I'm considering moving to live by the sea in Bournmouth, I like the cosmopolitan nature of the region with people who seem so at ease with themselves, yet erudite.... any comments?

OP posts:

Why not? I friend of mine moved to Worthing recently and she’s in her mid sixties.

Ontothenextac · 19/05/2025 15:15

what Kind of place do you currently live?

any friends or family near there? If not, easy access to them?

Ontothenextac · 19/05/2025 15:15

this comes across as a touch… well weird OP

WimbyAce · 19/05/2025 15:19

Personally I wouldn't touch Bournemouth with a barge pole!

SummertimeFeelingFine · 19/05/2025 15:23

Uhm. I'm not sure you necessarily have the right idea about the region and its people...

But you can move anywhere you like at 66, or indeed any other age.

WimbyAce · 19/05/2025 15:28

I mean if you like the company of druggies and tramps then fill your boots! Bournemouth is a cesspit.

notatinydancer · 19/05/2025 15:28

What does ‘at ease with themselves, yet erudite mean ?’
Bournemouth used to be lovely years ago.
Of course you can move anywhere at any age Confused

MissMoneyFairy · 19/05/2025 15:29

Whereabouts in Bournemouth are people cosmopolitan and erudite? What are you looking for, a lot of the area is very run down now with added crime, I can think of mich nicer places to live

mintydoggyv · 19/05/2025 15:47

Do you want something near the coast . 66 is young you could move anyway. Although friends live in Mudeford near Bourn mouth which is nice .

Agree with this, Bournemouth isn’t that great at the moment, there are much better places in Dorset.

@ByDearHare

It's JAMMED with multiple 1000s of (university) students, (20,000 people go to Bournemouth university ... ) And many MANY homes in Bournemouth are full of said students. (Between 4 and 7 in each house...) Only the seafront part is nice really (IMO,) The town itself is a bit... well like a city. A little bit rough - with quite a number of vagrants. It's also got a higher than average crime rate. Not somewhere I would want to live. Unless I was 21.

Where have you got these ideas from (about what people are like in Bournemouth?!) Confused

If you were thinking of the southbourne/ Christchurch/new Milton areas they are lovely… lots of older people there with great community centres.
central Bournemouth I wouldn’t recommend (just my personal opinion!)

Bath is nice

I was once told that there was a trend in the 70s for opening drug rehab clinics in Bournemouth under the belief that the sea air would aid their rehabilitation.

If you’re looking for erudite I’m not sure Bournemouth is what you’re after.

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 19/05/2025 16:44

@ByDearHare , have you been there recently? We went with our elder son and his family a couple of weeks ago and it’s an absolute shit hole. I didn’t really feel safe and I don’t ever want to take my grandchildren there again!

FrenchandSaunders · 19/05/2025 16:47

Bournemouth is an odd place these days. Much nicer places on the outskirts.

jollygoose · 19/05/2025 16:48

For goodness sake stop knocking Bournemouth yes it has its problems but lots of suburbs are lovely including Southbourne, Westbourne and nearby Christchurch. I met an elderly lady who moved 2 years ago from Cambridge and she said how happy she was and wished she had done it years ago. Personally I have settled there 10mins from a gorgeous sandy and quiet beach and am living my best life.

TianasBayou · 19/05/2025 16:54

Such dramatics about Bournemouth 🙄Yes I’d agree the town centre has lost its way but there are many lovely places to live within the wider area, like Southbourne, Highcliffe and over the border into Hampshire and the New Forest.

Sourisblanche · 19/05/2025 16:59

I really like Bournemouth. I was in Alum Chine recently and they were older ladies going for a sea swim.

DancingFerret · 19/05/2025 17:22

Central Bournemouth is a shadow of what it used to be; if your budget will run to it, Canford Cliffs to the west or Mudeford Quay/Friars Cliff to the east are much nicer areas.

Imogene · 19/05/2025 18:25

It’s not that bad!!
