Massive regret on new front door

I’m having a bit of a panic. I bought a new front door from a local company, and it's being fitted today. It cost thousands, and I’m full of regret over the choices I made in haste.
Originally, the door had one large side panel, but I decided to centralise it, so now it has two small side panels instead. The doorstep will now be in the wrong place, so that’s going to need to be changed too.
I also picked a white frame to match the white windows instead of having it the same colour as the door, but I’m now worried it’s too much white plastic and will make the door look small and out of place. My house is a 70s build… and I’ve somehow ended up choosing a cottage-style door. No idea what I was thinking.
I rang the company shortly after signing off to see if I could make changes, but they said it was already in manufacturing, so too late.
Feeling really gutted now the money’s spent. Has anyone else hated their door when it went in? Did you learn to live with it, or do something about it?

Agree with @AliBaliBee1234

We have been having loads of work done on the house recently and almost everything we have forked out thousands for, I have set myself off in a panic about making the wrong choice. Including the front door!!!

I agree with others who have said that once it is fitted, get some plants / conifer type trees, maybe hanging baskets, some nice wall lights for either side of the door... My DH always says to me "what we had before was bloody awful and you got used to that!" which is a good point😂

The only thing I am still unsure of in our house is the carpet on the stairs and landing but once we have started to get prints on the wall, plants, soft lamp lighting (instead of the harsh spotlights the builders have installed 😭) then I think I will be happier with it. It's just big changes - I'm a creature of habit!

I had the same last minute panic with our front door. The windows are a black/brown colour so they used the same to frame the door. It’s now been in for two years and I’m glad we left it the colour of the windows.
the first photo was the simulator on the manufacturers web site, the second is the finished product.
I chose the flush casement style windows, they do look better than next doors which are normal style. The front door is white on the inside and makes such a different to the light in the hall. We debated door furniture but the chrome just looked better than brass. We are still looking for a light fitting to match.
The old door was white, wooden with an arched window with multiple pains of glass. DS managed to put his hand through one of them while trying to unlock the door after being spiked on a night out so we didn’t want to replace it with a similar design. The lock is at waist level intentionally.

My door frame is white and it suits the house. I originally wanted a frame the same colour as the door, but change to a white frame after obsessively checking doors when I was out and about and realising a lot had white frames!

@fivefoottwowitheyesofblue

Nothing up to now. It’s definitely an acquired taste but tbh I felt much better as I was peeling the old paint off and noticed there were layers of letter box red, turquoise , navy, green etc. on the row opposite /perpendicular to me there is already lavender/pink blue on those houses and on the row behind me is the most beautiful winding main road with similar houses with duck egg, pink, blue, cream windows and door and there are tons of hanging baskets, roses and wisteria etc so it’s not ridiculously far removed from the feel of the area. But our row of 5 and a shop is very much an island surrounded by main roads so I think it’s possibly shocked the neighbours. It will be getting finished over the weekend and I’ll post photos.

for clarity, the sill/lintels colour is lovers secret on b and q. Kind of pink with coral under tones. The windows and door will be a lighter “spring laughter”.

when I sent my daughter the photo of the freshly painted stone work she replied “what in the balamory have you done mother”. Then my sister said “what’s the story in Balamory “. So I think it’s bright possibly even too bright. But it’s my house and when it’s finished it will look much better and more cohesive.

Perfect example of where the LOL 😆 emoji is required!! But at least this way, everyone else can see and share the spring laughter!!

'What in the balamorey have you done Mother?'

OP.. you can image the passers by in OnyourbarksGSG's street admiring her lintels and wonder if maybe you should do the same!!

Most of us do something like this at some point! Don't beat yourself up. You will either end up just getting used to it, or at least not really caring as much, or it will bother you so much you'll plan to change it at some point when you can afford it. Either way, the sting seeing as a disaster does fade.

@Thingyfanding whats it like? Are you happy with it? I like the pebble grey.

Not quite as bad as I thought but will take some getting used to. They were missing the knocker so that should be fitted Monday. The door looks very odd without it as it has no window, oh and they fitted the wrong escutcheon.

When you have the fittings you choose, it will make a big difference and hopefully you will be happy with it.

Yes. One thing I've learned is not to judge until it's all finished.

Foxhat1 · 05/06/2025 13:20

i Wouldn’t overthink it, we chose a centred black door and the guy recommended going for white surrounds as he said the door colour would “pop” I wasn’t so sure but it looks great and colour really stands out rather for going all the same colour

Thingyfanding · 05/06/2025 13:59

you're all so sweet, thank you. I feel silly getting so upset about it all but you have made me feel much better.

I had a timber door replaced with composite. The timber door was awful, shrank and expanded and full of condensation. I would have preferred timber but it was not practical.

Is that Irish Oak? That is what we are going for. Looks lovely.

PocketSand · 05/06/2025 17:01

Yes it’s endurance doors Irish oak. We have white on the inside.

Why didn't you/they do your design mick with red brick?

hour door us nice.

di you mind saying who you bought it through/what brand the door is?

I still haven't replaced mine as I can't choose 🙇🏻‍♀️

it HAS to be done this summer, I don't want another winter with this one 🙇🏻‍♀️

Thingyfanding · 05/06/2025 18:13

Starting to calm down a bit now. Hardware is coming Monday and the chap about my new step is coming to take a look tomorrow. I've already had a compliment from a neighbour - that cheered me up.

Do we have a photo?

OnyourbarksGSG · 07/06/2025 14:30

So my guy came it today but couldn’t paint the door and frames as it was chucking it down. But he got my planters up and will be fitting me in for the painting as soon as it’s dry enough. I’ve added a few pics to show progress. And I’m no longer worried about the colour being a bit OTT as my sisters work friend lives about 12 doors down on the main road and asked her to find out what colour it is as she loves it. I’ve got enough left over for her to use to join the club 😁

its going to look amazing when all of the plants take off and overflow with flowers. I’ve also got some drain pipe pots coming next week. I’ll update with a final photo of the windows when they are all done.

i think it’s a huge improvement!

This looks amazing. I hope your immediate neighbours follow suit and you end up in a row of rainbow lintels and doors. I would have liked to have painted my new house fully pink but my husband wasnt keen so we are sticking to boring white. I am having a colourful interior though.

This was the manufacturer. We used a local fitter who was recommended. He doesn’t advertise which is always a good sign but has a Facebook site with some of the work he has completed. He was amazing, fitted one window a day so he could complete them and was meticulous in cleaning up. He was also very knowledgeable about the windows and doors and made helpful suggestions during the design stage. We had French windows fitted in place of the old patio doors and advised against bifold because he’d had a lot of problems with them post fitting.
It’s now been two years since fitting them and so far no problems.
The front door has a latch rather than handle that is a bit trickier than a handle but the latch is in the same position as a handle so we can potentially replace it easily in the future.
Apparently the dark window frames are better because they have to use steel in the frames to stop warping in the sun. It makes them more expensive but they are more rigid.
We have a full glass door at the rear because we needed extra light in the kitchen but there is no access to our garden so not a security risk. It also means the dog can see into the garden so would alert us if anyone jumped the fence.

Kind of similar but I recently got my lintels and sills painted, I live in a traditional 2 up 2 down miners cottage . Only 5 houses on the row in a very Picturesque very old village. My neighbours houses all looked beautiful and clean and mine was v dated with cracked peeling paint so I decided to go bold with a nice bright pink even though my immediate neighbours are all black/grey. As soon as it was done I was like 😱🫣😭. But I’m owning it and he’s coming back to paint my windows and door a paler pink to balance it and fit a bunch of planted window troughs and hanging baskets and it’s going to look beautiful when it’s done. Hoping to start a bit of a revolution and inject some bright colours with lots of flowers.

OMG need a photo. (I have a hot pin front door...)

Edit: seen it! Ace!

@OnyourbarksGSG I like how your neighbours have their house number in the window above the door.
