A thread to share the things big and small that you've started, finished, planned or conceptualised.

Inspired by the lovely posters on the What have you done in the garden today threads.

Just took inventory today. Nothing special but definitely important.

I finished the hallway yesterday. Probably nothing today. Possibly do undercoat on the stairs tomorrow. Or possibly going to be cleaning instead as do have some things to do outside the house, visits etc. So may not get the chance to do any decorating.

DaisyMayBojangles · 25/01/2026 09:33

I spent most if Saturday balancing up a ladder. My neck and back hate me.

What DIY have you done today?
Jimmyneutronsforehead · 25/01/2026 11:36

Ooo be careful up that ladder 🫣

Make sure you treat yourself to a nice soak in a bath after for all of that stiffness.

Well done @DaisyMayBojangles
As suspected no DIY done this weekend. But have done sorting/ tidying. So productive nonetheless

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 26/01/2026 08:06

The toilet in DPs new house is all scratched and the ceramic at the bottom of the bowl is all brown. Is the only answer here to buy a new toilet? 😭

This is house is becoming more of a money pit than anticipated.

Still on the stairs banisters, they are the bain of my life currently. Stripping them back to wood as the were chipping & peeling, half way up the stairs so far taken me a week with a heat gun!

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 26/01/2026 09:06

Have you tried that paint stripper that you wrap up and then it just slides most of the paint off?

Not sure about scratches, but is the brown just limescale? Try the black Harpic.

No DIY done this weekend, procrastinating over finishing a couple of jobs. Yet another coat of filler and paint on the boiler ceiling hole last week.

Sorry meant to quote @shouldofgotamortage about their bannisters.

I've seen some videos with this paint stripper stuff for bannisters and you basically cover it with cling film and let it do it's business and then you can easily slide the rest of it off.

I will give the black harpic a go, and cross my fingers and toes that it is just limescale. With the state of all the ceramics in this house though I wouldn't hold my breath.

Sounds amazing. I gave up on mine as it was too much work.

My diy on property has taken a back seat after going to a funeral in Ireland and finding out I have a sibling
So now it’s diy find out what went on there, ( as it seems my family in Ireland hide behind secrets )

On a mission now to go through stored boxes from my mothers house
They needed sorting anyway so it’s given me renewed zeal to clear it all.

Positivepositron · 29/01/2026 15:13

Been busy today.
Did 1st coat of satin on 5 window sills and first coat of primer on the staircase. Stairs took forever, am hoping 2nd primer coat goes on quicker.
Wondering whether I can be bothered doing the 2nd coat on the windowsills. Would be nice as would be a job finished but the children will be home from school and they may interrupt.

Positivepositron · 30/01/2026 14:51

I did finish the windowsills yesterday.

Just one that needs both coats doing as ds had poured something sticky on it so couldn't do it yesterday.

DH put up a picture on the wall today.
But that's all for DIY today.

LibertyLily · 30/01/2026 15:00

None for me for a few days as I've been making cushions/upholstering a chair (not finished), but will be back onto it over the weekend. There's the last (and worst) of the kitchen windows to prep for painting. Then some rearranging of cabinets ahead of fitting worktops and finally plumbing in the sink tap and new dishwasher - although I'll just be labourer for those jobs!

LostTooManyScrews · 30/01/2026 15:14

Oh not today but recently I dod build a partition wall completely on my own.

Im currently putting a cross trainer togther i know that's not actually DIY but I did do it mysejf 😬

Finished the last window sill yesterday.

Not sure which of numerous jobs we have left im going to do next. Probably finishing the stairs.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 03/02/2026 22:22

We have more wall holes to fill in. I'm not pointing fingers but there are only 2 of us doing this and it certainly wasn't me that brute forced wallpaper off and went too hard with the scraper.

Skip came today so it was clear out day today. Still not finished, but feels good to see progress.

This week I've been prepping and painting a Georgian style, 30 pane casement window in the kitchen. It dates from when our Georgian cottage was last renovated in 1965. I'd already painted the two original Georgian sash windows in the room last year and have been dreading tackling this larger one, but I'm over the halfway point now! Looking at the layers of old paint when sanding back etc, it looks like this is the first time it's been painted since 🙄

It's a total transformation, as we're going from white to Edward Bulmer Pompadour which we're using to colour drench the entire space.

I'm having a DIY-free day today. The dishwasher is being delivered later and hopefully over the weekend I'll finish the window whilst DH preps for its installation and plumbing of tap etc which we're aiming to complete the following weekend, along with the first section of iroko worktop.

troppibambini6 · 06/02/2026 11:23

Rrepainted my bedroom ceiling. I did one coat and thought yes I can get away with that…. Finished paint can number one. Started on the walls (also white) with a different can on white paint (same brand still pure brilliant white) saw a patch in the ceiling so painted that patch.
It’s a different colour white. God knows what happened but Ive now had to repaint the bloody lot.
Not easy trying to not get I patchy with a tiny difference in colour Angry

We bought a paint spray gun for this reason. We've not used it yet though, so I might be eating my words very soon!

Luckily, no coving so I'm crossing my fingers that taping everything off with some decent painters tape and film will do the trick and then I can just cut in afterwards with a small brush.
