Would you reopen the fireplace in this sitting room?

I thought i would but people have said that it's off putting if I want to sell.

Definitely. Don’t need an actual fire in there, it can just be decorative but it looks odd without a focal point.

What a fabulous room.

Thank you @Brunocatmon! I confess we miss that room although we were desperately keen to move closer to family and are otherwise so pleased we did 🙄

It would look lovely - but an open one would let draughts in - and it depends on the state of the chimney. A beautiful wood/multifuel would be cracking (with a door) so no draughts but could be £2/3k plus - plus you've got to buy wood which has gone up a lot in price depending on where you live - plus some councils don't like them - plus you've got to store the coal and wood somewhere.

Its a lovely idea but not simple IMHO (and 40years of experience with wood-burners)

I'm going against the grain and saying no! Unless you plan to actually use the fire. We don't use ours, so boarded up in dining room and hidden in lounge. I'm the lounge we have a tv above the unused fireplace. I don't like too many focal points, so it's a no to fire in one place, tv in another, window view in another for me. Plus, as previous post, it's expensive to install and make sure chimneybis good, you have to have somewhere to keep fuel. A good gas one might work.well, if that's an option I guess.

Yes, I would.
That shelf looks very odd.

It does.

OP, will you use it? I adore having an open fire and use it a lot. If you don’t plan to use it, take off that weird, stranded-looking shelf and mirror, and do something else entirely with that chimney breast wall.

Profpudding · 07/06/2025 12:13

Don’t have one of those biofuel fires
Mine gave me an absolutely stinking headache and none of the animals would be in the same room as it

Oh my. My beautiful handmade mantle 🤣😭

What would you do on the chimney breast though.i hate tv's on the wall.

I actually would use a fire though, I love a fire.

Why did you commission a mantlepiece before you’d opened up the fireplace?
I’m afraid it does look very peculiar just floating there.

I was planning on opening up the fireplace straight away then the guy who came to put my new floor told me it was a solid wall so I shelved ( see what I did there ) that plan.

Then after speaking to the bloke who i bought the house from, he told me he'd boarded it up so plan to open it up is back on. 🤣

No i wouldn't be doing it just to sell. I have no intention of selling for a good 10 years i just wondered if you'd open up the fireplace in this particular room.

I would!

orangedream · 09/06/2025 08:05

I'd worry that it hadn't been blocked and vented properly.
