Do these colours work together ?

The brownish red would be for a cabinet and the neutral is for the walls.
Colours are LG ashes of roses and Portland stone.
I need a terracotta sort of colour as our terrazzo floor has specks of it in, that or ochre

Pics of hallway and the floor - excuse the mess we’ve not long moved in !

Anyone around? What kind of white should I go for on the ceiling ?

I think those colours go well together, I have virtually identical ones in my north facing living room! I would consider doing the ceiling in the Portland Stone though so it matches the walls.

We have picture rails, will it matter if these stay white ? We hadn’t planned on repainting the woodwork

Umm I don't think it would look bad as white goes with everything but I think toning it in with the walls might look more stylish? I mainly have white ceilings/skirting in my house but the rooms where I've gone bold and used a different coloured ceiling or coloured ceiling or woodwork do look better and more interesting.

AndeanFlamingo · 29/01/2026 12:51

Those colours look good together but I wouldn't have any white. Choose either one of your two colours or something that tones well for the woodwork and ceiling.

LibertyLily · 29/01/2026 14:32

I definitely wouldn't have any white. I would do the ceiling/above the picture rail in Portland Stone and the picture rail itself in Ashes of Roses same as the walls...but then I'd do all the joinery in the wall colour 😉 Alternatively, all joinery (including pic rail) plus ceiling/above picture rail in Portland Stone.

Thanks guys I will use the Portland stone for the ceiling too. Out of interest why is white a no?

The floor colour and the colours on the door look cool and the paint colours look warm. Are you looking to replace the floor or door in the near future?

I have no idea. I'd always use pure brilliant white on a ceiling. Anything else is going to give off 'vintage tobacco stain' vibes.

I just think it can be a bit dated now, people tend to colour drench ceilings to match the walls or similar tones at least. I think white is fine in darker rooms or with cooler colours though. I think you can afford to be more daring in a hallway anyway as you're not spending much time in it.

Oooh no way, they’re 115 years old so very much staying 😊

I like the idea of colour drenching but really really can’t be bothered to redo the woodwork right now !

Hey Op, we've gone for similar colours in our snug. F&B Red Earth on the walls and a mushroomy colour on the ceiling. I think it looks nice? We have victorian coving and ceiling roses which would be too much to colour drench so we have left them white. It does give a more traditional / less contemporary look.

It sounds quite experimental but I bet it looks great ! Would you share a pic ?

I am sure I’ve seen this hallway before - many times.

I wanted to be more daring in there but dh had a moan 🙄 suddenly he is an interior design expert !

If you don't want to face painting the woodwork in a hallway just go with the white (but I'd agree with everyone that the ceiling being the same as the walls is good in a hallway). It's a traditional look rather than a dated one. I suspect in 20 years we'll all think colour drenching is terribly old fashioned.

organisedadmin · 29/01/2026 17:14

I have similar coloured walls (a little bit darker) with drawers in that colour. It looks great

sweetsadine · 29/01/2026 17:17

I suppose it depends on how much you're into these things- I'm definitely into interior design and am very picky about colours, fabric etc. DH just rolls his eyes and lets me get on with it. I'm currently looking for a lampshade to put in a room with a bold wallpaper, I have spent hours online looking at contenders, by comparison I spent 10 minutes looking round the house before we offered on it!

minipie · 29/01/2026 17:24

If you’re getting a specific white for the ceiling then Portland Stone Pale would be the obvious one to go for as it goes with Portland Stone.

Personally I would probably just leave the ceiling in standard white (not pure brilliant which I don’t like but trade white). I don’t much like the idea of a greyish ceiling and think it might make it seem as if the hallway is white gone grubby, whereas a white ceiling for contrast demonstrates that the walls are a colour rather than grubby iyswim!

NB I’m sitting looking at the LG colour card and Ashes of Roses is more of a dull pink IRL than a brownish red. If you want something darker and redder look at Arras. Not sure if you are going off screen pics or the colour card!

Sure, sorry it is dark. The rug is deep red although it looks black in the photos.
