbh
And the rails on mine are corroded, too.
And I've also got areas of damage to the tray from the cleaning products, I assume
Life is just too short for this shit

I am going through exactly the same thing. Are you able to PM me when you get your quote please.

it's in a corner, so 2 sides with a rail
across the opening

Piglet89 · 16/04/2026 10:11

@Raven08I feel your pain. The first home we owned together had a quadrant shower cubicle. It was a HUGE ball ache and the door sliding on a curved track couldn’t take it and kept sticking. It was absolutely atrocious and we replaced with a walk in shower as soon as we could!

Pastit12 · 16/04/2026 10:27

We have a walk in shower to replace bath and guy who installed it ( did good job ) recommended hinged screen I am really disappointed in it it’s a nightmare clean and found it leaked also so we rarely use it as it’s intended now
if it wasn’t for the bloody faff and more money I would have the whole thing replaced with a large all in one screen.

Greentea4 · 16/04/2026 11:01

I love a walk in shower but went for a wet room type as cleaning the floor is easier without a tray. Also did away with the glass shower screen and have a curtain. So much easier as we have spare ones and they are machine washable.

Dbank · 16/04/2026 11:15

I hate the rattly shower cubicles with a passion.

We now have a single flat sheet of clear glass, without a tray, just a gradient on the tiles, with a gully at one end.

We have a 1 Meter long squeegee for the glass and a floor squeegee, makes it really easy to wipe down. (although we have a water softener, so it doesn't mark if you leave it anyway).

If you can't do a wet floor, you might be able to do it with a low profile tray if you have the space for the glass.
