Is Solihull far away enough from Birmingham?

I live in Edgbaston and HATE Birmingham. I’ve been here for 6 years and I think it’s bloody awful. It’s run down, unsafe to the point where I could list multiple areas where I barely feel safe driving through, never mind getting out of the car and there are so many areas that don’t even feel like you’re in the UK. I see teens around and would be throughly depressed for these to be the children that my own would attend school with - lots seem to be wannabe ‘gangsters’, rude, intimidating etc. I find the vast majority of Birmingham incredibly depressing.

We can’t leave the West Midlands unfortunately.

I was wondering if Solihull may be a better fit for us. My oldest DC is starting school next year so we still have time to move without interrupting education. My question is - is Solihull (particularly Dorridge/Knowle) far enough away from Birmingham to not be affected by Birmingham’s ‘issues’?

IABU: Solihull is still too close to Birmingham
IANBU: Solihull is much better than Birmingham

I live in B30 and love it here. I feel much safer than in London.

Can’t say I’m in the city or Edgbaston much but where we go out in Kings Heath, Stirchley and Harborne feel absolutely fine to me.

Clearly they were using that as an excuse as to why they were hanging around women's bed / curtained areas when challenged by staff at the behest of @Hatebirmingham . Her experience seems valid to me and personally I would not want to live in the vast majority of Birmingham areas either

Interesting that those calling out the OP on racsim are ignoring the posts from other people of colour who have experienced parts of Birmingham as feeling very unsafe.

Anyone can say they're anyone on the internet, take it all with a pinch of salt.

JHound · 18/02/2026 13:09

Yes honestly. As do many others who live and work around there.

To be clear I definitely think it is far more rundown than when I was always hanging out there as a schoolgirl.

But I don’t yet feel it so unsafe I cannot be anywhere near there.

Edited

Having a son as a police officer really opens your eyes to things, is all I can say.

And the police who work there don’t like it. They don’t tend to put young female officers there.

Thought you said it was constant.

Yes, the staring was. A dr then saw one pull back my curtain.

Do we need to go into this much detail about this? Why are you so adamant that I’m wrong rather than accepting that this is actually what happened?

You’re right Birmingham is a shithole, Solihull’s nicer but not far enough away imo

What part of what I said was performative?

Telling someone not to “come” to a particular place as though your opinions define that place is pretty performative TBF

Probably because you've ignored all the area suggestions and 90% of your posts are bashing ethnic minorities.

Isn't that what OP's doing?

Why are you so bothered? It’s obvious you don’t believe a word the OP says, so I’m not really sure why you keep chiming in, unless you’re just looking for a fight………

When my work had a job over run in Birmingham (Architects) I was asked to move up and work there. I refused. I did visit the area though. This was in 00s and area was Edgbaston. Didn’t seem to bad then but like I say I only visited.

Leaving aside that anybody can claim
to be anything online, why do you assume none of us challenging OP are “people of colour”.

KidsDoBetter · 18/02/2026 13:15

Those who are denying that this approach to white women can be an issue within certain subgroups of south east asian origin men need only look to the Casey Report re the Rochdale grooming scandal. Calling that out is not racism - but fear of racism protected these men and harmed hundreds of vulnerable girls and women for a long, long time.

lovethepuppies · 18/02/2026 13:15

Look at berkswell or Meriden . Solihullls going down the tubes too tbh

gototogo · 18/02/2026 13:15

Worcestershire reading between the lines has what you are after, have family there and it’s the opposite of multicultural, though choose a more affluent area otherwise I’m told there is probably your worst nightmare moving in, asylum seekers in provided housing! Personally I like Birmingham and used to live near the cricket ground, a bit rough around the edges but never felt unsafe then or when I go back but I’m a city person at heart and the more mixed the better, I miss living in a multi cultural city in fact, we live in a nice area but it lacks something

Yes, I'm sure you'd love a clear field to say whatever you want without being challenged.

MN doesn't work like that.

Bromptotoo · 18/02/2026 13:16

Hatebirmingham · 18/02/2026 11:56

No? I have no problem with multiculturalism. But when there are areas where white British people would be stared down, forgive me for not wanting to live near there.

Where are the places white people are stared down?

angelos02 · 18/02/2026 13:16

What is wrong with wanting to live in an area with a similar demographic as yourself? Plenty of ethnic minorities do exactly that.

StarlightRobot · 18/02/2026 13:17

I think it is interesting how many mumsnetters seem outraged when women who complain about sexual harassment are not believed, and yet the OP’s account of being harassed while in hospital is met with snorts of denial and accusations of racism. I have no reason to disbelieve the OP and generally err on the side of believing women who complain that men are behaving inappropriately towards them.

I find it so funny when a person doesn't like that you are making a valid point so they criticise you for contributing to a public forum where the OP has invited commentary.

I mean we have said OP should just say she wants a majority white area - she is denying that’s the case.

It's hilarious, isn't it? Like I shouldn't be bothered by people perpetuating the same old racist tropes about an entire community.

Would you like to tear into my experience too?

Pretty much the same at Birmingham Women’s when I gave birth to my last baby.

twilightcafe · 18/02/2026 13:18

Solihull is down the road. Literally.

What is stopping you getting on a bus or train to have a look for yourself?
