House directly opposite a run way?

We are interested In a house, however it is parallel to the run way of a smallish airport. (One terminal) We currently live pretty close and don’t particularly notice the noise of the planes however the house we like is literally across the road.

the big blue bit is the airport and you can see the runway, the Red Cross is the house we like.

Will the house shake? Will we get used to it?

Not for me - I would be too paranoid about the air pollution

Sunflower07 · 11/02/2026 23:16

I wouldn’t. I have family who used to live in a village near Manchester airport and you could smell the jet fuel in the garden and had to shout to hear each other if outside - more so in the summer when there are more flights. Can only imagine it’s a lot worse the closer you are to the runway. As others have said, it could expand in the future too.

@MrsMoastyToasty I used to live in Heston just of the Great West Road and I used to love seeing Concorde coming in to land. You could feel it in the air around you.

To those who like flight radar there’s a game called Skycards where you have to collect planes using the radar systems. You want to catch planes going to different locations to unlock those airports. You can also catch different models etc.

Oh no don’t tell me that 😂

@ExitPursuedByABare it was the only plane that rattled the windows (and we had large windows in our 60s house!).
I actually missed the sound of the planes (all sizes from Cesnas to Concorde) when I moved away for a few years. If I had my bedroom window in my childhood bedroom open I could hear the sounds coming from the hangars..
I find the noise from helicopters and hot air balloons more annoying. Bristol is the UK home of hot air ballooning and we often have them land on the rugby field about 500m away. Usually when I'm trying to gave a weekend lie in.

Health risks with the pollution so no.

I think resale could be very tricky.

Friendlygingercat · 12/02/2026 00:51

Not so much the noise - you can get used to that. I have lived in places with trains and heavy goods lorries thundering past in the night. However I would worry more about the pollution and smells plus the resale value. Yes Liverpool airport is small (native scouser here) but it could be developed in the future.

MidwifeMum20 · 12/02/2026 11:56

Whenever i drive to this airport, i’m always thinking how much I’d hate to live by there.. sorry! The road is so busy and there’s always cars parked up ready to collect someone.. I think that would bug me more than the noise! The view isn’t great either. However, this might not be an issue for you. I’d suggest parking up a few times at various times of the day and see how you feel. Bear in mind your current worries if this isn’t your forever home.. future buyers will have the same concerns.

GoGoSuperBug · 12/02/2026 15:20

I hadn’t even thought of smelling/tasting fuel. Will my washing stink?

Further down there does seem to be lots of people parking but the house is quite away down the parking lay by thing so might not be as much of an issue. We will keep driving past but I suppose the issue will really show itself in the summer.

Tough to call without you actually going and listening

You're not going to get overflights, and you are a decent distance north of the runway, but you're certainly going hear some engine noise.

I wouldn't be concerned about noise from the terminal itself, I'd be slightly more concerned about the noise you might get from the Ravenair general aviation/flying school ramp, that's just over the road to the east..(BTW it's the coastline on the map that's the big give away to runway spotters...).

Good Luck.

Ah that’s interesting, the coast line didn’t even occur to me to be a giveaway!
