you can get slightly taller versions of the one you linked for shoes. I think it would be too shallow for coats.

how deep are you thinking? And do you want cupboard type doors for coats (as oppose to the flip down ones)?

Theyreeatingthedogs · 27/09/2025 17:41

You could fit one of those IKEA ones, put a white backboard above it and attach coat hooks. If you want the coats hidden and folded up, cut the legs of a second unit and fit above the first one.

cluelessinteriors · 27/09/2025 17:54

@OneCyanHiker 20cm depth would be ideal due to the narrow space. I'd like a cabinet with shoe storage drawers at the bottom and then cupboard-type doors for the coats above.

PP - Yes, ideally I'd like coat storage hidden.

Something like this (but with shoe storage draws at the bottom and not see-through at the top) and extremely narrow.

Those hemnes shoe racks are very shallow and only take a few pairs of shoes. What you're asking for is essentially a shallow wardrobe. I think the shallowest Pax is 35cm deep. Billy with doors is 30cm but would need some adaptation to take coat hooks

cluelessinteriors · 27/09/2025 17:58

Thanks @PickAChew - an extended Ikea Hemnes-style cabinet would be great but I haven't come across anything that's exactly what I'm looking for. I'd like to hide all clutter and not keen on a coat rack.

I think you need a carpenter.

I think you need a carpenter.

My friend had a carpenter build hers

cluelessinteriors · 27/09/2025 18:30

@RosesAndHellebores I think so too! 😭

Get a Billy bookcase and add doors. Attach a rail towards the back and hang hooks on the rail. Use the shelves for shoes.

There are quite a few IKEA Hacks on FB and Instagram, they might have a solution?

PickAChew · 27/09/2025 19:51

cluelessinteriors · 27/09/2025 18:53

@BettyTurpinPies thanks for the suggestion! Do you mean buy it for the door frame and then cut it down to a bespoke size? Do you think it'd be possible to hack it so the cupboard bit is on the top?

You can get full height doors for them.

cluelessinteriors · 27/09/2025 19:56

Thank you @PickAChew - this would be ideal!

30cm Billy is not deep enough for men's shoes

OhDear111 · 27/09/2025 21:49

How can 20 cm store shoes? Dc ones but adult ones? Coats? How? Folded up? This is about the depth of a bookcase. Just buy a bookcase and add baskets! Job done.

PickAChew · 27/09/2025 21:54

Big shoes can go in sideways.

AmpleLilacQuail · 27/09/2025 21:57

Definitely try a Pax - they have a narrower 38cm option which might be more suitable. Taskrabbit built mine in about an hour but I see lots on social media making them built in if you’re good at DIY.

MeganM3 · 27/09/2025 21:59

How many coats would you be expecting to get in the space?

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 27/09/2025 22:00

this might be too deep

OhDear111 · 27/09/2025 23:33

@PickAChew And coats? It’s very shallow storage!

limetrees32 · 28/09/2025 08:25

This pax which is 38cm deep might do shoes .looks like the shelves slant up.

Does this item of furniture exist?
cluelessinteriors · 28/09/2025 08:52

Thanks everyone!

The Hemnes 4 drawer shoe cabinet is 22cm deep - this would be ideal. I was hoping for an extended version of that.

I don't have many coats and jackets - probably five in total.

I would store shoes and coats I don't use regularly elsewhere. The hallway storage would be for a few items that I use the most, plus for when guests come over.

If I can't do some kind of hack, I may have to bite the bullet and get the Hemnes shoe cabinet for the hallway and then have a coat rack in the living room. I think coat racks can look quite messy though!

I live alone in a one bed Victorian flat with no cupboards (although I have two wardrobes in alcoves in the bedroom).

BettyTurpinPies · 28/09/2025 11:56

@cluelessinteriors , I meant the full height Billy, with full-size Oxberg doors. One shelf, I think is fixed, but you could rearrange the others to suit.

Agree with others that 22 cm is probably too shallow. A size 5 foot is 25 cm long, and the shoes will be longer.
The shoe cupboard you linked won't hold much.
