Right move listing am I being ridiculous?

Settle a discussion between me and my husband.
I said that if a right move listing doesn’t have a picture of the front of the house as the main picture I usually scroll past. e.g if the first pic is of the garden, inside of the house, or drone shot.
He said I’m being ridiculous. He’s probably right but got me thinking as we’re going to sell our house soon what stops you clicking on a listing and what is the ideal first picture?

I agree with you. If it isn’t the front of the house I think they’ve got something to hide - bad area, horrible front garden etc. Completely puts me off.

WomenInSTEM · 30/04/2025 07:42

It makes me wonder why, and assume that there's something wrong with the front of the house.

ZaZathecat · 30/04/2025 07:43

I also scroll past

YOLOPPL · 30/04/2025 07:43

I agree with you, if the first pic isnt the front of the house i assume its dodgy and something is being hidden.

Lonelycrab · 30/04/2025 07:46

To me it normally says there’s something not quite right or not very attractive with the front. And it’s often true when you scroll through to the end of the pics or look at it on street view.

MiddleAgedDread · 30/04/2025 07:49

Agree!

TheNinthLock · 30/04/2025 07:50

I agree with you. The front of the house is the first impression. If that first impression is not good enough to be lead-picture, then there is something wrong with the house.
I browse rightmove a lot and have not yet found an exception to the rule. Actually, that's a lie. There was a stunning house on the cost where the main picture was the sea-view from the garden. But that was the one and only exception.

Doingmybest12 · 30/04/2025 07:51

If I was seriously looking for a house I wouldn't click past if it's the right price and number of bedrooms ,but I would assume its an ugly house or unattractive for some reason, if curb appeal is number 1 priority then i can see it would put some people off. Sometimes it makes me take time to find out why it's not the first picture but more out of curiosity so wouldn't recommend it as a strategy.

Mmhmmn · 30/04/2025 07:53

First pic should be front of house unless there’s a really really impressive photo of something else that’s a major draw about the property. I then scroll backwards from the first picture to see whether other houses back onto it before looking at the interior pics.

pizzaHeart · 30/04/2025 07:55

Sorry OP but you are being ridiculous.
The front of the house as the first picture helps imagine the house and understand the flow. It’s true. However the lack of it wouldn’t stop me looking.
I would identify location area and my price range and then methodically click on all houses which meet the criteria.

andweallloveclover · 30/04/2025 07:56

Why when selling a house, would your first photo not be of the front of the house? Its normally because its not the most attractive house or there is something about the house that may put people off.

The agents will use what they deem something that might draw people in to look further such as a nice kitchen or garden instead. It wouldn't stop me having a look if it was the right price/area/bedrooms etc though but it would make me intrigued as to what was wrong with it.

slamdunk66 · 30/04/2025 07:57

I wouldn’t scroll past especially if it had an amazing view or garden. I would want to see how ugly the front of the house was though.

Haggisfish3 · 30/04/2025 08:01

What?! Can’t believe I think so differently! To me it often just means the house looks the same as all the rest on the estate and is a way of standing out a bit.

letsnotIRL · 30/04/2025 08:01

When we sold our property the back of the house was the first photo, real estate agent said it was to draw people in because the back was gorgeous, huge flat lawned garden with path leading to patio area and French doors, garage to the side. Just lovely. Nothing wrong with the front of the house, just agent choice 🤷🏻‍♀️

When we sold a property before that the photos were in zero type of order and all over the place, there was an issue uploading the images the agent didn't realise till we rang 😅

Definitely wouldn't stop me clicking!

abracadabra1980 · 30/04/2025 08:08

Agree with you and it HAS to have kerb appeal.

CrispEater2000 · 30/04/2025 08:09

I agree if the first shot isn't the front of the house it makes me think something is off. The EA will often just go in and rearrange the order of pictures if a house has been sat a while, "freshen things up", which could explain it, but an exterior picture is pretty much what people expect to see.

Onemorepenny · 30/04/2025 08:15

The only thing that makes me discount a place is a floorplan without dimensions. Hate that so much.

Sauvin · 30/04/2025 08:17

You are right, your husband is wrong.

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 30/04/2025 08:17

I kind of agree but also Yabu 🙈

I say that because we bought a house i studiously avoided for weeks for this very reason!!! And our house is pretty much mary Poppins perfect for our family.

The vendors thought the kitchen was amazing so insisted it was picture 1. We actually ripped it out 3 years in 🫠 and we got a good price because it had low interest (crap pictures and kitchen as first photo)

The exterior is actually fine and has off road parking which is great
its edwardian (nice) and pebbledashed (🤢) which i dont like but I DO like it more than i like spending 5k to paint or 20k to strip to brick so it has stayed.

It's 30 seconds of looking time

Ophy83 · 30/04/2025 08:19

I'm quite happy with a picture of the back of the house so long as there is a picture of the front somewhere. Round here a lot of houses are standard railway terraces, and all look essentially the same from the front. But the view from the back shows a lot more e.g. lovely garden, kitchen extension, loft bedroom with juliette balcony etc. Maybe all 3!

Reallybadidea · 30/04/2025 08:20

You're not wrong that there's is usually something slightly unattractive about the front of the house, but as a pp said, it is pretty daft to not look at the house at all. Our current house is pretty fugly at the front but it was absolutely what we were looking for apart from that and the front can (and will!) be changed.

Doris86 · 30/04/2025 08:21

You are being ridiculous Why would you scroll past what might be the perfect house for you? It only takes a minute or two to click into the listing, and decide if it’s something you’re interested in viewing or not.

Bonbonvanilla · 30/04/2025 08:21

I don't know if I'd scroll past because I'm not necessarily adverse to an ugly house outside, if it ticks all the other boxes for a good price, but I would assume there was a reason they hadn't used it.

ThisPithyJoker · 30/04/2025 08:26

I totally agree with you. Not sure I know why, but I do scroll past. I suppose you get a 'feeling' about a house from the front as though you're looking at a face. I'm not sure it's logical but I suppose I assume it's likely to be an unappealing front aspect and I therefore wouldn't be interested regardless of how the interior looks. I think you can probably assume a lot about an area from the front of the house, too (age of the houses, whether parking is a nightmare etc) and I'd assume that estate agent had done it in a calculated way.

godmum56 · 30/04/2025 08:41

One thing that no one has mentioned is that for me it depends on how many options come up on my search. If its only 3 or 4, I'd look at them all, but if its loads and I am wanting to filter, I might well filter out the ones where the front isn't the first image.
