Is a 6’6” by 8’ 3” a big enough to be considered a bedroom?

I think it’s a fairly good sized box room with enough room for a double bed and a small chest of drawers.

Thoughts?

Where does one find these guidelines and who came up with them?

They’ve been around since maybe the 70s
They are on Gov.uk website

If there is a radiator at the short end, can you still fit a bed in?
I couldn’t and had to buy a short bed.

Mosaic123 · 27/08/2025 19:06

It's fine for a guest room.

You could look for a very shallow chest of drawers or perhaps some kind of tall locker with a drawer for hanging clothes on to maximise floor space.

That’s interesting re the rule of thumb. I’ve just looked at the floor plans for some new builds near us. They’re c.£600k 4 beds and none have a bedroom that’s 12m2

it’s funny how expectations, using the above post about a double bed being considered more like a large single nowadays, are contrary to what you actually get in a new build.

even this house as an example, it is an 80s build. A shade under £800k and only one of the bedrooms is barely 12m2

If you look at bed shops they keep adding bigger beds as people want space.

used to be single, double and king. Then they added super king, then emperor. Now they have super emperor or large emperor although they get a bit mixed up.

Some place refer to emperor as 6’6” x 6’6” which is what I have. Others it’s 7’ x7’.

there is another thread on here atm where people are complaining about Airbnb’s only having standard doubles. People are so much taller and have wide arm span. A 6’2” man (let alone anyone taller) can’t stretch out in anything shorter than a king as no one sleeps with their head up against the headboard.

My son has a small guest room and they’ve bought a small double. I was worried about sleeping in it tbh as we’re used to a king size but it was fine-far nicer than a sofa bed. The width is 120. His bedroom is 11 by 8 ft and a standard double would swamp the room.

"Double bed" is one of the ridicolous lies people acceped. It is not double. Super king is the actual double.
I always wondered how did this happen. Such ablatant lie 😁 I am from central europe and the "double" is called "one and half" bed.
Sorry for bed rant. But yes, actually curious who marketed the lie so well😁

To the bedroom size is 2x2.5m? That is tight but if you use smart storage it could make nice guest room. While the idea of raised bed with under storage is grand normally, you should consider who will be staying there (e.g. guest with some mobility issues). You could put smaller bed and in one corner a shallow 40cm but tall as you can wardrobe. Depends hpw you position bed, MAYBEyou could have a under drawer. It won't be much for chilling there, but it will do for basics.

It would be used as a guest room & it would need a double bed as the guests are a couple.
There are three bedroom houses for sale near us for £500k+ with a third bedroom that is 5’8” by 7’. The estate agent commented that she lived in a similar sized room until she was 19 when commented the room was too small to be used as a bedroom.

Me too, until I went to uni - sold in 2016 for £330,000. Oddly enough, the back bedroom was a decent size but my mother was a hoarder so it was too full of junk!

Sadcafe · 27/08/2025 19:48

Estate agents would certainly class it as a bedroom as would many builders of new houses

CheeseWisely · 27/08/2025 20:01

Our bedroom is slightly bigger at 10’ by 8’ foot and is our permanent bedroom (or would be if we weren’t about to move). We have a standard double, a decent sized built in wardrobe, a tall boy and have had a dressing table, now replaced with a space saver cot. We push the bed against the wall by choice to give a bit more space for dressing, but in the past have had it moved out with enough space to walk down the far side. I think it’ll work for an occasional use guest room. Are the guests particularly large people? You might get away with a small double even if they’re not staying long and aren’t especially tall or wide.

CheeseWisely · 27/08/2025 20:15

In fact the place we’re moving to has a bedroom 6’6’’ by 6’9’’ and the current owners have a double bed and a chest of drawers in it. It has a double wardrobe sized closet that isn’t included in those measurements. We plan to use it for DS’s room with a single bed, probably a high sleeper when he’s older. He’ll have a separate playroom so won’t need toys in there.

superking · 27/08/2025 20:22

If being used as a full-time bedroom I'd put a high/ mid-sleeper single bed in so you could put furniture underneath it and still have usable floor space. As it's to be used by occasional guests I'd get an IKEA Hemnes daybed which is attractive and sturdy as a single bed/ daybed but pulls out into a good sized double and has storage underneath.

TizerorFizz · 27/08/2025 23:13

This size of room is the one above the hall in a semi. It’s a single bedroom. Not a double. If you can get a double in, there’s no floor space for anything else so where do you think guests will put clothes?

TizerorFizz · 27/08/2025 23:21

@Ringdoorbell2 This is interesting. The whole room is the bed! Storage outside and obviously the door is removed.

Reminds me of Mediaeval box beds.

mondaytosunday · 27/08/2025 23:53

Yes. My 5’11” by 7’ office was listed as a bedroom. If you put an actual bed in it you’d barely be able to open the door.

Rollercoaster1920 · 28/08/2025 08:05

A single bed is 2m X 90cm.
An IKEA pax wardrobe is 1m X 60cm (but you can get the half / narrow 50x60cm).
We have a 2m X 3m room, it's just big enough to be a single bedroom with the above furniture.
A 135cm double would technically fit, but would be squashed up against the wall, and would feel too crowded. It would be under the window / across the radiator.

Bearhunt468 · 28/08/2025 08:21

We did exactly that with a 8,8 x 6,11 room for a small guest room. It worked absolutely fine as guest had room to put drinks down, bedside lamp etc. little hooks on back of door meant they could hang any clothes too like jumpers. Yes they had to climb over each other but it was one or two nights max. Your layout might allow for the bed to have a gap either side. I also got a bedframe that meant I could buy long plastic drawers to slide under for extra storage for us too.

Does the door open in or out? Ours opens onto the landing.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 28/08/2025 08:28

My spare room is 2.00 x 2.06m. I can’t get a double bed in but it’s fine with a single. It has a small chest of drawers, a built in wardrobe and a tiny folding table and chair. Works perfectly well as a bedroom.

TizerorFizz · 28/08/2025 08:29

It depends where the door is. Does it open inwards? That is why you can fill the room with a bed - or not. It’s obviously a bedroom as a single bed will fit as it’s 7 ft wide. It’s just whether the door is an issue for a double bed and where any storage might be. Under the bed is possible and you can get a small wall mounted rail for hanging.

bruffin · 28/08/2025 08:32

My dds room is that size,
She has a single bed across the back wall with fitted cupboards above and lighting. There is a 3 door fitted wardrobe, a desk with a pedistal, chest of drawers and a bookcase. The fitted furniture wasnt cheap but well designed to fit the space.

autienotnaughty · 28/08/2025 08:57

I’d get a small double bed or sofa bed/futon so the room canbe multi purpose

chunkybear · 28/08/2025 09:05

ZiggyZowie · 27/08/2025 15:37

We had a room this size and my DH built a bed up high with wardrobe and desk space underneath

Exactly my thoughts too - think volume rather than floor space

TizerorFizz · 28/08/2025 15:09

@ZiggyZowie Elderly guests would not want this though! Ok for children but this is a guest room. So a standard bed makes more sense and storage under.
