Induction Hob … yes or no? And worktop advice.

Hi
Can anybody who currently has an induction hob give me some advice/tips/recommendations?
I’m looking to replace a very old kitchen, with a gas hob. I’m moving the hob location and planning to upgrade to an induction hob. I’m not sure which one to buy? Regular or one with built in extraction? Which brand? Any great features I should look out for?
Some friends have advised to keep gas, as the induction hobs are temperamental and don’t work well?
I am confused and need to decide soon.
i am also thinking of 20mm Quartz, is this better/ worse than 30mm?

We’ve just upgraded. You won’t go wrong with a Neff induction. We’ve got the one with flexi zones and power boost. It boils water so quick and I love the dial. I wouldn’t buy integrated as if it goes wrong it would be so expensive and you’ve got your hob out of action too. I’ve read they’re not as powerful and limit what you can have underneath.

Re Quartz we were told by the supplier that most go with 20 these days ( I prefer the look) but it’s down to choice.

in my old house I had a Neff induction hob and I really miss it. I never had any problems and things were so clean and quick. The one thing to look out for it to make sure your houses fuse is big enough to accommodate it.

I think they are brilliant - they work just as well as gas but are far more energy efficient and much, much easier to clean. They are not great if you are seriously into wok cooking as you don't have the flames licking up the sides of the pan, but I can make a decent stir fry in a flat bottom saute pan.

Yes we had to have a new fuse box. You definitely don’t want a plug and go one!! Cleaning it is a dream. A spritz of hob cleaner and a wipe- so satisfying.

Another Neff user - 5 zones, power boost . Separate Neff extractor

ChompandaGrazia · 25/05/2025 20:42

Love my induction. It’s completely different to using electric. If you turn it down or up then it’s instant. Can boil a pan of water in under 2 minutes. Watch Masterchef the professionals and they all have induction hobs. I’d never go back to gas now.

OakyStuff · 25/05/2025 20:46

I love ours too. Power boost is definitely helpful, it boils water incredibly quickly.
We moved rurally and don’t have the option of mains gas. I was a little apprehensive but love our induction hob for all the reasons already stayed and wouldn’t go back to gas. Induction hob and air source heat pump all the way now!

Mingenious · 25/05/2025 20:48

We also have a Neff induction hob and it is magnificent. We went on holiday recently and our apartment had a gas hob and it felt so old fashioned and slow! I’d never go back.

I sgree with all the positive comments on induction. My only comment is we have a Neff with a magnetic removable dial. We find it isn't always very responsive and sometimes just doesn't work.
We have a 5 zone hob and find the extra space useful when using big pans/casseroles. We have the one with flexi zone but never use that, only as 2 separate rings.

Oblomov25 · 25/05/2025 20:51

AEG Induction and it's fab, just a wipe down and it's clean.

Love love love our neff induction hob, not sure I could go back to gas and the faff of cleaning it all

Gundogday · 25/05/2025 20:53

We went induction and it’s fine. I like how you can reduce the temperature instantly, unlike our previous electric hob.

Ours removable knob has always worked perfectly… except for when it’s got stuck to the bottom of a tray and gone through the dishwasher.

They cost £50 to replace so I wouldn’t recommend doing that. (even though I’ve done it several times!)

We were advised against the magnetic dial. Our Neff one has touch control. I think we’ve got more cooking space as there aren’t the knobs that you have with gas taking up space.

Flamingoflop · 25/05/2025 20:54

We have a bora with integrated extractor and it is great. It is amazingly quick, can boil water as quick as a kettle and the integrated extractor works really well. I also like how you can put a tea towel under the pans to catch any water.

Femalefootyfan · 25/05/2025 20:54

We have an induction hob, no idea what brand it is as it was in our house when we bought it. I’d never used one before but I was so impressed that we kept it when we had a new kitchen put in. I wouldn’t go back to gas now and I was a big fan of a gas hob before. Like others have said, it’s quick to heat up, it cooks down really quickly and so easy to keep clean. We have a separate extractor, I didn’t know you could get integrated ones.

iwanttobeapandamum · 25/05/2025 20:56

We’ve had an induction hob for nine years. Not a single issue with it. It’s not temperamental at all. Obviously you need induction compatible pans but you can get them anywhere. I love the sleekness of it. So easy to clean and looks good.

Strollingby · 25/05/2025 20:57

Have had Nef induction since 2019. Was going for gas but swapped late in the process following recommendations from friends and demo from kitchen designer. Am so glad we did and wouldn't go back to gas by choice.
Apart from the advantages already mentioned it's also a useful piece of worktop space when not used for cooking.

rulerofthepencils · 25/05/2025 20:58

Make sure it is hardwired in, my oven is on a conventional 3 pin plug but my induction is hardwired in because it is powerful. Combining zone is essential for bigger pans because if you oversize the pan for the hob zone size the outsides of the pan will rely on the heat from the middle of the pan to get hot. It is very unlike gas.

Positives, mine still looks new with a few scratches after 12 years of having it. Easy to clean, easy to control. Heats up incredibly fast. No naked flames, cooler in the kitchen because it is induction. I would never go back to gas.

If you want to try one before you commit to a whole hob, you can buy a single or two ring plug in induction hob from lots of places. We used that to try it out and then used it for when we had our kitchen ripped out. Just put it outside and cooked on it, brought it back in later.

Buildingthefuture · 25/05/2025 21:02

Absolutely yes to induction. As responsive as gas, far easier to clean, what’s not to love? Absolutely no to one with built in extraction. It doesn’t work. Overhead extraction (ducted not charcoal) is far better.

IOYOYO · 25/05/2025 21:03

Induction always. Gas hobs aren’t good for the environment or the air quality of our homes. Induction are much better to cook on for 90% of people - if you are a typical home cook, it will be a good fit. I’d avoid the built in extraction though - they’re notoriously average at best and echo pp who said if it breaks it’s a whole job unit that needs fixing or replaced. Check with your kitchen designer/distributor/installer re: depth of worktop and the particular hob you choose.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 25/05/2025 21:11

Yes, love induction. Far less cleaning - quick wipe, done. Preferably 5 rings Bosch or Neff. I would never go back to gas.

Bigpinkbubblebath · 25/05/2025 21:28

We have an AEG and I can’t imagine using anything else now. Super responsive and so easy to clean. You have to have induction friendly pans which isn’t a biggy.

Kitchendilemas · 25/05/2025 22:28

Thank you everyone who has replied. Feeling more confident now & the majority are giving very positive comments about Neff hobs. I will definitely check these out. I will have to add a separate power supply so didn’t want to make a costly mistake. Really appreciate the feedback 🙂

Had the bog standard hotpoint for a year, cook every day multiple times and all going well! Swapped out the old gas hob. It's as easy to clean as electric but as quick as gas. Love it to bits. You do have to replace all your pans though. Thankfully mine were all ancient!
We first tried it in an air bnb so that might be an idea to have a testrun if you can find one?
Enjoy!
