House directly opposite a run way?

GoGoSuperBug · 11/02/2026 07:22

We are interested In a house, however it is parallel to the run way of a smallish airport. (One terminal) We currently live pretty close and don’t particularly notice the noise of the planes however the house we like is literally across the road.

the big blue bit is the airport and you can see the runway, the Red Cross is the house we like.

Will the house shake? Will we get used to it?

We lived in a house in a similar position years ago . We never really noticed the noise , it didn’t interfere with our enjoyment of our home .
i used to use one particular take off as my alarm call to leave the house and get the bus for school 😂

I think it depends on how many flights a day, what sort of planes and is there a curfew overnight. Small regional airports are used by budget airlines and holiday charters, so there is a risk of flights from Malaga etc, arriving in the small hours, I suspect it won't be like Heathrow where the Long Hauls start arriving at 0600 and there's one every couple of minutes, plus take offs.

Chersfrozenface · 11/02/2026 09:53

If I've got the right airport, on average in 2025 there were around 67 flights a day, arrivals and departures.

That includes light aircraft, business jets and cargo as well as scheduled and charter flights. The cargo flights are allowed to operate 24/7 but it doesn't look as though there are many of them.

(Have I got the right airport? Six scheduled flight arrivals spaced out today from 10.00 to 23.05 and five departures between 12.45 and 17.20.)

sophiasmithh · 11/02/2026 09:55

I’d only consider it if you can sit in the house at a few different times including evening and see how it feels with the windows open and closed. Even if you get used to it, you can’t switch it off when you’ve had a headache day I’d want to be completely sure before committing.

itsthetea · 11/02/2026 09:56

I wouldn’t - yes you will almost certainly get used to it but a more peaceful location is usually better for health

theflat · 11/02/2026 09:59

I wouldn’t consider it a smallish airport. To me that would be a domestic airport with mainly light/small prop types. The airport you are taking about is an international airport and while it’s no Heathrow, it will be plenty busy. Lots of noise, it’s not just the aircraft noise you have to consider but also traffic noise and implications. I would give this a wide berth.

GoGoSuperBug · 11/02/2026 10:26

I didn’t do a very good job of hiding the airport, it’s Liverpool John Lennon, so only one terminal but yes lots of international flights.

I am impressed that you managed to find the data @Somersetbaker I don’t even think to look.

We currently live a 10 minute walk away so naively assume it wouldn’t be much different.

Not me! It was @Chersfrozenface

Chersfrozenface · 11/02/2026 12:18

I didn't have the right airport!

Liverpool John Lennon has on average about 135 aircraft movements per day including light aircraft, business jets and cargo as well as scheduled and charter flights.

Today there are approx 20 arrivals and 20 departures but I'm sure it's much busier in holiday season.

Ilovemyshed · 11/02/2026 13:31

I wouldn’t. For the simple reason that now it could be fine, 10 years away it may not. The airport is there, could be expanded, changed or used by military.
Not a chance would I take that risk.

Bakerygirl · 11/02/2026 18:13

I wouldn’t touch it. My parents bought a bungalow about 35 years ago near Gatwick Airport. It was impossible to sit in the garden in the summer and have a peaceful afternoon!

RachTheAlpaca · 11/02/2026 18:49

I'd love this, would happily sit in the garden watching the planes all afternoon on days off work :)
Then when you go on holiday you'll save a fortune from being able to walk straight into the airport.
You could even rent your driveway out to holiday makers! We don't live near to an airport so pay to park on a nearby driveway

WonderingWanda · 11/02/2026 19:33

Not for me, noise, pollution, parking and traffic would put me off.

MyballsareSandy2015 · 11/02/2026 19:36

I’d spend all summer sitting in the garden on flight radar with a glass of wine.

Noodles1234 · 11/02/2026 19:44

Liverpool isnt Heathrow, but they’re only going to go one way and that’s up.

you may need to invest in triple clase windows and you may find you need to decorate inside for hairline cracks, window cleaners and car being cleaned often for petroleum in the air settling on anything. Personally this close I would not.

Love this 😂We live on Gatwick flight path and I know it’s about 5am because I hear the long haul flights coming in for landing!

Hellohelga · 11/02/2026 19:48

Personally I wouldn’t. However there’s a train line at the bottom of my garden that never bothers me, and a lot of people would say no to that. It depends on you.

You have described me! I even recognise the engine sound of the Emirates airbus 😂

Belindabelle · 11/02/2026 20:22

According to google that road is a nightmare in the summer with people leaving their cars when they go on holiday.

notimagain · 11/02/2026 20:52

Tough to call without you actually going and listening

You're not going to get overflights, and you are a decent distance north of the runway, but you're certainly going hear some engine noise.

I wouldn't be concerned about noise from the terminal itself, I'd be slightly more concerned about the noise you might get from the Ravenair general aviation/flying school ramp, that's just over the road to the east..(BTW it's the coastline on the map that's the big give away to runway spotters...).

Good Luck.

MostlyGhostly · 11/02/2026 21:39

My horse lives next to a runway at the bigger airport up the motorway from you and some days when I’m doing stable jobs I can taste the fumes from the aviation fuel. Not all the time every day, but enough to put me off moving any closer. I live on a landing path and the noise doesn’t bother me but that fuel taste/ smell would.

Cookiedough123 · 11/02/2026 22:06

I saw your pic before I saw your second post and immediately recognised it as Liverpool 😂 I would also be concerned about the parking etc! It’s not a majorly busy airport like Manchester and I’m pretty sure they don’t have many overnight flights unless there are delays. I think you will only know if you spend some time there and see what it thinks. There are loads of houses on that estate next to it tho so it must not bother people!

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/02/2026 22:09

I grew up on the housing estate showing in the top of this picture just above Concorde's nose (and that was one hell of a noisy plane)- that's Filton runway and aircraft works. We also used to have visits from The Red Arrows and the early Airbus planes were built there. I now live under the flightpath for Bristol Airport (planes are usually around 2000ft when directly overhead).
You do get used to it.

TakeMe2Insanity · 11/02/2026 22:52

Well it would be a whole different level of flight radar uber geek!

My aunt and uncle both worked for an airline in another country and so had to live close to the airport. The upshot was saying to people on the phone, sorry I can’t hear you a plane is coming into land etc. Now this was a hot country, so most of the “windows” had mosquito nets for most of the year and no glass hence hearing the planes but nice wet England with triple glazing might be fine.
