Do you think this would look silly - kitchen layout Q

We had IKEA do a mock up based on our own design. Now we've had a chance to sit with it, we think there is too little prep/surface space.

Have been through many options and the one that feels like the best compromise is to reduce the length and height of the tall cupboards on the shorter wall, as indicated by the orange line. The one nearest the wall would have an integrated fridge freezer, and the one next to it would be two ovens, with drawers underneath. The rest of the cupboards would all be single level.

Thoughts? Would it look daft? Have attached an image I saw on instagram that doesn't look too bad?

(The tiles aren't what we're having).

Excuse my terrible stylus skills! Floor layout attached, roughly to scale.

F/F looks shit will make it look smaller I’d make the kitchen u shaped and put a 400mm unit in front of the F/F

I'm not sure what you mean, do you mean bringing units under the window? The height of the window precludes this, it's not as tall as a standard unit.

The diagram makes it clearer, but clearer to see it isn't easy!

What is your current layout, does that work, and are you trying to add something extra in?

Under counter fridges/freezers are not as big but give worktop.

Depending how expensive the meter move is, that might be a worthwhile option.

If the cupboard will fit the washing machine, why won't it fit the fridge freezer? The height rather than depth?

You do get all sorts of options now in different heights. Had to get one for my dad to go in a non full height cupboard and was surprised at the options. Even variations in width.

If you could relocate the f/f it opens up the options. I couldn't make ours work either until we did that.

I know you said you don't like too cupboards but yours are dark. If you have them wall to wall in a light colour it would look different.

Is there any where else the washing machine can go? Built into bathroom for example?

There is a gas meter in that cupboard that precludes a fridge freezer. It's placed in a way that wouldn't let us have the height of the fridge/freezer.

Up to what height? Presumably it clears the washing machine. You do get shorter ones.

Or could you have an under counter fridge and put the freezer in there?

Under counter fridges can be great but are not all equal. We have a main one in our kitchen and it holds loads. We got another for extras, beer etc in the adjoining room and it's fine for that purpose but the layout is rubbish in comparison. So if you do go this route, look at them carefully (and the lesser one is the bigger brand).

The only other way I can see any increase in work surface space would be to move the sink so the drainer goes over what I assume is the dishwasher at the very end. That way you gain a slightly longer run between obstacles.

You said the window is the wrong height to allow a u shape. My mum had similar and they extended the worktop into it so it's extra deep there which looks good and provides useful extra space.

Have you room for a small island unit in the middle. With a bin and some prep space, maybe some drawers for extra storage?

Ilovemyshed · 20/04/2025 19:03

Just scrolled back and seen the plan. I would do a small island with a table attached to it.

YouBelongWithMe · 20/04/2025 20:51

I actually love the idea of the worktop surface running under the window! This might be a fantastic solution to a lot of our issues! Thank you so much for showing me those options. Am now wondering if it's possible to have the sink there (there is a waste pipe in place already from the original kitchen layout before the renovation). How lovely to look out at the garden whilst we do the dishes...

Although in hindsight I'd be washing the window every day... Hmm.
