I would NEVER buy a house with…

  • solar panels
  • a ‘garden house’ IE a lockdown special outdoor wooden shed dressed up as an office - usually taking up half the garden and completely pointless
  • a neighbour who has a load of cars / shit in their yard - hoarder vibes

who’s next? 3 things that would make you not buy a house…

Why the en-suite?

I don't want one, I prefer bedroom and toilet facilities to be completely separate.

TheShusher · 24/05/2025 13:57

Anything shared - driveway / rear access etc. Never again!

canyon2000 · 24/05/2025 13:57

Why no solar panels? We save hundre

Mumteedum · 24/05/2025 13:58

With … out a bath
With an open plan kitchen / lounge
With a huge expanse of artificial grass

Agreed 👍🏻

Also

Leaded windows in those diamond patterns

Fake beams on ceiling

No parking

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 24/05/2025 13:58

Known damp problems
No factor
Poor insulation

They are - the en-suite is another room, linked to the bedroom by a door. It isn’t in the bedroom

Viviennemary · 24/05/2025 14:00

Main bathroom downstairs. Toilet too near kitchen. Any central heating except gas. Driveway or garden on a slope. Stairs in lounge. Same road as a school

Toolatetoasknow · 24/05/2025 14:00

Don't really notice our solar panels, except that for 2/3rds of the year they power the house.

You've obviously never bought windows.

I've just done so. 1930s property. Lots of period features.

Modern critall style windows - 45K aluminium, 55K steel.
UPVC with similar glazing pattern (and same as rest of neighbourhood) 17.5K.

It wasn't a difficult decision.

I’ve obviously never bought windows 🤣 my child I’ve bought many.

A north facing garden

FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar · 24/05/2025 14:01

No hallway
Open plan
Laminate flooring

Berryslacks · 24/05/2025 14:03

I understand the cost savings but I think solar panels look awful when retrofitted. A new house with the solar panels intergrated into the roof they look fine. Maybe it was just the area I lived in but the houses with solar panels were always covered in pigeon shit. Flocks of them seem to nest underneath the panels. A neighbour across the road had them fitted. He was tormented by the pigeons scratching around under them on his roof day and night.

Yep if I see a house with solar panels on on rightmove I just scroll on by. I’m at the time in my life I don’t want an ugly house regardless of ‘savings’ haha

For me, it's far too close to the bedroom. I prefer walking out into a hallway or landing to access a door into a bathroom. The idea of DH's smells wafting into the bedroom would give me the boak.

I know. I'm the same. A completely separate room, please!

Yes couldn’t live near a school especially now children just seem to shriek and scream 24/7

Almost all of the above, although I don't mind an en suite as long as it's a decent size. Small ones make me feel as though I'm pissing in a cupboard.

To the "St Georges flag in window" I would add St George's flag or Union Jack on a flagpole. There are a few of these on big houses round my way and I just think "right-wing Brexiteers" when I see one.

My prejudice was confirmed when I found out that a house with one of these that I pass quite regularly was owned by a colleague's father, who was a vile racist shit, and that's in her own words.

He's moved to Spain now, despite being pro-Brexit and anti-immigration...

Don’t think I’ve ever seen a property with any kind of flag on a pole in real life

I'm at the age where I'm hoping my next house will be my last so a downstairs toilet, en suite, easily maintained garden and drive/garage are a must.

SapphireSeptember · 24/05/2025 14:11

I'm never going to be able to buy a house, unless I won the lottery, but renting wise,
No bath.
Front door right on the street.
Electric heating.

Oh god... Our elderly Tory neighbours have one down the road. It's a normal semi on an estate.i hate it and I only pass them in the car!

Take a drive through Yorkshire, Union Flags in every other garden.

KateDelRick · 24/05/2025 14:12

There are quite a few houses with flagpoles in our area, they tend to be big properties with large gardens. One has quite a selection of flags, and they seem to fly them at appropriate times eg National Days etc. some flags are quite obscure and we've had to look them up!
The other person flies a Welsh flag (we're not in Wales).

Mumteedum · 24/05/2025 14:14

Saying that I do have a friend who has a flag pole in their garden. They're not impacting anyone as it's a large garden and they fly a jolly roger and silly things usually. They're near a school and the kids like it!

Feetinthegrass · 24/05/2025 14:17

Plastic anything on the house - windows, doors, grass.

A lack of visual trees and wildlife

Near any kind of noise from busy roads, airports etc.
