Buyer wants to bring round handyman between exchange and completion

Just this really. We exchanged Thurs before Christmas with completion to take place on 9th Jan. Buyer wants to bring round a "handyman" to see what work they want to do after they move in. Is this normal?

I'm not feeling very generous towards them as they had a late survey and then tried to force us to drop the price by another 20 grand. Can I say that they should wait until after completion?

What’s your issue with that? I think it’s usual to start planning the move/works, I went twice to take measurements when I bought my place so that I can order furniture.

Notmyreality · 28/12/2025 16:46

Just say no sorry we can’t.

FryingPam · 28/12/2025 16:46

Also to say, yes you can refuse, but don’t forget that they can say they want another £k off two minutes before completion

Redrosesposies · 28/12/2025 16:46

It's entirely up to you OP. I wouldn't.

ExitPursuedByABare · 28/12/2025 16:48

Entirely up to you.

Simplestars · 28/12/2025 16:48

No big deal. It will be over soon. Why create the drama.

Well they could try but if you say no and they pull out, then they lose their deposit.

MN2025 · 28/12/2025 16:49

Just say that this is not possible as you are packing up the house ready to move. I’m sure two weeks won’t make a difference for them!! They can hold off…

Namesss · 28/12/2025 16:49

I wonder if this could be their way of trying to drop the price further?

'we found we'll be spending more on the repairs/work than we had initially estimated and need the price reduced to reflect this'

cleo333 · 28/12/2025 16:49

No defo not . We’ve moved recently and our buyers tried to drop us 10 grand at the last knockings . We had to give them two but it left a very dire taste as they were a pain throughout . . Stay firm and do nothing

Moveoverdarlin · 28/12/2025 16:50

Quite normal. I’d say ‘Sure no problem, any time after 4pm next Tuesday or Wednesday works for us.’

Exactly this. I’d encourage them to find all sorts of faults for the badness of it!

HeddaGarbled · 28/12/2025 16:51

Generally, I’d say yes, just to be nice, but if you don’t feel kindly disposed towards them, you don’t have to.

harriethoyle · 28/12/2025 16:51

After exchanging @cleo333 ?

Greekurn · 28/12/2025 16:51

I just feel like I dont trust them now and they could be getting someone round to try and suddenly want another price reduction at the last minute

TheNextStationIs · 28/12/2025 16:54

But you have exchanged - they are committed to paying that price, or dropping out and losing the deposit.

stichguru · 28/12/2025 16:56

I think it's very normal and very not weird. Once they have completed they will presumably want to move asap and will have to fit with a chain of other people moving. If there is stuff they know they want to do as soon as they move, maybe before they move all their furniture into place, then of course they want to be ready to have work done asap.

strangeandfamiliar · 28/12/2025 16:57

Price reductions aren't usually possible after exchange. The price agreed is binding once contracts are exchanged.

MiniCoopers · 28/12/2025 17:00

You’ve exchanged and monies will be sitting in your Solicitors client account or will be applied for by your solicitors, there won’t be any changes in the price now as they are fixed by signed contracts. I’d tell them unfortunately you are busy.

GU24Mum · 28/12/2025 17:06

I’d try and accommodate them as they can’t drop the price now and it might help them be more helpful when post for you inevitably ends up at the old house even with a redirection. Not saying I’d cancel lots of plans for then but I’d offer a small number of sensible times.

WallaceinAnderland · 28/12/2025 17:08

Just say it's not convenient. There's nothing they can do about it.

muddyford · 28/12/2025 17:10

I came here for a quick look at a couple of things. Previous house was empty and I was allowed in to hoover through!

hollytheheroic · 28/12/2025 17:12

They've exchanged so the price is fixed. I think this is fine but of course you don't have to.

Kwamitiki · 28/12/2025 17:14

They can say it,but they are legally obligated to pay the price agreed at exchange or lose their deposit if they pull out. If they have a mortgage, it would be nigh on impossible to chang at this point.

TangoWhiskeyAlphaTango123 · 28/12/2025 17:17

I would say no, they can wait a few more days and then the house is theirs to do what they want with. You have already exchanged so are in a very secure position.
