7m by 7m garden (new build), is this too small? Based on the north east and the house is a detached 3 bed. It’s just me and my little boy but worried it won’t resell in the future now that the sale has completed.

OP with kindness, you’ve bought it and it’s done, there is no point in ruminating now. Please don’t lose sleep worrying about re-selling. There are all kinds of people and family set ups with all kinds of varying needs for garden type and space. Your sellers found a buyer (you) and you will find one too when the time comes. Focus on enjoying your new home and making the most of the garden space you have. I’m sure your little boy will love playing in it.

Big gardens are a burden to many , an expense and drain on time so there will be a market

it usual to have panics after buying a house

I hope you have many happy years living there

hattie43 · 19/02/2026 22:33

That’s not really a garden it’s outside space . A 3 bed house is for families yet there’s no space for the children to play .

itsthetea · 19/02/2026 23:12

Children can play in much smaller spaces a shouldn’t be kicking footballs around in residential gardens - that’s what parks are for

kerry19834 · 20/02/2026 06:35

My garden is 4m deep and 8m wide. It's south facing and backs onto fields.

Small but fits my needs

Yes my parents garden is 180 ft long and 5m wide. They are in their late 70s. They have grassed over huge amounts. But they still have to have a Gardner. They're house is an old farm workers cottage nothing grand at all. Just a huge plot

Enjoy your new house!

And don't worry about selling until you need to sell. For some people a small garden will be a positive. You don't need to appeal to everyone, you only need one person who wants it.

Ryanairmess · 20/02/2026 06:55

It depends what is behind. If it backs onto a playing field/green space you could have a lovely area to eat outside and not be overlooked/your DC have space to play. If it is straight on to another house it will feel very cramped.

Skybunnee · 20/02/2026 07:00

I think many people don’t want a big garden

the bottom of my garden is my garage so it’s just a brick wall which I can add climbing plants etc to. It is a corner plot so nobody is on the left to me and only a single person on the right so it’s not bad.

Like someone said if I managed to buy it surely someone else will want it too.

I’ve got a fairly big garden and it takes a lot of time and money. In time I will want to downsize and a small garden will be appealing to make into a cosy space.

Depending on your child’s age you could put in a mud kitchen set up. That doesn’t take too much room and does keep young ones busy outside without having to run about with balls etc.

newornotnew · 20/02/2026 07:19

If not too overlooked you'll be fine. Many people have no time to garden. Think how popular terraced houses are, with just a yard.

Baital · 20/02/2026 07:33

You also have a garage, which takes care of storing bicycles etc, so the garden doesn't have to accommodate those 😀

cantankerousoldcrone · 20/02/2026 07:44

I have a tiny garden and one child. I love it, it's a little oasis. I love sitting in it. We went to the park a lot, which is very close. He also played out the front with other children most of the time when he hit a certain age.

Just enjoy it while you live there. It would be luxurious in London! Lots of inspiration online for how to make a great garden. Climbing plants at the end are a great idea to give a nice view from the house.

This.

Plus 7 m x 7 m isn't even that small. Ours is about that, certainly less than 8 m x 8 m and I think it's fairly big.

rightoguvnor · 20/02/2026 09:19

Sounds quite generous compared to new builds round here (Kent, developers paradise, cram ‘em in and charge ‘em half a mill, never mind about the flood plain).
If its just the two of you, likely you will be there quite a few years so I wouldn’t worry too much about resale value now. It sounds just the right size to avoid any intensive work but enjoy sitting out in.
wishing you all the best in your new home 😁

It’s east facing so sun in the afternoon.

If it’s east-facing, don’t you get morning sun rather than afternoon sun?

Newmum1998x · 18/02/2026 21:23

Im just so worried it won’t sell as much as the others that are 9m by 9m roughly

I wouldn’t worry. You probably paid less that those houses with 9m gardens. And if you have no plans to sell then it isn’t a problem.

Cerialkiller · 20/02/2026 09:50

I'm a garden designer and you can have a lovely space for 7x7 and won't have to spend massive amounts to transform it or maintain it. I'm also East Anglia, mines only 6x6 and still big enough for the kids to play and hosting BBQ just about.

It's all about what you do with it. There's all kinds of tricks for making it feel spacious and useful.

Yes sorry I did correct myself later on, it’s morning sun

No plans to sell for at least 5 years

Thank you, I have attached two photos. The garage door and patio up to the garage door was an extra cost.

you may actually get the evening sun too due to the space to the side of the house, we're south east facing and the sun rises on the back of the house but due to being on a corner when it sets we get it in the back corner of the garden too. We're in the NE in a 4 bed detached new build and our 3 bed neighbours garden is a similar size to that you've pictured, they still have a small patio with dining furniture out there and their kids play out in summer, we definitely all on our road treat our gardens as an extra room
