I appreciate it’s hard to see but all I can think is it might be terrazzo? But I don’t think that was what was usually in these houses back then was it?

Could be terrazzo. Terrazzo was quite popular for areas like corridors and kitchens in pre-war housing (and other buildings - you still still see it quite often in unmodernised schools, municipal buildings, hospital wings etc of that era) due to being relatively inexpensive, practical and hardwearing. The rest of the hallway decor looks fairly dated, so not a huge stretch to think they may have kept the original flooring.

jimmyeatworld · 09/09/2025 22:06

Ahhh, thank you. It’s not like the tiles you get now, it’s full on stone and must be a nightmare to clean. Yes nothing was changed in the house so has all its original features. I’m just trying to figure out what period the house was built in

Please post some photos showing the floor itself, especially round the edges and doorways, and in the cupboard under the stairs.

Here's one I took earlier. House built 1910. I do not live there now.

Old terrazzo is usually fairly easy to mop unless it’s become cracked or chipped, and you can have it grinded, polished and resealed to get the original effect back (at some cost and mess!)

The deeds on the Land Registry will usually give you detail of when the property was built; though if it’s a house you’re interested in buying, the owners will almost certainly know.

It looks like terrazzo
It was cast in place and was very popular in the early 20th century ( 1920s onwards )

Given what you’ve shown. The hallway layout and door I’d say 1920/30

Beautiful

jimmyeatworld · 10/09/2025 06:21

Thank you. I will get close up picture the next time I visit. The cupboard under the stairs has those red tiles.

AI tells me these houses on this particular road were built between 1800-1911

It looks like terrazzo to me. We had terrazzo flooring in the kitchen of our terraced house. It was very hard-wearing and easy to clean, but cold and unforgiving if you dropped anything.

We have toddlers so a little worried about their heads !
Was it the stone kind you had ?

Yes. It could also be very slippery when wet (which would happen often in a hallway) so you'd be right to be a bit concerned.

It is a matte finish atm because it’s old

I don’t want to cover it up though. The house has all its original features and it would be a crime to change it

We have terrazzo in our porch. The house is Edwardian. Once we've finished the big jobs in the house, I'd like to get it refinished. It's possible the terrazzo is under the flooring in the vestibule too, but we don't know without ripping it up. You could put runners down with underlay that grips smooth floors until the kids are older. It's not a nightmare to clean at all. Once it's been refinished it should look amazing.

What years would Edwardian be ?
The house has the Tudor frontage with the dormer style windows so I did initially think 30’s but the terrazzo threw me !

Yes a runner is a good idea.

Edwardian = during the reign of Edward VII. 1901 - 1910.

jimmyeatworld · 10/09/2025 07:04

Could something like this work ? And also to bring it up the stairs and landing providing the floorboards are okay?

Would Edwardian houses have that faux Tudor frontage ?

OP posts:
Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 10/09/2025 07:05

From your description it sounds like vernacular Edwardian design. Use of wood and render. Even the dormers, depending on the design although they may be later additions.

The house i was brought up in ( built 1908) had a beautiful circular hall with a galleried landing and a terrazzo floor.
It was brilliant for roller skating round!

jimmyeatworld · 10/09/2025 07:12

This is the house we’re buying. What period does it look? Sorry I’m rubbish at this sort of stuff I just want to do the house justice when we renovate and keep it within the style

Beautiful house!
I'd say it was around 1910ish ( no expert) especially looking at the roof lines and angles.
