Would you rather have an big bathroom instead of an extra bedroom?

I must have missed the TV program where they recommended that family houses need huge bathrooms at the expensive of bedrooms

Every 2nd set of property details I get has 2 beds 2 baths on the first floor instead of 3 beds 1 bath

Am I the only person who doesn't mind small bathrooms?

no I completely agree with you!

claricebeansmum · 11/06/2008 19:03

No - I agree with you,

When we had work done on our house we changed a big bathroom and small bedroom around.

Actually I don't really understand the fascination with huge bedrooms either - you just sleep in them.

ComeOVeneer · 11/06/2008 19:08

As long as it isn't so small that when you lie in the bath your head is right next to the toilet, then no. I do love big bedrooms though. I also sit up in mine and read etc it is my haven not just for sleeping.

If you have a big house fine but extra bedrooms come first. I would prefer not to have 3 bathrooms and a cloakroom as our house has, and have a guest bedroom (because we have had to convert one bedroom into a home office for dh. But we can't convert a bathroom as 2 are ensuite so that would mean ds has to go into someones bedroom at night if he needs the loo, or go down 2 flights of stairs.

lalalonglegs · 11/06/2008 19:20

Bathrooms highly over-rated imo. Bedrooms and storage every time.

QueenMeabhOfConnaught · 11/06/2008 19:24

I think big bathrooms are a terrible waste of space - we rejected a couple of houses because the bathrooms were too big.

barnstaple · 11/06/2008 19:26

I live in a house with a huge bathroom which is spectacular, having come from a flat with a tiny bathroom. I would rather have a smaller bathroom and another bedroom; on the other hand we don't have a spare room for MIL/SFIL to stay in. Such a shame

frogs · 11/06/2008 19:28

When we moved into our house it had five bedrooms and a micro-bathroom (literally -- a half-sized bath, and you could only fit one person in the room at a time). It had a sliding door as there wasn't even room for a proper one.

We did the only thing we could do and turned the back bedroom (in the extension) into a bathroom, so we now have 4 beds and a decent-sized bathroom.

So I think it's all relative -- bathrooms can be too small, particularly in a big family house.

Tinker · 11/06/2008 19:31

What do you think is too small for a bathroom? We want to swap a bedroom and bathroom (well, it's one of our options)

frogs · 11/06/2008 19:32

Too small to fit a full-size bath is too small imo (in a family house, anyway). Too small to have more than one child cleaning their teeth at a time = too small also.

fatzak · 11/06/2008 19:32

When we extended we rushed the plans through and ended up with a huge bathroom plus a decent bedroom. We should have made some of the bedroom into an ensuite for our bedroom and then smaller bathroom and bedroom. Our bathroom is just too big and we really don't need all the space. It's just more floor to clean really

Depend on how many bedrooms you actually need. I would rather have a spare room as we get a lot of visitors, most of whom stay at least a week.

If I had an extra room that was not needed then I would prefer to use that as a study/reading room than have a huge bathroom.

Bathroom should be big enough for a fullsize bath, extra shower and large sink unit, and of course a loo. Don't need it big enough to hold a dance in.

Tinker · 11/06/2008 19:46

God, that sounds quite big KS for "big enough" Have separate shower in current bathrooom and would easily swap for over bath one.

Kindersurprise · 11/06/2008 20:24

We are a bit spoilt here, I guess. And our last house had a double sink unit. That was a bit of a waste tbh, just one extra sink to clean.

I would not go back to over the bath shower. My mum took a cupboard out in the bedroom last year and extended the bathroom. They were able to get an seperate shower in, it is fab.

Aside from anything else, they are thinking ahead to a time where they might not be able to get in and out of the bath so easily.

Jas · 11/06/2008 20:28

We are in the process of getting rid of our huge bathroom, to be replaced with a small but adequate one and a much needed extra bedroom.

Desiderata · 11/06/2008 20:29

I don't know why anyone would covet a big bathroom. How much room do you need to take a dump!

And cleaning tiles is a complete nause. Nope! The smaller the better, imo.

TheBlonde · 11/06/2008 20:32

These are 5-6 bed houses
I would prefer to have my kids sleeping on the same floor as me

No bedroom every time
Owners have been watching too much TV

Have you seen my thread about local agents 'sale'?

ToughDaddy · 11/06/2008 22:35

We are in early stages of refurb. Wanted big dreamy bathroom but practical side kicked in and we decided to add 6th bed (ensuite) instead. More practical. Large living areas is what makes a house in my view.

beansprout · 12/06/2008 08:33

Bedroom every time. Can be used as a study or even storage but a bathroom is a bathroom!

lalalonglegs · 12/06/2008 14:34

Large bathrooms so cold as well plus, as beansprout says, a bathroom is a bathroom whereas a bedroom can be anything you like (apart from a bathroom).

MrsMattie · 12/06/2008 14:38

I'd like big bedrooms and bathrooms, preferably , but if had to choose in this situation, I'd have a small bathroom and extra bedroom.

TheBlonde · 13/06/2008 21:06

I have also recently seen some strange ones with just a free standing bath in the master bedroom - what is that about?

I saw a house with a urinal

basic · 05/05/2009 12:58

urinal!!
I prefer big bedrooms reasonable sized bathroom. Extra only if there is the space and not going into the roof.
