Hi .
I need to buy TRV for my mums radiators.

She is having a power flush this week .

I was hoping the plumber could add them .
I would give him extra .

But how do I know if I need to buy the ones with all the side valves ..or just the top knob .

There are no temperature valves on there at the moment.

Thank you.

Drayton are a good robust make. I would buy the whole valve if you are having a power flush but I am not a plumber so someone else might be able to give better advice @gaspanic, @Pigletjohn

Not sure exactly what you mean but the valves will usually come in a dual pack. You’ll have the trv which is the thing with the adjustable dial and then you’ll have a much more basic looking valve for the second. Usually trv will go flow side and other one return but often they can be put on either side. What do you mean with all the side valves? You’ll can get angled, corner or straight valves depending on the installation requirements if that’s what you mean? I’d suggest taking a picture to your local plumbers merchant if unsure and they will tell you.

You should really let the plumber recommend and supply. You will pay retail anyway - and he can make a little extra. I hope you have told him that work is also required. It wouldn't be fair to drop it on him on the day without him being aware. He won't just have 1 job on and you might cause problems for his day if he doesn't make the extra time for it.

Thank you for your replies.

BG man came to give quote for mum radiators to be power flushed.

I asked about the TRV.

He looked on the Amazon site and said any of them would be fine .

But some of them are just the tops I think and others are the whole pipe attachments.

If there is no TVR on at the moment..do I need the whole thing with valves coming out of it ?

Which one of these ?

The answer to your question is do you need to replace the valve and the pipe or just the valve? The trv can be replaced in isolation to the rest of it but give it’s a pound difference I’d just get the whole lot and then your plumber can tell you what you need.

Geneticsbunny · 10/10/2025 20:52

The top bits sometimes seize up or fail and need replacing seperately.

PigletJohn · 10/10/2025 22:02

Photograph your existing valves, and the pipes going into them please. Both ends.

You want something much the same.

I find it odd that your installer did not seem to suggest supplying and installing them.

bizzey · 10/10/2025 22:40

To be fair to the man that came...

He was a BG estimate quote guy.

He said he wasn't an expert.

I think to be on the safe side I will get the sets with all the valves.

BG man said any of them .

He didn't say whether I needed valves or not !

But radiators do not have valves at the moment.

So I am thinking...the whole job lot of the valve things as well ?

Power flushing is a bit of a grift if I recall correctly. Do the radiators have a dome shaped cold spot at the bottom?

bizzey · 10/10/2025 23:07

@Summerhillsquare the power flush has been recommended for a few years now !

Ven with independent engineer for quote.

Mum likes her sitting room hot (!!)

But the bedrooms do not need to be that hot as no one is in them .

(Downstairs toilet really does not need to be heated to 25 c !!)

So looks like I need the the full valve package for the radiators ?

Email MN (or report your post) to ask why your pictures aren't showing. Sometimes they miss approving them.

It's not the approving part that is the problem.

When I click on what photo to send ...it just keeps doing the loading bit.
The little circle just keeps going around.

Normal size photo I think , like I normally take .

PigletJohn · 12/10/2025 13:28

Try some other pictures, of different size.
