Best places to buy affordable homeware and furniture when moving house?

Hi, I’m in the process of separating and moving home to a new area. Basically starting over again. I haven’t bought anything for the house for a long time. Where would people recommend, please?
I like my style but I can’t pay through the nose. Please recommend away!

Facebook marketplace. You have to be quick for the good things though.

Ikea for new stuff.
British Heart Foundation for second hand. All their electrical goods are PAT tested and have a six month warranty.
Facebook Marketplace
Local Facebook community pages
Freecycle

Dunelm is reasonable, can find some bargains on Wayfair and Amazon (shelving units and the like), Ikea can be reasonable for knickknacks, kitchen stuff etc, maybe not so much anymore for furniture.

Pepperedpickles · 17/03/2026 23:30

Argos, George at Asda online, The Range, b and m.

Flintgranet · 17/03/2026 23:37

Argos for sofas and chairs, also for hangers, ironing board, etc. Ikea for bed, mattress, bedding, rugs. Charity shops for dishes and glasses. Wardrobes and tables you can sometimes find on local Facebook or freecycle.

Hope you enjoy your new home!

JYSK also worth a look

Steelworks · 17/03/2026 23:59

To max may be worth considering.

Auction houses sometimes have huge bargains.

ChikinLikin · 18/03/2026 01:58

Agree. Try your local auction house.

MissingSockDetective · 18/03/2026 03:06

We have always found Dunelm to be pretty good and The Furniture Market is also lovely quality and good value. Ikea is handy for bits and pieces, especially storage type things.

I have bought many things from the local Community Transport place, a furniture reuse outlet they have.

ThatIsABigSon · 18/03/2026 08:00

Debenhmas online! We have recently moved and have bought so many pieces of furniture and household items from there as they have worked out cheaper than Dunelm/The Range/IKEA etc and far nicer.

Arregaithel · 18/03/2026 08:10

@MM000

As mentioned previously, the most reasonable (price wise) are;

The BHF (fyi, this link requires an easy captcha completion) and The Range

rumred · 18/03/2026 08:10

The auctions locally often have top quality furniture. Buy well, buy once.

GenieGenealogy · 18/03/2026 08:14

Charity shops. There is so much around - plates, kitchenware, pictures, soft furnishings.

Myblueclematis · 18/03/2026 08:16

I have assorted items of furniture from both Dunelm and Argos. B&M do some quite nice inexpensive small furniture items, coffee tables, drawer units etc.

For homewares, Matalan have some nice things like linens, towels, small storage units and kitchenware, crockery etc.

Next Clearance

RampantIvy · 18/03/2026 08:17

When DD moved into an unfurnished flat shortly after graduating (so rather short of funds) I bought her a fridge, a washing machine, a bed settee, a cuddle chair a TV stand, a table and a bedside cabinet for a total of about £500 from the British Heart Foundation. The only new item I bought was a bed from Ikea.

When she moved out I donated it all back, including the bed. The BHF don't accept rubbish furniture donations so while none of their stuff is new it is of decent quality.

80smonster · 18/03/2026 08:22

Skip the high street- it’s mostly poorly made tat - especially where furniture is concerned. Look for designer lighting, solid wood shelving/consoles/tables and vintage sofas on ebay or facebook market place. Beds you may prefer to buy new, if I was struggling for budget I’d go for a footed divan (you can often have the base customised) and weight the spend toward good quality mattress and bedding (feather, natural linen etc).

Boundary outlet if you have one nearby.

JYSK have some nice furniture and do really good offers. I recently got a lovely new dining table.
