Would you complete on a day that is a family members birthday?

Looking at completing / moving in a date which is also my mum's birthday. Would that bother anyone else or just go for it?

No longer live with my mum

From my time working in a conveyancing firm, we used to hear all manner of reasons why one party didn't want to complete on 'certain' days. A regular one requested for completion was Auspicious days, but I confess there weren't many that wouldn't agree to move on a family member's birthday. Everyone should remember that dates have to be agreed for all the people in the chain. If conveyancing solicitors listened to everyone's wishes, no-one would ever move.

What difference does the birthday make? Send a card in the post, asyou presumably would normally, and crack on with your move. No reason to disrupt your life for an adult's birthday, and if you want your mother to help you move then presumably it won't make any difference to her either.

What difference would it make??

Toddlerteaplease · 13/04/2025 15:08

Wouldn’t even cross my mind not to.

You are seriously overthinking this OP!! 🤦‍♀️

Yes - it’s hard enough for everyone in the chain to agree on a convenient completion date without people bringing family birthdays into it!

😀Imagine if everyone in the chain wanted specific days out of the equation because of a birthday 😀

Thanks everyone for thoughts.

I wasnt bothered by it at all , someone close to me mentioned it might not be the best idea. Just caused me to pause for a second and wondered how others viewed such things and it looks the same as me does not matter at all!

We completed on our house purchase on the day I gave birth 😂 so my daughter’s birth day!

Thankfully we were in a rental and so we didn’t do the moving day until 2 weeks later.

I wouldn’t bat an eyelid if my close relative completed / moved house on my birthday. You can go out for a meal with them the weekend before or after.

Can’t see why this even an issue, and find it bizarre that someone might think it was.

Huh? I think I live on a different planet than some posters

SpringIsSpringing25 · 13/04/2025 17:05

What do you think your mother will think?

Does this other person know your mum well? And do they suspect she'll be put out by it?

Just trying to see what their angle is?

My mum lives overseas so it wouldn't actually make any difference, but if I lived there or she lived here, she wouldn't want me to change the date & she'd come and 'help' 🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️ and would have little bits of celebration through the day and go out for dinner at some point in the days afterwards, when we could enjoy it

Only date I might try and avoid are a child's birthday.

In reality you might not get to dictate an exact date. Last time we had a lot of messing around at the bottom of the chain, one person in the chain had a mortgage offer which was about to expire so had to take up towards last minute for a completion - happened to be on the one day DH really couldn't take off work, but it was more important for us to keep the chain intact and move.
