New bathroom with shower curtain?

ToothSmush · 01/02/2026 14:11

We are re-doing our bathroom, it is small so will be a shower over the bath setup. These days the default for this seems to be a glass shower screen along half of the bath, but I'm thinking an old school shower curtain along the bath would work so much better for us. It's what we currently have.

We only have one bathroom and it gets busy in the morning, so with a shower curtain one person can shower in relative privacy, while someone else is brushing their teeth, brushing hair etc.

Also I used to live somewhere with a glass screen and it was a right pain to keep clean.

Has anyone else kept the shower curtain when doing a new bathroom?
Is it still a normal thing to do?

Yes. And would do it again. Easy to wash and keep clean. Cheap to replace. Plus the added privacy

FrozenFebruary · 01/02/2026 14:16

No, i didn't,I can't stand them!
but it's your bathroom it doesn't matter what anyone else has done.

you could get one with privacy glass or just get everyone better organised for their turn in the bathroom. Or brush teeth in the kitchen..

I hate the glass screens, it's awkward having them fixed in position, and you either have to clean them constantly or put up with them being streaked. Shower curtains all day long.

SpikeGilesSandwich · 01/02/2026 14:27

I love the shower curtain, you don’t have to constantly clean it like the stupid screen!

CoolFineDoneWicked · 01/02/2026 14:28

Also there are so many nice shower curtain designs.

Interested to hear why you can't stand shower curtains? Is it something practical or aesthetic?

I love my shower curtain, I've bought one that compliments my bathroom so much.
Living in a hard water area I think I'd lose the plot if I had a glass screen that needed cleaning.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 01/02/2026 14:31

If it works for you, do it. It's not like you're making some weird modification to the house that will be expensive for a future owner to reverse.

Fodencat · 01/02/2026 14:33

Team curtain. No manky glass to clean. The curtain can be taken down for a wash

Juicyapple44 · 01/02/2026 14:43

Team shower screen, curtains give me the ick. They get mouldy and cling to you shudder.

BlahBlahName · 01/02/2026 14:44

Also team shower curtain. We have a small bathroom and it's so much easier. Easy to keep clean and tucks out of the way.

Chiefangel · 01/02/2026 14:47

Shower curtain in our bathroom. Can wash it on a hot wash, folds away nicely. There is nothing worse than a manky shower door with limescale all over it.

PickledElectricity · 01/02/2026 14:48

I have the same set up and got a curtain pole while we dithered about what kind of glass to get - it's been 5 years now 🤣 I don't think we're getting a glass screen any time soon.

I like having a shower curtain because the bathroom is grey and plain and I can change the style/design along with the bath mat - I've got a bit of a rotation going for seasons/holidays. It's fun to be able to change up the look. Plus the shower curtain helps to trap the steam in I think.

I also live in London and hard water on glass is a PITA.

minipie · 01/02/2026 15:00

What about a frosted screen ?

Gives privacy, water streaks won’t show nearly as much, and avoids the mould and clinginess of shower screens.

SwedishEdith · 01/02/2026 15:03

I got rid of our screen because I couldn't stand cleaning the damn thing. Switched to shower curtains which are much easier to bung in the washing machine. They're weighted so you don't get the clinginess of the past.

I can’t stand them for both of those reasons. They look bloody awful with the added bonus of being a harbour of bacteria from everyone. The only way to avoid this is to take it down and throw it in the washing machine weekly. Trust me, that’s far more faff than cleaning a shower screen.
in a small bathroom with multiple users, you’re better with an actual shower and ditch the bath completely.

Ladymuckypuddle · 01/02/2026 15:07

I hate shower screens they are a nightmare to clean. I put in a quarter screen then a ovel shaped curtain runner above for the shower curtain to go along. I love it easy to wash or swap to a different one and it stays in a round shape plenty of space away from my body. It's like a little spa cocoon. Never gets mouldy because these days shower curtains are made with anti mould stuff in them.

roses2 · 01/02/2026 15:12

What a fantastic idea! I've been looking into replacing my shower doors but cannot find replacement doors and was told by a builder replacing the whole enclosure might damage the tiles.

A shower curtain is a fab idea! Imagine never having to clean all that bastard glass ever again.

Yes, this. The clinging 🤢.

I have a rubber squeegee for the glass screen- a quick swipe & it's good. I have teen boys and I've managed to train them to swipe quite easily. They even do it in the downstairs shower cubicle too!

I can see how the curtain would cover the person in the shower much more, though.

Puffalicious · 01/02/2026 15:17

I'm pleasantly surprised to hear that they're weighted these days & plenty folk prefer them. I can also see the glass cleaning would be a pita if you had hard water (lucky enough to have super soft here).

Let us see a lovely pic of new bathroom with curtain OP.

Rocknrollstar · 01/02/2026 15:33

The fittings on our glass screen broke and for the past 6 weeks we have been using a shower curtain. A new screen has now been installed and I just think it looks better and more modern.

NeedToKnow101 · 01/02/2026 16:05

I really like shower curtains and I almost kept them when I did my bathroom up, also because it’s my only bathroom and so people can come in if desperate while someone else is in the shower. I got glass in the end as my son hates the feel of shower curtains and I’m glad I did as the bathroom looks bigger. Apart from that if you like shower curtains go for it.

This 100 times. Plus shower screens are so essy to clean, keep a squeegee or whatever they are called in the shower and give it a swipe after every shower. Akways looks good.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 01/02/2026 16:18

We have shower screens. Luckily we are in a soft water area so they stay fairly clear.
however, my DH knows a bloke who played football with a bloke who slipped in the shower, fell against the screen, it broke into three massive spiky pieces and sliced his shoulder and chest open
😱😱😱😱
so now I’m terrified of slipping!

And curtains are so old fashioned looking, glass looks so much better
