Matching bathrooms?

SunnySideDeepDown · 30/07/2025 20:21

I need a little insight please! I’ll soon be renovating two family upstairs bathrooms at the same time and wondering whether to do the same colour floor and wall tiles in both or whether to make the rooms look completely different?

What would you do?

Either way I will be getting different colour vanities and layout of products is different.

Would love to hear what you’d do!

I would do them differently

DongDingBell · 30/07/2025 20:32

We didn't do the replacement, but we have am ensuite and a bathroom that we're clearly don't at the same point in time. They have the same (neutral) wall tiles, but nothing else is the same.

I think if it was something neutral, you are fine to do the same. If it is something that will standout (say pink vanity or Moroccan tiles for example) it would probably be better not to be identical.

SunnySideDeepDown · 30/07/2025 21:02

I think you’re right, I’m just really struggling to find a second design I like… back to the drawing board!

Id stick with neutral floor, tiles, loo, sink, fittings etc. Something classic as you dont want to change them all the time. I'd go different on paint, lights, window finishes, towels.etc.
This would make it easier to choose the permanent stuff and give you the chance to play with the overall look.

Advocodo · 31/07/2025 08:41

If it’s easier then I think doing them both the same will look fine. You can always change colour of towels etc to make them look slightly different. Perhaps don’t overthink it! I am so guilty of this.

SunnySideDeepDown · 31/07/2025 08:44

@Seaside3 this is really helpful, thanks! I plan to half tile the walls so I can have art work that picks up on the colours of the different vanities. And the same neutral floor. I’m just not sure about the wall tiles…. Do I go cool toned on one and warm on the other? Or stick to the same tiling and, like you say, just mix up the towels, mats, art and sinks… hmm.

I would go with something that won't date, I less you have the finances / willingness to regularly update. Or, if the rest of your house is eclectic, then go for something classic. I always stick to this rule as I cant afford or be bothered to change the fixtures regularly. I dont mind painting regularly if the whim takes me though.

Oh yes, i’m a major overthinker!

Is there a problem with them matching if that's the style you like? Absolutely no need to match but no reason I can think of that matching would be a problem. Most people will only be seeing one room at a time!

For our bathrooms we used the same terrazzo on the floor and brushed metals. For the bigger family bathroom, we used white kit-kit tiles (yes, lots of grouting, but I love it!) and painted some walls terracotta. For the second smaller bathroom, we will go for sage green tiles - almost like metro style - and a neutral/paint on the top part of wall. So the bathrooms have similar elements but are totally different at the same time.

Oh and the vanities are both oak, but different models. So again, same elements but very different just changing the colour of the accent tiles in the wet area and the paint

I have just renovated my house and did two bathrooms and did 2 completely different looks. One that is the main bathroom guests use is traditional in colour and style. The en-suite is sleek and modern and spa like. I am glad I did it differently for both.

Londonmummy66 · 31/07/2025 15:49

I've just done two bathrooms, one with a walk in shower and one with a roll top bath. Both have the same grey slate effect floor tiles and white metro tiles with white paint. However they look quite different as one has a black critall style shower screen and black wire shelving and the other has vintage/shabby chic styling, Both work but look very different despite the identical tiles.

Kitchenbattle · 31/07/2025 17:06

I have just done mine, I did two with the same tile but one is only half tiled and I’ll paint it and then another in a similar tile but grey. All very neutral because I am just that way, I can’t do mad patterns or colours.

the photos below were when they were just done, the mirrors were added in after (see the last two pics) still have to paint the main bathroom.

@Kitchenbattle they look great. Do you mind me asking where you got the bathroom fixtures from?

The units? They are a brand called R T large. The showers and doors from a local supplier…and the toilet was already in the house when we purchased.

Different! It’s not a hotel! Use your imagination.

Why half tile walls? Very expensive! Can be ugly on top edge too. We have used painted boarding and it’s lovely. Practical and smart. Use tiles in shower but half tiling is so difficult for heated towel rads and full height cupboards for towel storage. So consider what you want in the bathrooms.

With respect, they’re just your opinions. Half tile is a great option to add personality. I add art and shelves that I couldn’t otherwise add onto tile (well, I could but it wouldn’t look right in my eyes). Why is half tile more expensive? It’s have the cost as we’re having the walls and ceiling plastered anyway so it’s less tile cost.

We’ve renovated 3 bathrooms before, all half tiled, except for shower areas of course.

The top edge can be left raw and painted the wall colour for a soft look or use matching trim for a neater look. It’s not ugly at all.

Half tiling isn’t difficult for radiators, they come with adjustable fixings to account for different distances from walls. But we’re going for 80cm tall radiators that fit on the tile so literally not a problem.

Were having stand alone storage that’s more attractive and larger for towels.

Thanks for your input though.

We’ve decided to go with same wall and floor tiles, different colour and size of vanities, different mirrors, different art. Hopefully it’ll be cohesive but different!

TizerorFizz · 06/08/2025 12:56

Who wants art in a bathroom? You absolutely can put cupboards onto walks that are tiled. I didn’t say full tiling is cheaper. Half tiles are rarely used in more expensive properties these days and shelves? Why? Get a storage cupboard above the sink or a tall wall hung cupboard. With two different wall thicknesses it’s difficult to mount towel rads too. It’s just what’s easier to kit out and what’s chic and modern.

@TizerorFizz lots of people put pics or art in a bathroom…

TizerorFizz · 06/08/2025 19:43

Not smart ones I’ve been in!

Seaside3 · 07/08/2025 12:59

Im curious as to where you live @TizerorFizz ? This is the 2nd post I've seen where you declare something isn't chic, or modern where you are. Maybe you live in a different country to the op?

@SunnySideDeepDown sounds great. You do whatever suits you and your taste, trends come and go, style and class never do.

Londonmummy66 · 07/08/2025 13:46

I think recent posts have missed the difference between style and trend. Some people will want a modern "hotel style" bathroom. Others might prefer a country house vibe. Both can be elegant - and in my experience the latter is the one favoured by the vair posh people I know. The former will be wall to wall marble or marble effect panels the latter a more vintage feel that will almost certainly have shelves for pretty stuff and some pictures/vintage plates etc. Neither is better than the other - just different personal preferences.

OP glad you have found something you like.

Ours match, to the extent possible (one has a bath with shower overhead and the other a walk in shower). I like that they’re the same. Makes accessories/ other decorating easier too.
