Massive regret on new front door

Thingyfanding · 05/06/2025 05:32

I’m having a bit of a panic. I bought a new front door from a local company, and it's being fitted today. It cost thousands, and I’m full of regret over the choices I made in haste.
Originally, the door had one large side panel, but I decided to centralise it, so now it has two small side panels instead. The doorstep will now be in the wrong place, so that’s going to need to be changed too.
I also picked a white frame to match the white windows instead of having it the same colour as the door, but I’m now worried it’s too much white plastic and will make the door look small and out of place. My house is a 70s build… and I’ve somehow ended up choosing a cottage-style door. No idea what I was thinking.
I rang the company shortly after signing off to see if I could make changes, but they said it was already in manufacturing, so too late.
Feeling really gutted now the money’s spent. Has anyone else hated their door when it went in? Did you learn to live with it, or do something about it?

Whenever i've made expensive changes to my house, i have a similar panic and it always ends up being absolutely fine.

I think a nice fresh white door to match the windows sounds great! That's what i'm saving up for too.

I'd bet once it's in you'll really like it. I guess the most annoying thing would be the doorstep. Maybe try getting some quotes for moving it to have a rough idea when you can start that.

Meadowfinch · 05/06/2025 05:49

It's a door. In the grand scheme of things once it is in and you've lived with it a few days you won't even notice it.

Think about what pots and planting you can use to pull the look together. Tall slim urns with bay trees? Glossy blue Mediterranean pots with summer planting? You'll work it out 🙂

OnyourbarksGSG · 05/06/2025 06:04

Kind of similar but I recently got my lintels and sills painted, I live in a traditional 2 up 2 down miners cottage . Only 5 houses on the row in a very Picturesque very old village. My neighbours houses all looked beautiful and clean and mine was v dated with cracked peeling paint so I decided to go bold with a nice bright pink even though my immediate neighbours are all black/grey. As soon as it was done I was like 😱🫣😭. But I’m owning it and he’s coming back to paint my windows and door a paler pink to balance it and fit a bunch of planted window troughs and hanging baskets and it’s going to look beautiful when it’s done. Hoping to start a bit of a revolution and inject some bright colours with lots of flowers.

Bright pink lintels? Wow!
What have the neighbours said?

IOnlyWantSexMoneyPowerAndRevenge · 05/06/2025 06:16

I wish we'd chosen a different front door but meh. Its a door. One white plastic door merges into another white plastic door. It's hardly a big deal really and how long do you spend actually looking at it? No one else cares and I couldn't tell you what anyone else's white plastic door looks like.

The step is annoying though and Im surprised no one mentioned that when you ordered it.

DonewhatIcando · 05/06/2025 06:45

I bought a white upvc door, to replace a wooden front door.
Chose it out of the builders catalogue, don't know what I was thinking, did I even have my glasses on when I chose it?
It looked like a door to a spaceship (I've not seen many spaceship doors) all plasticy, awful.
I got used to it in the end from the inside but every time I came home I'd wince.
Yours sounds nicer than mine, I think you'll get used to it

17to35 · 05/06/2025 06:46

I’m pretty sure that having the door in the middle of the opening will look better. The step can be extended rather than moved, then tiled to cover any join.
Hope you like it when done.

OP said the frame will be white but the door will be a different colour. OP, if you can’t change the door, can you change the frame? Would that look better?

Doingmybest12 · 05/06/2025 06:52

I think in the long run you'll be happy with white frame, the current trend to have the same will probably move on again. Its the quality of front doors that I notice, most styles look good if the quality is there and it sounds like you've invested a lot of money.

Nothing up to now. It’s definitely an acquired taste but tbh I felt much better as I was peeling the old paint off and noticed there were layers of letter box red, turquoise , navy, green etc. on the row opposite /perpendicular to me there is already lavender/pink blue on those houses and on the row behind me is the most beautiful winding main road with similar houses with duck egg, pink, blue, cream windows and door and there are tons of hanging baskets, roses and wisteria etc so it’s not ridiculously far removed from the feel of the area. But our row of 5 and a shop is very much an island surrounded by main roads so I think it’s possibly shocked the neighbours. It will be getting finished over the weekend and I’ll post photos.

for clarity, the sill/lintels colour is lovers secret on b and q. Kind of pink with coral under tones. The windows and door will be a lighter “spring laughter”.

when I sent my daughter the photo of the freshly painted stone work she replied “what in the balamory have you done mother”. Then my sister said “what’s the story in Balamory “. So I think it’s bright possibly even too bright. But it’s my house and when it’s finished it will look much better and more cohesive.

shewasasaint · 05/06/2025 07:25

To me the door frame looks better if it’s the same colour as the windows so I think you’ve done the right thing. It links them visually.

I’m sure the doorstep can be easily adjusted although I realise it’s yet another expense. If it can be widened you’d have room for a pot of plants which would look lovely.

I also spent a fortune on my door but it’s made such a difference. Let us know when it’s in place how you feel then.

Thousands for a plastic door??

Roselilly36 · 05/06/2025 07:34

You will love it once it fitted OP, I am sure you took great care to design the door. I think to deeply when it comes to making expensive purchases too and doubts creep in. By strange coincidence we are also about to buy a new front door, I have driven myself absolutely mad, to decide on colour, frame colour, fittings etc. I must have spent hours on the Solidor website, we have finally made a decision that I hope we will be happy with. Good luck today OP.

Well, composite. Which in the case is plastic really. Wood wasn't an option. Came to about £2300 with hardware and the annoying side panels...

'what in the Balamory have you done mother' 😂 Ha! Love that response.

Oh well, it's only paint as they say. If you don't get used to it it can always be repainted.

The door colour is a RAL colour pebble grey (I know grey ffs!) but it's more beige than grey. I spoke to chap who said he can paint the frame the same colour at a company that restore UPVC and Composite doors for £300

I’ve got two doors at the front of my house. Replaced them both last year. I can’t even remember if the frames are the same colour as the door or white. I don’t think you’ll be worrying about this for long.

Thingyfanding · 05/06/2025 08:17

Thank you all so much for the kind and reassuring replies - I know it’s a total first world problem, but it’s been stressing me out more than it probably should! I’ll update once the door is in and I’ve had a chance to see it properly in context. Fingers crossed it’s not as bad as I’m imagining!

A personal conservative area is so useful when one wants to ban things.

Pebble grey is a lovely warm greige OP, sure it will look really smart. We used it to paint our conservatory frame. You’ve got a fair deal on the price for a decent composite too.

I’m in a conservation area (shared by the village as it goes 😂) and it’s costing me an eye watering sum to replace our timber windows and doors, so enjoy your composite option!

Also loving the sound of the pink being used by the PP. Reminds me of my favourite seaside fishing village.

This does sound lovely.

The door has arrived. It looks more plastically than I remember in the show room and the knocker is missing! As there's no window in the door the knocker was pretty integral to the look but they're coming back Monday to fit it.
