Would you reopen the fireplace in this sitting room?

I thought i would but people have said that it's off putting if I want to sell.

Pic attached.

I wouldn't just to sell, that would be the choice of the buyer imo. We opened it up and put a log burner in our rental property which I think was an improvement.

PuzzlingRecluse · 06/06/2025 17:48

I’d open it up, just ripped a hideous gas fire out of mine 🎉

No i wouldn't be doing it just to sell. I have no intention of selling for a good 10 years i just wondered if you'd open up the fireplace in this particular room.

Yes. But think about what sort of fire you want. Traditional - Wood burners are lovely but not environmentally friendly. Modern fire places can look great. Which ever you choose it will be a lovely feature in the room.

When you say traditional, do you mean like cast iron type?

In that case I wouldn’t give any thought to what potential buyers might like. You have to live with it.

I personally wouldn’t, simply because we used to have a fireplace and never used it. But I do know other people who use them frequently, so just depends if you think it will get use

Annascaul · 06/06/2025 18:21

Yes, I would.
That shelf looks very odd.

soupyspoon · 06/06/2025 18:21

Without a doubt. We have a log burner and I want one in the kitchen too.

Kattley · 06/06/2025 18:31

Yes.

LibertyLily · 06/06/2025 18:32

I definitely would. I think living rooms are lacking in a focal point without a fireplace.

I'd also put a wood burner in, but that's my personal preference. Virtually the first thing we did after buying our current cottage was rip out the hideous 1960s crazy paved fireplace/gas fire and replace with a HETAS wood burner (a Charnwood same as we fitted in the main living room at our previous, more rural home).

We love it, although it's now going to be in our kitchen as we're swapping the rooms over, so might have to get another! We had one in the kitchen at our last place which we used all the time in the colder months.

I had that shelf hand made because I was going to open up the fireplace then started having doubts.

I love my mantle 😁

What's wrong with log burners?

You can put in a log burner like a closed open fire. I'll find a link to one like.ours.

That's very swish x

They do smaller ones that are down at floor level too. They are a modern take on the logburner. We've had ours about 10 years now.

My parents is even swisher (in my view) but they had an alcove to place it in. In most rooms theirs would stick out a mile.

The Morso 4043 is a contemporary and beautifully designed wood burning stove. The height and large window offer a great view of the fire.

That's lovely. I would have the fireplace gap once I've opened it up. It used to look like this befire the guy before me boarded it up.

So this is our actual barbas which fits your shape. Obviously plants get moved in winter when we use it!

Ahhh image is being reviewed...it should hopefully be approved soon. Drumroll while we wait......

Summerskylarks · 06/06/2025 19:07

Definitely open it up. Could be a lovely feature and I think it does feel as if something is missing. We have ours open (already here when we moved in) and although we don’t use it in this more modern house like we did in our previous older houses, it looks lovely with a candle in it in autumn/winter time. Great selling point when the time does come.

Thanks. It is lovely. I never wanted one as I'm.scared of fire but it's amazing. Pleased I gave in! It heats the house entirely differently to central heating, which we also have. It gives atmosphere.

My Dad's is nicer but probably a lot more expensive to fit and needs a place to sit, whereas ours fits perfectly

LibertyLily · 06/06/2025 19:46

This was ours in the kitchen at our previous house. It wasn't what we had in mind at all till we saw it in the showroom 😍

TheGrimSmile · 06/06/2025 19:53

Yes, definitely. I'd get a woodburner in there.

@Brunocatmonypur room before it was boarded is gorgeous! I’d put the picture rails back in and open up the fireplace. Put in an age appropriate one
