Tell me about Nailsea….

DD has potentially been priced out of her choice of areas of Bristol - eg Brislington, St Anne’s type.
she doesn’t want to buy in eg Easton or Hartcliffe type areas as she will be living alone and wants a safe community.
some affordable (just) places in Nailsea - is it rough or a good alternative?
thanks!

Thank you, good to know more about Nailsea.
the Allison road one - would be perfect but there’s planning permission for 260 houses right behind it so the lovely view will be gone!

Whereabouts does DD work? Commuting is also a deciding factor.

I used to commute from north Bristol out to Nailsea and if there was a bridge swing in the Cumberland Basin it added considerable time to the journey.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 10/04/2025 22:28

@MrsMoastyToasty she works mainly from
home, one day a week in a co working place in the centre, maybe one day somewhere out and about (uni, out of town etc)

I grew up in Nailsea and moved back here 10 years ago, it is boring as anything - I hated it as teen and swore I'd never come back although now I'm middle aged I appreciate the safety & space & quiet, along with the fact that I can be in Bristol city centre in less than half an hour. But given the option I'd prefer to live in Southville :)

TaupePanda · 10/04/2025 22:55

I don't know Nailsea but I would counsel her to be very careful about the flat she buys. Many people I know in newer builds blocks in Bristol have ended up paying ridiculous maintenance fees / sudden upkeep costs. It happens everywhere but it seems that it's very bad in Bristol.

If she is remotely handy she'll potentially find that a shabby house in bs3 (bedminster / ashton vale for example) might be possible. Both nice and on the edge of Southville which I would highly recommend to anyone

I know Nailsea well and it is a nice place to live. As others have said, safe and quiet with good transport links into Bristol and easy to get to lots of other places too. Whether it suits your daughter though I think depends on what her interests are; if she is into bars and clubbing, for example, we don't have that in Nailsea (unless you count the pubs) so she would need to travel into Bristol for that. If she is into community and groups and activities, there is a really good community in Nailsea with lots of events on and loads of things to do for people of all ages. If she is into the outdoors, we have lots of open space, walks etc. The town centre is ok, is a safe area and has a variety of shops to an extent but, to be honest, we are so close to Clevedon, Portishead, Weston and Bristol that it is easy to go elsewhere if you want to go shopping somewhere with more variety. There are lots of places to eat out too which is nice.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 27/04/2025 20:54

Thanks @Comfor
is Clevedon okay too?

Clevedon is nice- lovely to go to the water front and have a wander. Two main areas of shops- Hill Road area and the main town which isn’t quite as picturesque but more of the every day shops B and M etc . Lovely old Curzon cinema and has a good range of supermarkets- Tesco, small Asda, Lidl and Aldi. No train station and not as well connected to Bristol as Nailsea is with public transport and proximity.

RareGoalsVerge · 28/04/2025 22:14

Would she consider Shared Ownership? There are some lovely shared ownership flats at The Old Brewery development in Southville which would be a brilliant place for a 20-something year old.

I wouldn't live in Nailsea before the age of 55.

Otherwise, I'd look at something like this one : https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/159597011
The Sandy Park Road area is a little down-at-heel but is full of other young FTBs who would have preferred Southville but couldn't afford it, and has good bus links into the centre.

Check out this 2 bedroom flat for sale on Rightmove

2 bedroom flat for sale in Sandy Park Road, Brislington, Bristol, BS4 for £210,000. Marketed by Eveleighs, Keynsham

How about Bradley Stoke? Great regular transport into Bristol, a nature park on your doorstep and very close to the M4, M5 and Parkway station. Also not far to the bridges into Wales.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 01/05/2025 08:41

Thanks @Tryonemoretime
she’s actually just had an offer accepted on a two bed in Brislington right next to the nightingale nature reserve, so fingers crossed 🤞🏻

Ah that's great @Twoshoesnewshoes that's the area she wanted originally wasn't it? Nightingale Valley is such a lovely resource, I walk there all the time. Tell your daughter to check out Catley's, our fab new bakery that's just opened up near the entrance to St Anne's woods. (St Anne's woods is the other side of the railway bridge to Nightingale valley) Also St Anne's House has loads going on and and has a brilliant little cafe.

ginasevern · 01/05/2025 14:09

I agree with everything @Comfor says about Nailsea. It's pleasant and safe but if your daughter wants clubbing and cocktail bars, maybe not the best place. She could look at Filton or Horfield which are in north Bristol and easy to get into town.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 02/05/2025 09:55

Thanks @ediepop i will pass that on! Seems like a lovely community

Nailsea is honestly awful. Not for young people. The centre is dull and run down. The only reason would ever consider is if my DC were in dire need of a secondary school place!

St George - BS5
Fishponds
Old Market
St Pauls
Stapleton
Bedminster - BS3

Southville is extortionate

Edited

I would rather live in Nailsea than half of the places you've mentioned there. The countryside around there is beautiful and the shopping centre is dated but fine.

Fishponds and St George are rundown and the park is full of people smoking weed. St Paul's is crime-ridden and Staple Hill - no!

BS3 or BS4 Knowle I would recommend, I've lived in both.
Or get out of town to Nailsea, Clevedon, Long Ashton.

TillyTrifle · 14/08/2025 16:23

I see she’s now made another move but honestly she would have been mad to buy in Nailsea at her age and stage of life. Especially working a lot at home she could be so lonely and isolated. If she can’t afford a two bed alone she shouldn’t buy one as lodgers are very unreliable, especially somewhere like nailsea. Another young woman is highly unlikely to be looking to rent a room there - people move out there to buy, not to rent a flat share. I may be wrong but I’d be surprised if there is much call for someone of a similar demographic to her wanting to rent a room. And what happens if they leave and she can’t replace them? She has to be able to afford her mortgage alone wherever she lives and if she manages to rent a room that can be bonus money that makes life a little easier.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 16/08/2025 08:46

She will hopefully complete in a lovely two bed flat in Brislington in September.
her friend is moving in, but there’s no shortage of people looking for a room in Bristol.
she can’t afford a one bed in her own. She has savings to cover three months without a lodger but I can’t imagine she’ll be in that position.
