Hi all!

we complete Monday- it can’t come soon enough. We move in the 1st. My husband and I have his mum watching the kids- what’s the first thing we should do..maybe celebratory that day? We are planning to collect keys at noon and let cleaners in in the afternoon. Can’t believe we are in the final count down

keepondreaming · 24/06/2025 16:48

No kids? Then you should ”christen” each room to celebrate 😜

Haha my husband would love that. I’m 30 weeks pregnant so I can give it my best effort 😂😂😂

Take meter readings and get all the utilities changed to you.

Tooty78 · 24/06/2025 17:34

Make up your bed because you will be shattered by the end of the day.

Gall10 · 24/06/2025 17:36

Read the meters
Send in meter readings
make the bed
order the takeaway
u pack the glasses and corkscrew
chill….boxes will be unpacked eventually, no rush
hope you enjoy your new home!

Find the kettle and toaster

Tooteefrootee · 24/06/2025 19:14

Take meter readings, find kettle, make beds, clean anything that is yucky (e.g. bathroom). Then change locks and toilet seats...

goingroundthebendatthisrate · 24/06/2025 20:46

I admire you, thinking you'd have the energy to celebrate. I have moved house several times, and always all plans go right out of the window, as I've sat around waiting for the solicitors to call to say the money has been transferred, whilst the removal people make all sorts of threats about charging more due to waiting around.

Frankly, I've always found moving day to be about getting everything out of one house and into the next. It's the day after where I start to think about where to begin.

Scrumdiddlyumptiousness · 24/06/2025 20:56

Change the locks, rip out the bathroom carpet if there is one, make up beds, find the kettle, get milk and bread in, take meter readings, sort the wifi.

We are chain free and move the next day. I will be exhausted on Tuesday

Walk around the empty house, and make a list of any DIY niggles.

If its not included in the cleaning... clean the carpets!

Plan where everything is going to go.. I mean stuff like the kettle will use this plug, this cupboard for plates etc.

TheNightingalesStarling · 25/06/2025 07:04

And change your address on amazon, vinted, m&s, eBay etc!! We got a lot of parcels for the old residents in the first few days!

SabbatWheel · 25/06/2025 07:04

Take meter readings
Have a brew
Change the locks
If you’re like my DM, unpack absolutely everything in the kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms and put it away, then order a curry 😂

My kind of woman 😂

Roseblooms · 25/06/2025 07:12

Get all the beds set up and sort the kitchen first so when the kids are there you can easily get them settled.

KPPlumbing · 25/06/2025 07:12

I always have visions of us sipping champagne. But actually, the first thing I always do is get the bed assembled and made up. And the first thing DH does is rig up the internet! 😅

Congratulations OP!

LangmaLady · 25/06/2025 07:14

Find the stopcock.

ChilliChoco · 25/06/2025 07:36

Clean the place
Change the locks
Replace the toilet seats.

BruceAndNosh · 25/06/2025 08:33

Put a large sheet of newspaper on the floor of each room marking where boxes are to be stacked.
Otherwise the removal men will put them all exactly where you want the wardrobe to go!

isitmeamithedrama · 25/06/2025 08:40

Check things like boiler, oven, hob, shower, toilets, windows. If anything don’t work report back to solicitor

move day make your bed the priority. I was building up my bed frame at 1130pm the rest of the house was immaculate and sorted. I just wanted a shower and bed but had to spend time building it up.
have a box with cups, kettle, chargers etc
take meter readings
ive still not changed my locks after 2years!

housethatbuiltme · 25/06/2025 08:42

For us unpacking wise it would be internet first, as we have kids and would need the internet to distract them so we could get anything else done without them being underfoot and nagging.

We are also chain free in rented so taking a whole month to move across slowly (hand only being the other side of the road though).

This is interesting. So if you find that the oven or hob doesn’t work, what can your solicitor do?

isitmeamithedrama · 25/06/2025 12:42

@Piletkaif it’s discovered to be broken as soon as you walk in the house it’s reasonable to assume it was broken and the old owners knew. The solicitor can request repair. Doesn’t always work but it’s worth checking and mentioning.
my induction hob was faulty and was replaced by the seller. Probably because their giant hot tub was in my garden for a week until they could move it and didn’t want me to cause it any damage

Good to know, thank you!
