Help me with kitchen colour

Giving our kitchen a bit of an uplift, keeping the cupboards and granite worktops, but looking to change the paint, tiles, and add some free standing furniture (corner seat, dresser and larder cupboards) on the other side of the room in a contrasting colour.

My current thinking is farrow and ball railings for the cupboards, and to have dimpse or skimming stone on the walls with slightly darker woodwork. But I can't work out what tiles would look good with this combo.

Also wondering if there are other combos that may look good? Keen to get away from the green (the whole kitchen hall and all the landings were the same colour when we moved in so I'm ready for a change!

Any ideas from those with more vision gratefully received 😊

We used orange in ours!
Cupboard doors are white, worktops are mainly brown quartz, the peninsular unit is orange quartz worktop. We saw lovely orange glass in a showroom that we liked for the microwave area and bookshelf above but decided it was too expensive so used wood that we painted orange and varnished. Our dining chair seats were then covered with orange fabric and we have orange cushions on our light green sofa to tie the whole space together.

I actually really like your tiles 😀 Not helpful, sorry!

Goforhappy · 18/04/2025 12:32

I like your current tiles!

We're in the middle of our kitchen re-do, I struggle to 'see' design ideas and I've found taking photos and asking chat gtp to change the colour of something (cupboard/wall/ tiles etc) a really useful way to imagine what it could look like.

LittlePickleHead · 18/04/2025 16:28

ChatGPT is a good shout!

Also interesting that our current tiles are popular. They do look nice but as we didn't choose it I kind of want to make it our own.

'Busy' granite wouldn't be my choice though and I'm finding it hard to see colours and designs that go with it that I like.

I get you want to make it your own, but I wouldn't paint the cupboards or change the tiles, I think they are lovely. I would save the money for new worktop and paint the walls. I think that would give a bigger transformation look.

LittlePickleHead · 18/04/2025 16:33

Oh interesting - what worktop would you go for? They are obviously expensive tops so I was feeling a bit wasteful changing them

I love the tiles, they're beautiful!! I'd change the work tops to wood if I was going to do anything.

I agree - keep the tiles, change the worktop

SpidersAreShitheads · 19/04/2025 03:27

I came here to say the same as PP! Tiles are lovely but I’m less keen on the worktop.

I see you feel a bit wasteful scrapping it - have you thought about getting it wrapped? I’ve never done that myself but I’ve heard others talk about it and they’ve been pleased with the outcome. Might be an option?

We had wood worktops put in about 18months ago and I bloody love them. We went for iroko as it’s a swamp wood that can cope better with moisture so no issues with black marks. I also like the fact that if someone scratches or marks the surface you can just sand it out and re-oil and it looks brand new again.

mjf981 · 19/04/2025 06:57

I agree with others - I quite like the tiles, don't like the worktop.
A wood worktop would look good.
And brass handles on the doors.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 19/04/2025 07:05

You might be able to re-purpose the worktop as a table top elsewhere or sell it to someone for this.

MimiSunshine · 19/04/2025 07:22

I put your image into chat GPT with a few prompts and further decision making based on suggestions and this is what came out.

still got some green in which you said you wanted to get away from but I really like this.

prompt:
What colour would be best to paint the cupboard doors to match the worktops in this photo to give the kitchen a bold new look

Same but with kitkat tiles if you wanted a different type than you had before

I saw the tiles, didn't read the OP and thought pink would be nice 😆

Yes to changing the worktop. Your paint ideas are too dark for me. Is it a large room with lots of natural light?

LittlePickleHead · 19/04/2025 09:21

Yes there is a lot of natural light - the cabinets are bespoke handmade Formica and ply so we can't change the colour or add handles, I'm happy to leave them as they are but does mean to say the rest of the colours need to work with them.

I've done some GPTs of the opposite direction (the first is how it is now), now I'm confusing myself with too many options 😂

"bespoke handmade Formica and ply" - lovely, I am envious!

I really like it as it is, sorry. Apart from the worktop. I don't like any of the dark paint colours.

PickledElectricity · 19/04/2025 09:30

Sorry, but I also like your kitchen as it is 🫣 I think changing things just because you didn't pick them originally is a bit petulant?

From the ai images the peach and orange looks nice.

LittlePickleHead · 19/04/2025 09:56

Happy to be told I'm petulant 😂

I really like the dark dresser so I'm happy to own that, just can't work out what tiles to go with the worktop so I concede the worktop is probably the issue, it dominates the colours in the room because it's so busy.

Will look into replacing with wood (which will match the ply features so I think will go)

Right decision! Just paint the walls and change the worktop. It will save you money, and give you the change you want.

LittlePickleHead · 19/04/2025 10:09

Another AI attempt (it doesn't seem to be able to keep the cabinet style though). The worktop does make the room look warmer.

Ah that's lovely. I almost got oak but ended up going with walnut at the last minute and I'm obsessed! You do need to oil it regularly though unless you go for the faux effect.

Roselilly36 · 19/04/2025 10:26

I like the tiles, I would change the worktops, this alone would give the kitchen an updated look. Regards to paint shades, you could contrast to the tiles with lavender, dusty pink, taupe, muted colours I prefer for a kitchen personally to make the most of the light & space.

I like the 2nd image (the dark dresser) best. I’d go with this option and change the tiles a matt finish, in the same colour as the dresser. I think your work tops would look better too then.

personally I think a wooden work top could class with your cabinets
