First year living in this home. Small Victorian terrace, 2 up 2 down. Open plan living area, door straight off the street. Limited space. Would you move the armchair and put the tree there, or somewhere else?

Christmas trees look good in corners. I would probably put it in the right hand corner where it says "shelves." The dining table will need to be moved closer to the sofa to allow enough room.

Or get a table top tree and put it on top of the sideboard.

What about somewhere in the hallway? If not, under the window, sized to fit.

Sideboard can’t be moved to kitchen wall - I forgot to draw in a window along that wall

Wouldn’t it fit under the window, or is it too tall?

gypsy22 · 28/11/2025 17:54

Yes .. where is the tv as that’s critical to the sofa position .. !

gypsy22 · 28/11/2025 17:56

buy a slim tree rather than a really big bushy one .. there are different types of trees .. don’t go mad size wise .. just buy it and you will work it out when you actually have it in situ !

1st thought was move the armchair, but I'm not sure how well a real tree would go next to the heat of a fireplace?

When we lived in a small flat, we had a half tree like this https://www.argos.co.uk/product/5426304?deeplink=true&gclsrc=aw.ds&&_$ja=tsid:11675|acid:169-582-1252|cid:6883536360|agid:189889956191|tid:kwd-499297801832|crid:779323581333|nw:g|rnd:3803661550597108156|dvc:c|adp:|mt:b|loc:9045062&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=6883536360&utm_term=argos%202%20for%2020&utm_content=text&utm_custom1=189889956191&utm_custom2=169-582-1252&cmpid=GG05X&GPDP=true&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=6883536360&gbraid=0AAAAAD9II9ld3ZNO_2R0uE7c6mnvWv6JX&gclid=CjwKCAiAraXJBhBJEiwAjz7MZXuEDCFy-sDuJfTlsGnHWH1ciI8ryBJgxbU8MLrhvPoMDnxAaMNMQBoCcF8QAvD_BwE

Sorry the link is massive! 😬 Its a half tree if you cut from top to bottom, not cutting the stem in half if that makes sense? In a corner, it takes up much less floor space and no one would ever know its not a full tree. I too wouldnt get it too close to the fire, but its an option if you don't already have a tree.

Lotsofthings · 28/11/2025 18:27

Tree next to fireplace will look lovely. Some tree even real ones are slimmer than others. Arm chair can go in front of window as presumably you’ll want extra seating for visitors. It’s dark early so won’t exactly be blocking light.

CuttingBackSomeMore · 28/11/2025 18:39

If you rotate the sofa 90 degrees clockwise so that the side where you wrote 'sofa' runs under the window, then as you suggest, put the Xmas tree in the armchair corner and the chair by the sideboard, would that make the room feel less crowded just for Xmas?

angela1952 · 28/11/2025 20:21

I'd turn the table round and put the tree to the left of the bottom of the stairs.

opencecilgee · 29/11/2025 07:14

In the corner. Move the chair
yes the room will be cramped for afew
weeks. Ours is every Christmas

Soontobe60 · 29/11/2025 07:22

Have you got a real tree or fake? We succumbed to a fake tree some years ago that has separate branches. When we moved to a smaller house, we just didn’t put the branches round the back so in effect the tree fits much further into the corner. We also don’t put the bottom branches in so it doesn’t stick out as much.

Caspianberg · 29/11/2025 07:26

Cannot go where that small coffee table is by front door?

otherwise I would get small ones on pots and put one on sideboard, or coffee table etc. it’s what I do in our holiday let as it saves space. Plus other festive decor like a poinsettia plant, lights

marathonmumm · 29/11/2025 08:05

To answer questions, as I said the tv is above the fireplace. The fireplace isn’t a working one so no issue with heat. We don't have a hallway. The shelves on the far right corner contain all my DC toys etc and get used daily so putting it over there would be a hassle. Also I like to sit and look at it from the living room.

Am going to go with moving the armchair and putting tree in left hand corner! Thank you!

Would you be better with a wall tree instead?

rightoguvnor · 29/11/2025 13:24

I’d have shuffled the shelves and sideboard along towards the back and put it in between the fireplace and the sideboard so it’s central to the two zones.

Chasingsquirrels · 29/11/2025 14:17

It is real or fake?
I use to leave some of the back branches off my fake tree so it would fit in to the corner better.

lilkitten · 29/11/2025 14:36

Sounds like you have a good plan moving the armchair. We have a small living room in a terraced house, with three corners taken up with doors! We put it in front of the remaining corner, but have to move the desk out of there and into my bedroom for a month. Also have to remove the coffee table and replace it with a fold up table for Christmas dinner, it's annoying in small houses with no room to move things to - coffee table may have to sit in the kitchen for a bit

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 29/11/2025 16:16

Could you shift the sideboard along the wall towards the shelves in the dining area and fit the armchair in between the sideboard and the fireplace?
