Best place to get boxes for a house move

Where is the best place to get boxes for a house move? And, if anyone can give me an idea on house move costs (the moving bit) then let me know.

I want to start sorting through stuff and packing now our house has sold.

Argos sell moving boxes but they ain’t cheap . I would start picking them up from shops just ask if they have any or ask on fb groups some people keep them in their lofts .

Avocadosandlimes · 11/05/2025 15:43

I bought some from Ikea which held up well. I found it easier to stack them when they were all the same size, rather than lots of random ones from shops (although I did do this too).

corlan · 11/05/2025 15:44

People often ask for them on the local Facebook page - worth a try!

BangersAndGnash · 11/05/2025 15:45

Our removal company delivered a massive load.

Then collected them from our new house once we had unpacked.

Reallybadidea · 11/05/2025 15:47

Our house moving company supplied all our packing materials as part of the package.

Bit random - but if you know anyone who works in operating theatres then they may be able to give you lots of large boxes. The theatre department I work in always has a massive stack saved for people moving house.

Online you can buy but look on local facebook and WhatsApp groups as those of us who get meal boxes are always offloading them. I have 8 mid sized boxes in n Somerset!

Aussiegold · 11/05/2025 16:49

Next Door app round here. I spent a happy morning going round the neighbourhood, collecting large boxes from people who were thrilled they didn't have to break them up to get them in to the recycling.

Bonus was most came with packing materials included!

Do you know anyone who works for a business with a warehouse? Ask around.

I get any cardboard boxes I need from the very helpful stores guy in our goods-in department, where the boxes are otherwise flattened and sent for recycling.

CandidHedgehog · 11/05/2025 17:09

Freecycle? I’ve seen both requests and offers on there.

themonkeysnuts · 11/05/2025 17:11

have you got a Dumhelm nearby ?
ours has a facebook page where you can ask them to save you some

Redglitter · 11/05/2025 17:12

Local fb page. Ours always has people looking for or giving away boxes.

maddiemookins16mum · 11/05/2025 17:24

Two of the best places we popped in and asked for boxes were Hobbycraft and Smyths Toys.

Wexone · 11/05/2025 17:27

argos or a specialists removal companies. you need ones you can lift but also stack neatly for travelling. I wouldn't recommend at all getting ones from supermarkets - bad experience and caused damage- they aren't strong enough. I have moved 4 times the past 5 years so am well versed.

Flubadubba · 11/05/2025 17:41

Also worth asking anyone who works in a library.

Charlottejbt · 11/05/2025 17:45

Tesco banana boxes for books.

We bought stack it boxes for breakables, rubble sacks for clothes, towels, cushions, bedding, a robust shop clothing rack to transport clothing

So I got 4 removal quotes - moving approximately 30 miles away (Northern Home Counties) and all quotes including packing up the house the day before - 4 bed house with Garage. Quotes ranged from £1800, two came around £3K and one was £3300. Hoping to use the £1800 quote! I brought boxes from Amazon as I know there is stuff that will remain in boxes for a while - until I get some shelving built.

ScoobyDoesnt · 11/05/2025 18:05

I did a tip run recently as I’m downsizing soon and was clearing out my garage and shed - and someone had dumped a load of flattened boxes in one of the large skips.

The nice tip man climbed in and got them all out for me :)

TumbledTussocks · 11/05/2025 21:36

I’ve always just gone round local shops, newsagents,
supermarkets and restaurants. They usually give you a time to come back and save loads for you.

Apparently if you use movers boxes they’re great shapes for different things and more easily stackable but which is great but if you have the time free and being recycled / anyway has always been fine for me.

People often give away moving boxes on local Facebook groups too.

If you have a street WhatsApp it’s worth asking there as a lot people get deliveries and will save boxes for you.

Agreed. The removal ones are strong, a standard size and stack neatly

Random ones are okay for foot wear, clothes.

I bought a big roll of bubble wrap and wide tape marked FRAGILE in big red letters.

The removal company will take the boxes back.

the radom ones ruined my shoes 😫😱
what is also good is the good boxes we're great to leave in spare rooms until ready to unpack. I am in my house now 7 months and still bloody unpacking 😫

Wexone · 11/05/2025 21:45

am in Ireland but the company I bought from had a package where you could buy covers for sofas mattress rolls of bubble wrap aswell as brown tape and a tape dispenser

Karmatime · 11/05/2025 21:54

I bought ours from Amazon. We put them up on Facebook market place afterwards - free to collect, lots of people seem to do that so worth a look.
My advice would be not to get the extra large ones, they are too heavy if full.

Sunnyside4 · 12/05/2025 08:48

If you're using removers, I'm pretty sure they'll supply boxes - at least ours have on the three occasions we've moved.
