My kitchen is painted pink.

Rustoleum cupboard paint. Emergency when i moved into a house where everything was gross and had to revamp on a zero-ish budget. I love it.

How are people changing handles if they change the kitchen colour? I can't find any new bar handles for the drawers in the same size (240mm hole width in brass) and I don't want to make new holes in all the drawers as it will be very visible where they have been filled.

Drilled, filling really wasn't too bad. Overfill and sand down.

Can you see where it has been filled and painted over or is it invisible unless you’re looking very very very closely and know it’s there?

Invisible with overfilling and sanding. When I didn't overfill it's barely visible but you can certainly feel it!

I did mine. Two coats of zinser bin primer and two coats of farrow and ball estate satin. I changed the handles filled and sanded you couldn’t see anything.
Here’s a before and after. I painted the wooden door afterward too. I obviously changed the floor too.

@cleo333 Here's a few pics of our current kitchen.

Firstly, the kitchen (white painted wood, fitted mid 1960s) we 'inherited' when we bought our cottage last year.

Next, same kitchen after a temporary glow up.

Then we decided to relocate the kitchen to the old living room and purchased the additional green painted cabinets on eBay.

I'm in the process of painting all the base cabinets with the same paint I used for the temporary fix (Edward Bulmer Pompadour) and the wall cupboard/plate rack in EB Nicaragua eggshell. So the finished kitchen will be a mix of the old and new-to-us.

Obviously, it's not yet complete - the range cooker (reconditioned Lacanche) went in the gap between the two sets of pan drawers this week. The open unit will eventually house pull out bins one side. And there's infill 'units' to put in (DH making these ) which will house cook books and trays. Then it's just worktops, cooker hood and tap!

Spent ages doing it. I’d watched all the videos, read all the blogs and followed all the steps. It looked brilliant but after two years there was noticeable wear around some handles. Easy enough to repaint a patch, but then it was a constant job, dabbing at another bit and another bit, nearly every weekend.

When we changed kitchen we chose painted wood and 5 years on its still absolutely pristine. They used 2 pack paint (acryllic mixed with a hardener) which I hadn’t heard of before (so much for all my research) and if I were insane enough to do it again, that’s what I’d use.

I'm in the process of getting quotes to have mine painted which are in the region of £2.5k in London vs £3.5k to buy new doors + cost of fitter.

I searched mumsnet and whilst some people say they painted their kitchen and it looks great a much larger proportion said it was VERY hard work hence why I'm going down the paid route!

Bloody hell, £2.5k to paint? I got all new doors and drawer fronts and side panels for £700. I'd be finding another company because that's a rip off for painting

I got 5 quotes and £2.5k were the two cheapest!

To buy new doors of the same quality is coming up £3.5k on diykitchens + a carpenter to cut the plinth, pelmet and change the island panels as that would need re-glueing.

Look on doorfinder.co.uk. you put in the measurements of the doors and drawers and side panels and they do plinths as well. Depending on how big your kitchen is you might find it cheaper. The wood is really good quality. They do a good few different styles and colours too

I’ve done a few. My top tip would be to suck up the inconvenience and use oil based paint (little Greene). It smells and takes longer to dry but for durability it is so worth it.

roses2 · 12/11/2025 12:46

I've booked my kitchen respray in and really excited! It's a national company that came back with a very competitive cost (I got 6 quotes) and if they are good I will post back details here.

These guys spray onsite. For anyone that has had a company come in before - do you need to empty every single cabinet? How dusty is the work?

@Sasssquatch Did you paint in situ or remove the doors?

We've had ours painted and were really disappointed with how long the results lasted. I don't think they were prepped very well. So I'm considering doing them myself but we have multiple animals and a lot of kitchen and utility cupboards [circa 30] so I need to get it right first time.

Vermin · 12/11/2025 15:18

I had it done professionally and it was worth every penny of the £2k. End panels were painted in place, anything removable was removed and sprayed in a workshop. The finish is flawless and it’s extended the life of a £40k (20 year old) kitchen brilliantly. The cheap and cheerful b&q cupboard doors in the utility room did not take the spraying quite as well (or maybe they’re just aging more because they’re cheap and cheerful)

TheFairyCaravan · 12/11/2025 15:29

I had mine sprayed by a company and looks amazing. Our kitchen was quite new, we bought a newish build, but not to my taste but I couldn’t justify ripping it out. It’s lasting really well and hasn’t marked at all.

roses2 · 12/11/2025 15:57

@Vermin @TheFairyCaravan did you have to empty out every single cupboard in order to have the doors sprayed? Or was it reasonably dust free?

Vermin · 12/11/2025 16:06

No emptying at all - they put up plastic covers and the actual spraying happened off site in a workshop

Thank you - what about the pelmet and coving etc that goes around the cupboards? These are attached with screws. Did they remove these also?

DH is panicking about dust and has told me we need to clear out the entire kitchen!

The first time I did our current kitchen I did it in situ.

The most recent time I’ve set up a bit of a production line taking off 3 doors / drawer fronts at a time. Laying them out on the dining table and doing a coat each time I pass, flip over when dry, do a coat on the other side. It’s made it much easier to manage but has of course taken longer.

TheSilentSister · 15/11/2025 01:31

I had a company replace cupboard doors and work surfaces but there were some areas that were not included. I took a piece of off-cut to B&Q and they did their paint match. No one can tell the difference. It was so easy to do. The area is over the hob and gets splattered with grease etc but it still looks fresh as the day I did it. It's so good I almost wish I'd just replaced the doors myself with basic ones and painted them too.
