Where would you put the Christmas tree in this room? With diagram!

First year living in this home. Small Victorian terrace, 2 up 2 down. Open plan living area, door straight off the street. Limited space. Would you move the armchair and put the tree there, or somewhere else?

Could you move the armchair?

Loveduppenguin · 28/11/2025 09:57

Depending on where the power outlets are, I would move the chair in front of the window and put the tree where the chair is or I would just put the tree in front of the window.

marathonmumm · 28/11/2025 10:09

the diagram makes it look roomier than it is I think. If I place the tree in front of the window it sort of makes the armchair unusable. Although it would seem like the obvious place.

Yes there are plugs along that window wall

Maybe get a small tree that could go on top of the sideboard?

Flustration · 28/11/2025 10:13

Can the sideboard be moved? Moving it to either the same wall as the kitchen door or behind the sofa (if access permits) would give you some clear space on the long wall for the tree.

mynameiscalypso · 28/11/2025 10:14

I’d probably move the arm chair myself.

Prelim · 28/11/2025 10:17

Move the sideboard to the kitchen wall and the table more into the centre of the room. Put the tree where the sideboard is.

marathonmumm · 28/11/2025 10:19

Sideboard can’t be moved to kitchen wall - I forgot to draw in a window along that wall

We don't have a tree up every year (we have to juggle furniture if we do).

Some years I put the christmas lights along the picture rail and then hang baubles from them.

Or you can do things with tension rods, lights and baubles across a window, if you have a deep enough recess.

So a tree isn't compulsory - can look very festive without one!

GasPanic · 28/11/2025 10:27

Since you don't want to block line of sight to your TV with an enormous tree, if you don't indicate where your TV is then it is hard to help.

Notsoblackfriday · 28/11/2025 10:29

We had half tree when we lived in small apartment. It was great for small space! Maybe thet could be solution and it could go next to sideboard to be cwntral to the space a bit

CoolFineDoneWicked · 28/11/2025 10:34

When I had a living room like this I used to get a small tree and put it on a side table next to the armchair. That's probably the best option - between the armchair and the window.

Tardigrade001 · 28/11/2025 10:39

In one of the two corners - either move the armchair, or move the table a bit and put it in front of the shelves (if possible). Or a smaller tree/pine branches in a vase on the sideboard.

MrsPatmore · 28/11/2025 10:39

Not for Xmas but there are a few 2 up 2 downs near to where I live. A lot of people put the tv on the wall to free up floor space. In your position, I’d put it where the armchair is or get a smaller novelty tree for the sideboard and then lots of decoration/lights around the walls.

AnSolas · 28/11/2025 10:41

Have you looked at a quarter/half tree in the corner along the kitchen wall

Move the shelf fully into the corner or strip the books/stuff off and store away in boxes. [(Edit) then add christmas stuff to tone into the tree]

With a full tree
Get any type of floor weight for a counter balance tie a string to the tree at least half way up.

Zip tie the closed branches (you dont need to open) to the back of the tree ( or cut them off )

Fluff and decorate the rest as normal.

Or some places now sell quarter/half trees

LibertyLily · 28/11/2025 10:51

Back in the early noughties, a family member living in a similarly small home had a half tree. I guess these are still available, so I'd look for something like that @marathonmumm.

Don’t put it in front of the window it’s depressing having the light blocked. In front of the shelves in the corner is my vote.

Misanthropologie · 28/11/2025 11:05

Can you move the second set of shelves to another room for the duration? Or you could go for a half-tree and hang it on the wall behind the dining table.

Fifthtimelucky · 28/11/2025 11:13

Do you use the fireplace? If not, I’d be tempted to put a small tree in front of it.

And is there a radiator anyway? If so, where? If you’re having a real tree, you don’t want it too close to the radiator.

marathonmumm · 28/11/2025 13:31

Right, thank you, I think I’m going to move the armchair and put the tree in that corner. The TV is above the fireplace for the person who asked. I might need to squeeze the arm chair in the open space in front of the sideboard (in the corner if the lounge “zone”. I also like the idea of pinning up branches towards the back so that I can squeeze it further back.

Presumably the window you forgot looks out onto a yard and is beside the shelves? Put the tree in front of that window

longtompot · 28/11/2025 16:35

Could it go behind the sofa, closer to the stairs?

Or can the table be moved closer to the sofa and have it in front of the shelves?

Or can the sofa be moved further back and it go in front of the living room window?

Or can it go in front of the sideboard?

I'd love to have ours in front of the window, but it goes in a corner next to a doorway. The base is a bit too wide so the back branches don't get folded down so I can squeeze it in there and we can still walk past without taking it or a decoration with us
