Please help me lift this horrible grey room

Long story short but this room was my ex H’s taste, not mine, and as it was ‘his’ room I didn’t go in it much.

I want to reclaim it and make it bright and lovely. obviously turn the skirting boards light again.

I hate the grey carpet; however it’s relatively new, doesn’t show the dirt and I can’t afford to replace it.

What colours could I paint the walls to lift it and make it feel warm, or failing that at least bright witt this colour carpet?

Many thanks in advance

Thank you! I had also thought pink, maybe like a blush shade?

Sulking room pink, I have it in my kitchen and love it. We had it colour matched at B&Q

Ooh this! I’d go chalk white on ceilings and wood work, and neutral curtains. And a nice large neutral rug will cover most of the carpet you can see. And I’d also go with a few nice cushions (dunelm or next have some decent velvety cushions in to make it feel nice and cosy) and some bits n bobs from Oliver bonas - they have lovely bits in the sale - or just unfinished wood and paint them with silk finish tester pots in greens pinks and lemony colours (I’ve just added touches where I’ve painted the frames myself as I couldn’t afford the ones I wanted, and got some spray paint to re paint plant pots and a lamp base and it’s turned out ace, just what I wanted at a fraction of the price).

Our sitting room is same. Colourful rug, coloured curtains and some large frame prints on the wall makes all the difference.

Seen as its only painted you could be quite bold as £20 and tin of emulsion to change it

lime green
bright pink

I think I'm the only person who doesn't like the idea of pink walls with a grey carpet 😂 if it was me I'd go with some sort of white for the walls and then add lots of lovely artwork, plants, lamp shades etc

Love this!!!

We use Dulux Blossom White. It's a pale oyster shell pink. It is a very calming colour and will lift the grey carpet.

Dingdongavon · 01/02/2026 21:13

Zara have nice rugs too. I like this but even if you get a plainer colour/a warm neutral, it’ll change the feel of the room

I'm team paint the walls and skirting boards white and add colour with rugs, pictures and plants. Personally I'm not a fan of pink and grey interior decor

Dingdongavon · 01/02/2026 22:38

I agree. I wouldn’t do pink and grey.

Lourdes12 · 01/02/2026 23:13

Paint the walls either white or green. Lots of bright art prints with some warm red

Lourdes12 · 01/02/2026 23:23

i would buy an inexpensive large rug to cover most of the grey carpet

orangewasp · 01/02/2026 18:46

I'd paint it white but have loads of bright prints and plants

Yes me too.
Take it back to white, keep it light & airy and add colour with large bold & bright prints on the wall, cushions and accents. Plants & shelving with books.

MrsMacYorkie · 02/02/2026 00:06

I see a grey carpet and am instantly taken back to my 80s bedroom, grey carpet and sunny / lemony yellow walls. How I loved that combination (still do😂). I think that would really warm up a north facing room. Also love colour scheme suggested above with the teal blues and yellow.

SneakyZzzz · 02/02/2026 00:07

Mustard colour. Goes well with grey

Here’s what ChatGPT gave me from your photo,

That's clever.
The oriental type rug is good, not sure about the pink, maybe pale green?
A couple of Tiffany's style, stained glass lamps would be good too.

caringcarer · 02/02/2026 01:42

I'd go for a large bold rug in darker grey, with splashes of burgundy. Burgundy curtains or blinds and a few burgundy and charcoal grey velvet cushions. Put some wall art up.

housethatbuiltme · 02/02/2026 14:00

My first thought was navy blue half wall paneling and a bright white on top.

North rooms need every bit of light, so white is good. It's also the easiest colour to touch up when needed. White on white on white is extremely easy to paint in the first place, with no bother about cutting in. White tends to make a ' display feature' of whatever is put in it, so every plant, painting or bit of coloured fabric will be shown off like an exhibit (and can easily be changed, unlike the decor or carpet)

The french door will be cold, so don't give up thick curtains, just leave them as thermal insulation then double-hang with pale ones over the top to hide them.

There will be some walking in and out of the garden, so maybe a natural rush mat or a coir one could cover the carpet? Again, leaving the existing carpet hiding underneath as an extra underlay will be good for insulation. And, that will mean the covering one need not be cut and fitted, because it won't matter if it goes right up to the room edge.

A useful trick is to have lamps with different bulbs, or shade colours. One, maybe the central ceiling one, could be a natural daylight one. (Good for S.A.D., apparently) Just switching on another could bathe a white room in a pink or orange glow, or whatever is pleasing.
