Hi all!

we complete Monday- it can’t come soon enough. We move in the 1st. My husband and I have his mum watching the kids- what’s the first thing we should do..maybe celebratory that day? We are planning to collect keys at noon and let cleaners in in the afternoon. Can’t believe we are in the final count down

Take a kettle and tea stuff.

Our tradition is .. fish and chips out of the paper, sitting on the floor before the furniture gets there x

Changing the locks always comes up here, but I’ve honestly never known anyone to do it in real life! Congrats OP on your new home Flowers

Have the locks changed.
Locate the stopcock.

Check the bathroom and kitchen pipes are fitted with isolating valves.

Take meter readings and get your energy supplier switched over.
Put house insurance in place.
Check fire and carbon monoxide alarms are working.

Pack a case for 3 days with of clothes and toiletries, make sure you have bog roll. Take end meter reading for where you are leaving (even if you have a payment meter the onus is on you to provide) take new meter reading. Check boiler, check hot water works, change all external locks…

Why wouldn’t you? You don’t know who might have a key? It’s a five minute easy job on most doors.

Disable/change passwords on ring doorbells/cameras. Took me a while to get round to this before it occurred to me that the old owner can probably still see me sunbathing! Didn't even think of this!

OP best of luck with your new home. One thing I will say is don’t put yourself under pressure . It’s great that you are getting cleaners in . Just anticipate that a few small things might go wrong or timings out of sync and try not to stress and please enjoy your new home . If you end up eating a few more takeaways than normal dont worry about it.

Make sure house is insured. Completion...you own it. Also contents and car insurance, new address... maybe new rate. You know what you brought in from the list you worked off with the movers, use that, and you have a very detailed list of what you have.(Usually a heck of a lot more than you thought you had.)
Locate stop cock fusebox/main power switch and meters. Read meters.
Mail forwarding and change of address to banks GPs etc.
Taks photos of each room (for a momento if nothing else)
Test washing machine/dryer/appliances.
Also apply to update electoral roll. (Could affect any credit search if not on electoral roll at new address.)

I moved in the day after completion.
Day one
Cleaning and hoovering
Bicarb left on the carpets overnight
Meter readings (photos) and then email utility supplier
Check fire and carbon monoxide alarms are working
New toilet seat
Council registration
TV licence

Update address with: employer, banks, pension provider, doctor, dentist etc

I changed the locks on day two.

If I had the money I would have paid for a cleaner (washing machine, oven and carpets needed attention).

Congrats OP, hope all goes well!
